Human Resources University Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Language SEMESTER 1 CORE ENGLISH 1 NOUN CLAUSE Presented by: Mr. Veasna UY Academic Year: 2008-2009
What is noun clause? Definition: Noun clause is a dependent clause that functions as a noun. Note: Noun clause used as an object is preceded by an independent clause called an introductory clause .
What can noun clause be? Noun clause can be a subject, direct object, indirect object, predicate nominative (subjective complement), object of preposition or appositive.
a) That-clauses Note: The word “that” is often omitted if the meaning is clear without it. Formula: That + subject + verb (+ complement)
e.g. We don’t know that your wife has gone away from you . e.g. The reason is that he has lost his true love. e.g. That you hate me is incredible. e.g. That boy had a request, that we must help his mother and him.
b) Wh-word clauses Note: Wh-words are as follows: who, whom, whose, which, where, when, what, why, how much, how long, etc. Formula: Wh-word + subject + v (+complement)
e.g. I am not sure of who the best student is. e.g. Whom you hit last night is in front of your house now. e.g. The doctor treats whichever patient arrives first. e.g. I’ll give whoever answers the question correctly five marks.
Note: The statement order is used in noun clauses. Be careful with the use of question mark (?) e.g. I don’t know who the president of South Africa is. (Not: I don’t know who is the president of South Africa? )
Note: When the wh-word and the subject of the clause are the same word, the formula is: e.g. Can you tell me what caused the error? e.g. I can’t remember who kissed me last night. Wh-word + v (+complement)
c) If/whether-clauses Note: If/whether-clauses are dependent noun clauses that formed from Yes/No questions. Formula: If/whether + subject + v (+complement)
e.g. Are you a student? (Yes, I am/No, I’m not.)  I want to know whether you are a student. e.g. We wonder if the plane landed safely. e.g. Please, darling tell me whether or not you love me.
