Reading: Source Integration
When you begin drafting your paper, you will be using information from your sources as evidence to support your points. However, there are multiple ways to integrate that information into your writing, and some of those methods are more appropriate than others in particular circumstances. In what follows, we'll discuss methods of source integration including quotation and summary.
Guidelines for Quotations
When you quote a source, you use the exact words and phrases your source used to convey information. Plagiarism* occurs when quotes are not attributed to the appropriate sources, so it is important that you keep careful notes so that you don't unintentionally represent someone else's work or ideas as your own. Overquotating can also be problematic. This happens when writers rely too heavily on quotations. Over quoting can result in stilted writing where the author contributes too little. Ultimately, you will want to balance quotations with summaries.

2: Never quote anything you don't fully understand.

Example: "The mechanization of Charlie's body . . . is vividly dramatized in the film by his continuing to use his wrenches on objects other than those he is supposed to."
4: Provide context for your quotes. Don't assume the reader will know when and why your source said what they did. In the text surrounding the quote, provide information about the context in which the original quote took place as well as information about how you take the quote to support your point or project.
5: Always quote directly from what the source said. To make changes within a quote so that the quote fits grammatically with the rest of the sentence, place brackets ([ ]) around the altered material. Example: The witness testified "[the defendant] was engaged in the hit-and-run accident."
6: Mix quoted material with your own writing. Never present an entire quoted sentence without any introductory qualifying, or contextualizing information. Example: According to the anthropologist Brian Hoey, the purpose of ethnographies is "to provide a detailed, in-depth description of everyday life and practice."

Finding, Evaluating, and Utilizing Credible Information
This course requires a higher level of research than you may have undertaken in the past. You must find sources that are reliable, related to your paper’s topic, and contain evidence to support your claims and arguments. Take thorough notes while you find these sources, and be careful to avoid plagiarism by appropriately quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing your sources.
Using the University Library
In previous courses, you used the Internet to research information about different topics. In this course, you may still use the Internet sparingly, but the University Library provides a wider variety of resources that are more appropriate for formal research papers.
The University Library includes the following resources:
· Databases. These databases contain magazine articles, journal articles, newspaper articles, audio clips, and other types of multimedia, statistics, articles with opposing viewpoints, and much more. You can search through the databases by specialization, subject, author, title, publication, and so forth.
· Research resources. Besides the databases, the library also contains access to books, dissertations, theses, research in Spanish, Canadian information, country profiles and economic data, encyclopedias and dictionaries, and journal indexes and abstracts.
· Writing and test-taking resources. The library also provides guides for preparing for and taking different kinds of tests, improving writing and grammar, and so on.
· Help. The library contains links to a Frequently Asked Questions page, timely feedback from a librarian, a research tutorial, and a library handbook.
As you search for sources, you may receive thousands of results for a topic in the University Library. If that happens, you may have to narrow your topic, or you may need to enter more specific information in the search engine. The library tutorial at http://www.apollolibrary.com/Library/tutorial.aspx provides information for using Boolean search commands to expand, limit, or refine a search for information.
Finding and Evaluating Credible Information
A credible source is one that is trustworthy, providing true, accurate, and balanced information. Generally, periodicals, journals, and other sources found in the University Library are credible because they are written by professionals and must be approved to be published. Many of the library articles are peer reviewed—written by professionals and reviewed by other professionals in the same area of expertise to ensure the research is credible and trustworthy. On the other hand, websites may be written by anyone, so credibility is usually more difficult to determine.
In this course, you are required to find five to seven credible sources. To show your credibility as an effective researcher, you must select a variety of valid sources. Avoid using only websites or using only books.
The Research Paper and Citation Methodology

- 1. Notetaking Using Note Cards for Your Research Paper
- 2. Definition Note taking is an indispensable part of writing a research paper. Your notes record information from the sources that you will use in writing your paper. Therefore, it is necessary to critically evaluate the texts or articles you are reading and to make reasonable choices about what will and will not be useful for your paper. Otherwise, you will overload yourself with information and spend too much time sifting through notes.
- 3. Three steps Understand the information. Before you can use information, you must understand it. Taking notes is a good way to develop your knowledge and comprehension of a subject. Select the information: You must sort out the material you need from other information surrounding it in the text. Record the information: You must record it in such a way that it can be easily sorted, reorganized, and incorporated into your paper.

- 6. MAKING NOTE CARDS Your note cards will serve as the basis for your footnotes. This means that your note cards must include all the information needed for your footnotes. Every note card must include enough source information to “link” it with the correct source card. Every note card must clearly indicate whether the words cited are your own or the source’s. Every note card must include the page number (or a range of pages) where you found the information cited.
- 7. Making Cards for Quotes Material is recorded exactly as it is taken from the source Identify direct quotes with quotation marks. If your source is citing another scholar or a primary source, you should make this clear. Bracket your own words [ ] if you add them into a quote.
