Types of Noun

 Common noun  Concrete noun
 Singular noun  Plural noun
 Abstract noun  Material noun
Proper Noun
A proper noun is a specific (i.e., not
generic) name for a particular person,
place, or thing. Proper nouns are
always capitalized in English, no matter
where they fall in a sentence. Because
they endow nouns with a specific name,
they are also sometimes called proper
names.
Examples are:
• Margaret
• London
• United Nations
Common Noun
A common noun is a non-specific
person, place, or thing. Common nouns
are typically not capitalized, but there
are two exceptions to this rule.
Examples are:
• dog
• girl
• country
• car
• newspaper
• boat
• potato chip
• shoe
• house
• table
Collective Noun
A collective noun is a noun that refers
to some sort of group or collective—of
people, animals, things, etc. Collective
nouns are normally not treated as
plural, even though they refer to a
group of something.
Examples are:
• A herd of cows.
• A gang of robbers.
• A band of musicians.
• A kindle of kittens.
• A litter of puppies.
• A herd of cattle.
• A nest of rumours.
• A bed of clams.
Concrete Noun
A concrete noun is a noun that refers
to a physical thing, person, or place—
something or someone that can be
perceived with the five senses (touch,
hearing, sight, smell, and taste)
Examples are:
• candy
• tail
• giraffe
• sand
• woman
• belt
• zoo
• mango
Singular Noun
A singular noun is a noun that refers to
only one person, place, thing, or idea.
Examples are:
• pen
• slate
• chalk
• bottle
• tub
• soap
• window
• phone
• cycle
• pigeon
• chair
Plural Noun
A plural noun is a noun that refers to
more than one person, place, thing, or
idea. Most singular nouns are made
plural by adding a suffix, usually –s or –
es.
Examples are:
• Man – men.
• Woman – women.
• Ox – oxen.
• Goose – geese.
• Child – children.
• Tooth – teeth.
• Foot – feet.
• Mouse – mice.
Abstract Noun
An abstract noun is a noun that refers
to something non-physical—something
conceptual that you can't perceive
directly with your senses.
Examples are:
• sadness
• analysis
• government
• adulthood
• liberty
• anger
• freedom
• love
• generosity
• charity
• democracy
Material Noun
A material noun is a type of noun that
refers to physical matter. It can be
either countable or uncountable.
Examples are:
• Gold
• Silver
• Coal
• Rock
• Water
• Sunlight
• Leather
• Wood
• Sand
• Air
Concrete Noun
A concrete noun is a noun that refers
to a physical thing, person, or place—
something or someone that can be
perceived with the five senses (touch,
hearing, sight, smell, and taste)
Examples are:
• candy
• tail
• giraffe
• sand
• woman
• belt
• zoo
• mango
