The point of this book is to explain my view on music. I know everyonehas their
own take on what makes music “good” or “bad”. I also know my view is technical
and may appear to be somewhatsensational, however it makes perfect senseto
me.
I have heard the theory that the beet makes music bad or good. While I can see
some truth in that, it is still lacking in finality because I could take a rock song and
remove the beet and it is still bad music. Justas I could take a good song and add
a bad beet to it and still have a good musicalscore but a bad sound.
Of coursethe lyrics do makea differencetoo. Bad lyrics are bad regardless of the
tune you add them to. But I intend to find the rootof what makes the musical
score(not lyrics) good or bad.
To explore this subject, we will have to understand not only music but the
alphabet, numbers, and how those things relate to Bible.
Numbers
Numbers are important to God. The books of the bible startout this way Genesis
(beginnings), Exodus (separation), Leviticus (Law), and Numbers (accounting). So
all things in life will fit into the constraints of these criteria. Everything has a
beginning; then needs a separation to keep it distinct and unique; then some laws
have to be created to maintain its individuality; then there must be some kind of
accounting to enforcethe rules.
Fromthe Bible we will need to grasp the meaning of severalnumbers because
they will be clearly seen in music.
The Number One
The meaning of “one” in the Bible is unity, root, fixed, or absolute.
The first statement of the Bible is Gen 1:1 In the beginning God… God is the root
of all thing (Col 1:17). Thefirst commandmentEx 20:3 “Thou shalt haveno other
gods…” He is the root, He is fixed and absolute. Deut 6:4 declares Him “one
LORD”. Eph 4:4-6 makes seven statements that mirror each other, and one
statement in the middle that stands alone: one body (one God and Father … in
you all); OneSpirit (one baptism); One hope (one faith); and the statement that
stands alone without a mirror statement is “One Lord”.
The Number Three
The meaning of “three” in the Bible is Devine Unity, or God’s signature.
The Godhead Mat 28:19 …baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost. The theme song in heaven Isa 6:3 …Holy, holy, holy… In
Rev 1:8 the Almighty declares his existence in three statements “…which is, and
which was, and which is to come…” Jesus declares his existence in the Old
Testament as the Word. John 1:1 the Word is used three time in one verseto
describeJesus. The fruit of the spiritis listed in three groupings of three in
Eph5:22-23 (threeinward, threeoutward, and three God-ward).
The Number Four
The meaning of “four” in the Bible is earth, or earthy.
Isa 11:12; Ezek 7:2; Rev 20:8 tell us the earth has four corners. Rev 7:1 tells us the
earth not only has four corners but four winds.
The Number Five
The meaning of “five” in the Bible is death.
In the Old Testament we are repeatedly told the way to kill a man is to stab him
“under the fifth rib”. At the feeding of the Five thousand they found a boy with
five loaves. Jesus then compares himself (the bread of life) with manna, and tells
them “Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead”. Paul prays for
the death of an unruly Christian in 1Cor 5:5. The fifth seal in Revelation reveals
the souls of men who are dead (Rev 6:9). Itis God that broughtyou into this
world and it is God that will call you out; or either take you out.
The Number Seven
The meaning of “seven” in the Bible is completion or perfection.
God gaveman seven days to complete one week. Israelwas to count seven
months frompassover and then have the Feastof Tabernacles. The land was to
rest every seventh year. After seven series of seven years Israelhad Jubilee. God
gave Abrahama seven-pointblessing Gen 12:2-3. God’s covenantwith Israelwas
given in seven points Ex 6:6-7. On the Day of Atonement seven things wereto be
sprinkled with blood (Lev 9:17; 16:14; 16:18-19, Ex30:10). Seven Psalms credited
to David in the New Testament. Seven Churches are listed in Revelation. There are
seven “mysteries” revealed in the New Testament. Seven is the completion of
something.
The Number Eight
The meaning of “eight in the Bible is new beginning.
The eighth day of the week starts a new week. 1Pet 3:20; 2Pet 2:5 We see Noah
was the eighth person of eight souls saved to go into a new earth. Circumcision
was to be done on the eighth day, which was a picture of salvation thus making all
things new (Gen 17:12, Col2:11, 2Cor 5:17). Christrosefromthe dead on the first
day of the week, which is the eighth day. The feast of Tabernacles was to last
eight days a picture of the incarnation (John 1:14).
The Alphabet
Languageis an interesting thing; it is a surebet that Hebrew was a God inspired
(or at least ordained) language. He wrotethe commandments for Moses in
Hebrew. He wrotea warning to Belshazzar in Hebrew. The next language God
used was Greek the New Testament was produced in the Greek language. I
believe God choseEnglish next. The Bible that has blessed the world for the last
four hundred years has been English. As you will see God has used both our
language and numbering systemin His word to confirmHis word.
In Ex 12:18; 13:4 God told Israelthe day they left Egypt would be the beginning of
their year and the firstmonth called “Abib”. If you assign a number to each letter
of the alphabet (a=1, b=2, c=3, etc.) the math for this month (Abib) equals
fourteen. Exod 12:18 “In thefirst month, on the fourteenthday of the month at
even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the
month at even.”
The word “Balaam” is used fifty-seven times in the Bible. In Numbers chapter one
we are given a census for Israel, after Balaam’s corruption enters IsraelGod kills
off twenty-four thousand people (Num 25:9). In numbers chapter twenty-sixGod
commands another census to be taken. If you compare the two census you will
see Israelhas one thousand eight hundred twenty fewer people. The interesting
thing to note is Balaam is the cause of this and his name shows up fifty-seven
times in the Bible. If you comparethe individual tribes, you will see five tribes
(number of death) lose men, and seven tribes (completion or perfection) increase.
Eph 4:27 “Neither give place to the devil.” 49th book 4+9=13; 6 words= the 6th
word is Devil; now see the reference 4:27(4+2+7)=13; now theletter count- 26
letters = 2*13. God has truly engineered a Bible and language without
comparison.
Matthew 26:39 (notethe 13’s: 26 = 2 x 13 and 39 = 3 x 13). Paul calls this a curse
in Galatians 3:13.
If you take the twenty-seventh book of the OT and the twenty-seventh book of
the NT it is Isaiah and Revelation. In Isa 66:16 weseeGod destroying people with
fire and a sword; In Rev 16:16 wefind the same thing. Now it gets interesting if
you count the words in each passage. Isa 66:16 has 23 words(2+3=5 thenumber
of death). Rev 16:16 has 14 words (1+4=5 thenumber of death).
We could go on and on with this “coincidence” found in the Bible, but the point I
am making is God uses our English language and our numbering system. The
importance of this in music will become apparent as we will see music uses both
the alphabet and numbers.
Music basics
There are seven wholenotes, or twelve half notes (called semi tones). We know
seven is completion so we can see God’s hand in music. On the piano these seven
whole notes are the white keys (1John 1:5). The semi tones are the black keys.
The middle of the piano is “C”. Starting at the bass A0 to C8 there area total of
eighty eight keys (justover seven octaves). You would think the normal thing to
do would be put “A” in the middle, but “C” is the center note. You do not have to
read the Bible through many times to know a word that starts with “C” that was
the focus of the Old Testament and New; Christ, meaning the anointed one or
Messiah.
Eph 1:19-21 And whatis the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward
who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20
Which he
wroughtin Christ, when he raised him fromthe dead, and set him at his
own right hand in the heavenly places, 21
Far above all principality, and
power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only
in this world, but also in that which is to come:
1Pet 3:3-4 Whoseadorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting
the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4
But let it be
the hiddenman of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the
ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great
price.
In Eph 1:19-21 wearetold there is one name aboveall other names, on earth and
in eternity and that name is Christ. Then in 1Pet3:3-4 Peter tells the women to
not be known for their outward adorning but by the hidden man of the heart
which he calls an ornament. So let’s test this, he says the hidden man is an
ornament so what is hidden in the word or-name-nt. Christshould be the center
of man justas we see the “C” note on a piano.
The “one” note is the Root or key signature. Let’s let the numbers tell us the
story. Oneis God; the root note is any note you pick on the piano. Just like people
any person on earth regardless of race or global position is accountable to one,
God (Heb 4:3).
To find the Major chord for the rootnote (or key signature) you need what is
called a “Perfect fifth”. ThePerfect5th
is seven semi tones from the root. From
“C” the Perfect 5th
is “G”. Let’s let the numbers tell us the story. Fiveis death.
Seven is completion. Until you have been placed into Jesus’ death burialand
resurrection you have are not complete and you know something is missing.
The number fifth has to do with the number of intervals on the musicalstaff.
(CHIDESTER)
Chords
Major Chord=any note plus the 4th
semitone, plus the 7th
semitone. A Chord is
three or more notes; so far we have the Root and the Fifth, now we need the
middle note called a Major Third. (John 12:24)
Most songs melodies start on the third whole note.
Primary Chords (Major cords) areidentified by Roman numerals- I, IV, V [one,
four, and five].
We have seen numbers talk beforeso let’s see whatthese numbers say. “One” is
God, “Four” is earth and “Five” is death. Do you see the story? God came to earth
to die. Until you understand that all you can have is earthly music (I’llexplain this
more in detail later). The Bible tells us nine times God gives his people a “new
song” (Ps 33:3; Ps 40:3; Ps 96:1; Ps 98:1; Ps 144:9; Ps 149:1; Isa 42:10; Rev 5:9;
Rev 14:3).
Now the music theory terminology gets a little technical, I’lltry to put it in
layman’s terms.
Songs are written in key signatures meaning the tonal rangeof available notes.
This rangeof notes is the “scale”. There are two kinds of scales, the technical
terms for these are “Diatonic” (meaning in the key), and “Chromatic” (meaning
outside the key, or literally color). For example in the key of “C” there are no
sharps or flats; if you are playing a song in the key of “C” and have a note that is a
sharp or flat that note is “Chromatic”.
Because there are seven notes in the scale each note can be made into a chord. In
music theory each note is represented by either a capital or lower caseRoman
numeral. (tonic= tone on which the song is based)
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
I ii iii IV V vi vii dim7
Tonic supertonic mediant Subdominant Dominant submediant leading tone
Major minor minor Major Major minor diminished
Key
Signature
This systembecomes helpful because we are now referring to the interval
between notes to form a chord; instead of using a proper name for the chord (G,
C, D7). Onceyou learn the intervals for each number you can usethem in any
Key.
Minor Chord=any note plus the third semitone, plus the seventh semitone. This
produces a troubled sad tone. The Third is flat (Eph 4:30 the third member of the
Trinity)
