Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 1
This paper is the result of my personal study of the “Almighty” in Scripture and the writings of
Sister White. Comments, suggestions, and criticism are welcome to my email
thebooksearcher@gmail.com or through Facebook.
The question of whether the name and attribute “Almighty” applies only to the Father or
whether it applies to both the Father and the Son is a controversial topic these days. Our only
safety in questions like these is to rely upon inspiration. First, we’re going to look at evidence in
the book of Revelation.
The first time the Almighty is mentioned in Revelation is verse eight of chapter one:
“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and
which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Rev. 1:8
At first glance it seems like this verse is speaking of the Father because in verse five the
Father is referred to as “Him which is, and which was, and which is the come” but let’s look a
little deeper. Who is the Alpha and Omega? The subsequent verses give us the answer.
“I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a
trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest,
write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus,
and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto
Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And
being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven
candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and
girt about the paps with a golden girdle...I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold,
I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Rev. 1:10-13,18
John hears a great voice saying, I am Alpha and Omega, and turning to see who was
speaking, sees Christ standing in the Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary as our high priest
(Heb. 2:17; 6:19,20). If Christ is Alpha and Omega in verse 11 He must also be Alpha and
Omega in verse 8, where He is also referenced as the Almighty.
Let’s look at the next verse mentioning “the Almighty.”
“And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes
within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty,
which was, and is, and is to come.” Rev. 4:8
In this verse the Almighty must refer to the Father for we do not see the Son in the scene of
Revelation 4. The Father is there as well as the Spirit. The angels, the elders and the four living
creatures are present but Christ is not seen. This is because He was on the earth as our
Saviour in this scene. In Revelation 5, which is the continuation of chapter 4, Christ appears as
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 2
the “Lamb who was slain” who also is “the Lion of the tribe of Judah,” the only One who can
open the book. So we must conclude that it is the Father who is called the Almighty in chapter 4.
Revelation 11:17 may also be referencing the Father.
The next place we find “the Almighty” is Revelation 15:
“And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,
Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou
King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art
holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made
manifest.” Rev. 15:3,4
It seems obvious that if this is the “song of the Lamb” the Lord God Almighty must be Christ.
If it refers to the Father the singers would have failed to sing about Christ in His own song. That
isn’t plausible. Rev. 17:14 and 19:16 make it clear that the Lamb is KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS. Every knee will bow at the name of Christ (Phl. 2:10) and worship Him, while
the 144,000 sing the song Moses and the Lamb, “Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God
Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and
glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for
thy judgments are made manifest.” (Rev. 15:3,4).
Let’s skip the two verses mentioning the Almighty in Rev. 16 and discuss them in connection
with Rev. 19:15:
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations:
and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness
and wrath of Almighty God. Rev. 19:15
This verse is obviously referring to Christ for He it is that has a sharp sword going out of His
mouth (Rev. 1:16) and He it is who will rule the nations with a rod of iron (Rev. 2:27, 12:5) but is
this wrath of Almighty God His own wrath or the wrath of His Father? The wrath of God is
revealed in the pouring out of the plagues in Revelation 16. In verse 7 it says “And I heard
another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments,”
which is very similar to the language found in the song of Moses and the Lamb. These
judgments are the wrath of God manifested. Verse 14 talks of the spirits of demons gathering
the kings of the earth and the whole world to the “great day of God Almighty.” Whose wrath is
revealed on that great day of God Almighty?
“And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him
that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath
is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Rev. 6:16,17
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 3
It is the great day of the Lamb’s wrath. So the “fierceness and wrath of God Almighty” in Rev.
19:15 must be the Lamb’s wrath, the wrath of the Son of God. The Bible is unequivocal here.
Almighty God is Christ. It is His own wrath here revealed to the world, not the wrath of His
Father.
There is one more reference to Almighty God in the book of Revelation:
“And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of
it.” Rev. 21:22
Here God Almighty must be God the Father because the Lamb is mentioned separately. As
we’ve studied, the name “Almighty God” is used both for the Father and the Son. They are both
God Almighty.
Let’s look at the testimony of Ellen White. Dozens of times she calls Christ the Alpha and the
Omega:
“There should be connected with our school, those who are strong-minded and
whole- souled Christians, who receive and believe in Christ as the Alpha and
Omega....”--The Advocate, May 1, 1899, par. 1
“Christ says, ‘Behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with Me, to give every man
according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the
first and the last. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right
to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.’”--Australasian Union
Conference Record, Sept. 15, 1902, par. 2
“Let Christ be presented as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, of the
great plan of redemption. Present to the people such subjects as will strengthen their
confidence in God and in his word, and lead them to investigate its teachings for
themselves. And as they go forward, step by step, in the study of the Bible, they will be
better prepared to appreciate the beauty and harmony of its precious truths.”--Review &
Herald, Nov. 25, 1890, par. 5
“Christ must be our all and in all, the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the
beginning and the end.”--Review & Herald, May 3, 1892, par. 2
“What a Saviour we have! It was he that revealed himself to John on the Isle of
Patmos, and proclaimed, ‘I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith
the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.’ None but just
such an ever-living, mighty God, could pay the ransom to save sinners from going down
into the pit of death.”--Review & Herald, Feb. 18, 1896, par. 5
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 4
“We trace Christ all through the Old Testament and the New. ‘And, behold, I come
quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I
am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they
that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in
through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers,
and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent
mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the
offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say,
Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And
whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.’
Here we have the Alpha of Genesis and the Omega of Revelation. The blessing is
promised to all those who keep the commandments of God, and who co-operate with
him in the proclamation of the third angel’s message. “I Jesus have sent mine angel to
testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David,
and the bright and morning star.” That which Christ has spoken in the Old Testament is
for all the world. What he has said in reference to his commandments is not yea and
nay, but yea and amen.”--Review & Herald, June 8, 1897, par. 9,10
“Christ is nothing to us unless he is our Guide, our Counselor, our Alpha and Omega,
our all and in all. If Christ abides with us, self must be dead, for our very spiritual life is to
have self hid with Christ in God.”--The Sabbath-School Worker, July 1, 1894, par. 3
Ellen White on the Old Testament references to Almighty God
Abraham
“After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear
not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” Gen 15:1
‘In a vision of the night the divine Voice was again heard. “Fear not, Abram,” were the
words of the Prince of princes; “I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” But his
mind was so oppressed by forebodings that he could not now grasp the promise with
unquestioning confidence as heretofore. He prayed for some tangible evidence that it
would be fulfilled. And how was the covenant promise to be realized, while the gift of a
son was withheld? “What wilt Thou give me,” he said, “seeing I go childless?” “And, lo,
one born in my house is mine heir.” He proposed to make his trusty servant Eliezer his
son by adoption, and the inheritor of his possessions. But he was assured that a child of
his own was to be his heir. Then he was led outside his tent, and told to look up to the
unnumbered stars glittering in the heavens; and as he did so, the words were spoken,
“So shall thy seed be.” “Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for
righteousness.” Romans 4:3.’--Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 136, par. 3
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 5
“But Jesus understands the subtle arts of the enemy, and He can keep our feet in safe
paths. He said on one occasion to His servant, ‘Fear not, Abraham; I am thy shield.’
[Genesis 15:1.] He will say the same to you if you will place yourself under His
protection.”--Letter 204-1907
Ellen White here says that the LORD who talked to Abraham in Gen. 15 about His childless
situation was the Prince of princes, the Son of God, Jesus Christ (Rev. 1:5).
Again the LORD appears to Abraham, promising that He would be the father of many nations:
And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and
said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. Gen. 17:1
This time the LORD says, “I am the Almighty God.” If it was the Son of God talking to
Abraham about His childless condition in chapter 15, it only makes sense that the same One
with the same name would talk to Him about the same subject in chapter 17.
In chapter 18 the LORD again appears to Abraham:
And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door
in the heat of the day; Gen. 18:1
About this chapter Ellen White says:
“It was Christ who spoke with Abraham under the oaks at Mamre.”--Desire of Ages, p.
290
“Three angels disguised as men appeared to Abraham as he sat in the door of his
tent. They were strangers to Abraham, but he treated them courteously, and supplied all
their necessities as human beings, knowing not that one of those whom he entertained
was no less than the Son of God.”--Manuscript 7-1897.6
“Two of the heavenly messengers departed, leaving Abraham alone with Him whom
he now knew to be the Son of God.”--Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 139
If ‘the LORD’ in chapters 15 and 18 was Christ, the Son of God, the LORD in chapter 17
must have been the Son of God as well. There can’t be multiple LORDS talking to Abraham.
And if it was Christ speaking in chapter 17:1 He must be the Almighty God who appeared to
Abraham so many times.
And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God
Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. Ex. 6:3
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 6
Moses
JEHOVAH in the previous verse is the same name that is translated LORD in almost every
other instance. The same LORD who appeared to Abraham under the name God Almighty here
speaks with Moses. As we’ve read from Sister White, this is none other than the Son of God. A
few chapters previous in chapter 3 the LORD appears to Moses in the burning bush (verses 2,4)
as the I AM. This was Jesus Christ as well. We can be sure that this was Jesus Christ because
of Jesus’s own words in John 8:58,59:
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM. Then
took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple,
going through the midst of them, and so passed by.--John 8:58-59
Jesus takes the name and title I AM. The Jews knew exactly what He was saying. They
knew He was claiming to be the I AM who talked with Moses from the burning bush. Ellen White
confirms this in the following statements:
‘Gideon desired some token that the one now addressing him was the same that
spoke to Moses in the burning bush. The angel had veiled the divine glory of his
presence, but it was no other than Christ, the Son of God. When a prophet or an angel
delivered a divine message, his words were, “The Lord saith, I will do this,” but it is
stated of the Person who talked with Gideon, “The Lord said unto him, I will be with
thee.”’--Signs of the Times, June 23, 1881, Art. A, par. 16
“The humanity of the Son of God is everything to us. It is the golden chain that binds
our souls to Christ, and through Christ to God. This is to be our study. Christ was a real
man; he gave proof of his humility in becoming a man. Yet he was God in the flesh.
When we approach this subject, we would do well to heed the words spoken by Christ to
Moses at the burning bush, “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon
thou standest is holy ground.” We should come to this study with the humility of a
learner, with a contrite heart. And the study of the incarnation of Christ is a fruitful field,
which will repay the searcher who digs deep for hidden truth.”--The Youth Instructor, Oct.
13, 1898, par. 6
“The cloud that guided Israel stood over the tabernacle. The glory of the cloud
emanated from Jesus Christ, who from the midst of the glory talked with Moses as He
had talked with him from the burning bush.”--Manuscript 126-1901.6
“Christ, the Light of the world, was revealed to Moses in the burning bush, and Moses
was appointed to make known the superiority of Jehovah over every false
deity.”--Manuscript 20-1895.2

“When we approach the subject of Christ’s divinity clothed with the garb of humanity,
we may appropriately heed the words spoken by Christ to Moses at the burning bush,
“Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.”
[Exodus 3:5.] We must come to the study of this subject with the humility of a learner,
with a contrite heart. The study of the incarnation of Christ is a fruitful field and will repay

“I am the light of the world,” Christ declared. [John 8:12.] When Moses saw the
burning bush in Mount Horeb, and turned aside to see why the bush was not consumed,
Christ revealed Himself to Moses and told him what he must do to deliver the children of
Israel from Egypt.--Letter 38-1907.15
Other Ellen White statements
“‘This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.’ [Matthew 3:17.] These words
were loud and most powerful, not resembling any human sound. This heavenly
demonstration was given that the whole surrounding multitude might take in the exalted,
holy mission of the promised One, and the work to be accomplished through Him—the
Prince of Life—as the promised Messiah, the almighty, powerful Saviour, the
long-looked-for Redeemer, the Deliverer of Israel and the Saviour of the world.”

“I want to tell you, my dear friends, we have a living Saviour; we have an almighty
power in Jesus Christ, and He will work out our salvation with us, and we may stand on
vantage ground, if we will.” --Manuscript 115-1909.60
“It is fellowship with Christ, personal contact with a living Saviour, that enables the
mind and heart and soul to triumph over the lower nature. Tell the wanderer of an
almighty hand that will hold him up, of an infinite humanity in Christ that pities
him.”--Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 388
“The voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping saints, clothed with glorious
immortality. The living saints were changed in a moment, and were caught up with them
into the cloudy chariot. It looked all over glorious as it rolled upward. On either side of the
chariot were wings, and beneath it wheels. And as the chariot rolled upward, the wheels
cried, ‘Holy,’ and the wings, as they moved, cried, ‘Holy,’ and the retinue of holy angels
around the cloud cried, ‘Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.’ And the saints in the cloud
cried, ‘Glory! Alleluia!’ And the chariot rolled upward to the holy city. Jesus threw open
the gates of the golden city, and led us in. Here we were made welcome, for we had kept

‘the commandments of God,’ and had a ‘right to the tree of life.’ Revelation 14:12;
22:14.”--Christian Experience and Teachings, p. 96, par. 3
‘Soon appeared the great white cloud. It looked more lovely than ever before. On it sat
the Son of man. At first we did not see Jesus on the cloud, but as it drew near the earth
we could behold His lovely person. This cloud, when it first appeared, was the sign of the
Son of man in heaven. The voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping saints,
clothed with glorious immortality. The living saints were changed in a moment and were
caught up with them into the cloudy chariot. It looked all over glorious as it rolled upward.
On either side of the chariot were wings, and beneath it wheels. And as the chariot rolled
upward, the wheels cried, “Holy,” and the wings, as they moved, cried, “Holy,” and the
retinue of holy angels around the cloud cried, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!” And
the saints in the cloud cried, “Glory! Alleluia!” And the chariot rolled upward to the Holy
City. Jesus threw open the gates of the golden city and led us in. Here we were made
welcome, for we had kept the “commandments of God,” and had a “right to the tree of
life.”’--Early Writings, 35, par. 1
“The earth mightily shook as the voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping
saints. They responded to the call and came forth clothed with glorious immortality,
crying, “Victory, victory, over death and the grave! O death, where is thy sting? O grave,
where is thy victory?” Then the living saints and the risen ones raised their voices in a
long, transporting shout of victory. Those bodies that had gone down into the grave
bearing the marks of disease and death came up in immortal health and vigor. The living
saints are changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and caught up with the risen
ones, and together they meet their Lord in the air. Oh, what a glorious meeting! Friends
whom death had separated were united, never more to part.
On each side of the cloudy chariot were wings, and beneath it were living wheels;
and as the chariot rolled upward, the wheels cried, “Holy,” and the wings, as they moved,
cried, “Holy,” and the retinue of holy angels around the cloud cried, “Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty!” And the saints in the cloud cried, “Glory! Alleluia!” And the chariot
rolled upward to the Holy City. Before entering the city, the saints were arranged in a
perfect square, with Jesus in the midst. He stood head and shoulders above the saints
and above the angels. His majestic form and lovely countenance could be seen by all in
the square.”--Early Writings, p. 287, par. 1,2
“On each side of the cloudy chariot are wings, and beneath it are living wheels; and as
the chariot rolls upward, the wheels cry, “Holy,” and the wings, as they move, cry, “Holy,”
and the retinue of angels cry, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.” And the redeemed
shout, “Alleluia!” as the chariot moves onward toward the New Jerusalem. Before
entering the City of God, the Saviour bestows upon His followers the emblems of victory
and invests them with the insignia of their royal state.”--The Great Controversy, p. 645

“When Jesus was awakened to meet the storm, He was in perfect peace. There was
no trace of fear in word or look, for no fear was in His heart. But He rested not in the
possession of almighty power. It was not as the “Master of earth and sea and sky” that
He reposed in quiet. That power He had laid down, and He says, “I can of Mine own self
do nothing.” John 5:30. He trusted in the Father’s might. It was in faith—faith in God’s
love and care—that Jesus rested, and the power of that word which stilled the storm was
the power of God.”--The Desire of Ages, p. 336, par. 1
“Turning to the priests and elders, Christ fixed upon them His searching glance. The
words He spoke they would never forget as long as life should last. They were as the
sharp arrows of the Almighty. With dignity He said: You come out against Me with
swords and staves as you would against a thief or a robber. Day by day I sat teaching in
the temple. You had every opportunity of laying hands upon Me, and you did nothing.
The night is better suited to your work. ‘This is your hour, and the power of darkness.’”
--The Desire of Ages, p. 697.1
“The heavens glow with the dawning of eternal day, and like the melody of angel
songs the words fall upon the ear: ‘Stand fast to your allegiance. Help is coming.’ Christ,
the almighty Victor, holds out to His weary soldiers a crown of immortal glory; and His
voice comes from the gates ajar: ‘Lo, I am with you. Be not afraid. I am acquainted with
all your sorrows; I have borne your griefs. You are not warring against untried enemies. I
have fought the battle in your behalf, and in My name you are more than conquerors.’”
{GC 632.3}
“As if entranced, the wicked have looked upon the coronation of the Son of God.
They see in His hands the tables of the divine law, the statutes which they have
despised and transgressed. They witness the outburst of wonder, rapture, and adoration
from the saved; and as the wave of melody sweeps over the multitudes without the city,
all with one voice exclaim, ‘Great and marvelous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just
and true are Thy ways, Thou King of saints’ (Revelation 15:3); and, falling prostrate, they
worship the Prince of life.
Satan seems paralyzed as he beholds the glory and majesty of Christ. He who was once
a covering cherub remembers whence he has fallen. A shining seraph, “son of the
morning;” how changed, how degraded! From the council where once he was honored,
he is forever excluded. He sees another now standing near to the Father, veiling His
glory. He has seen the crown placed upon the head of Christ by an angel of lofty stature
and majestic presence, and he knows that the exalted position of this angel might have
been his. --The Great Controversy, 668,669
“What a Saviour we have! It was he that revealed himself to John on the Isle of

such an ever-living, mighty God, could pay the ransom to save sinners from going down
into the pit of death.” --Review & Herald, Feb. 18, 1896, par. 5
“Nothing but Christ’s loving compassion, his divine grace, his almighty power, can
enable us to baffle the relentless foe, and subdue the opposition of our own hearts. What
is our strength?—The joy of the Lord. Let the love of Christ fill our hearts, and then we
shall be prepared to receive the power that he has for us.” --Review & Herald, Mar. 31,
1904, par. 2
“I am instructed to say to students, In your search for knowledge, climb higher than
the standard set by the world; follow where Jesus has led the way. And to teachers I
would say, Beware how you sow the seeds of unbelief in human hearts and minds.
Cleanse yourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. The crowning glory of
Christ’s attributes was his holiness. The angels bow before him in adoration exclaiming,
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty. He is declared to be glorious in his holiness. Study
the character of God. By beholding Christ, by seeking him in faith and prayer, you may
become like him.” --Review & Herald, Mar. 12, 1908, par. 4
‘Let every breath of praise, every word of exaltation, flow to him who is worthy, flow to
Jesus, the Prince of life, the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. Elevate
the cross of Christ. Elevate the Mediator. Lift up Jesus. In him is everything noble.
Contemplate God in Christ. He is surrounded with angels, cherubim and seraphim
continually behold him. Angelic voices day and night cry before him: “Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.... Thou art worthy, O Lord, to
receive glory and honor and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure
they are and were created.” “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and
riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.” “Great and
marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of
saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy; for
all nations shall come and worship before thee.” But although God only is holy and
worthy to be praised, human tongues are perverted to praise and glorify man rather than
God.’ --Signs of the Times, Dec. 30, 1889, par. 5
‘The incarnate I AM is our abiding Sacrifice. The I AM is our Redeemer, our
Substitute, our Surety. He is the Daysman between God and the human soul, our
Advocate in the courts of heaven, our unwearying Intercessor, pleading in our behalf His
merits and His atoning sacrifice. The I AM is our Saviour. In Him our hopes of eternal life
are centered. He is an ever-present help in time of trouble. In Him is the assurance of
every promise. We must acknowledge and receive this almighty Saviour; we must
behold Him, that we may be like Him in character. “As many as received Him, to them
gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.”’

“The Lord created man out of the dust of the earth. He made Adam a partaker of His
life, His nature. There was breathed into him the breath of the Almighty, and he became
a living soul. Adam was perfect in form—strong, comely, pure, bearing the image of his
Maker. God gave him a companion, a wife, to share with him the beauties of nature. In
order for this holy pair to continue to be happy, God gave them something to do. The
fact that they were holy did not debar them from working. God is never idle. To every
one of the angelic host is given an appointed task. --10 Manuscript Releases, p. 326.4
‘In our warfare we have Christ’s promise, “He that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father,
and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him” He manifested Himself to John, who
had been banished by his persecutors to the lonely isle of Patmos. But there He who
rules the earth and keeps the waters in their appointed channel, manifested Himself to
John. “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the
kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word
of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and
heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first
and the last” [Revelation 1:9-11]: “the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is,

‘Angels have been sent as messengers of mercy to the distressed, to the suffering.
These angels from the world of light, from the infinite glory of God before the throne, are
on missions of love, of care, of mercy for the suffering ones of humanity. But there is a
picture of greater condescension than this: the Lord, the Son of the Infinite Father, He
who styles Himself as the Faithful Witness, the First-begotten of the dead, the Prince of
the kings of the earth, Him that loved us, Him that washed us from our sins in His own
blood. He says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, ... which is, and
which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” [Revelation 1:8.]’ --Manuscript

“What a Saviour we have! It was He that revealed Himself to John on the Isle of
Patmos, and proclaimed, ‘I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith
the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.’ [Revelation 1:8.]
None but just such an ever living, mighty God, could pay the ransom to save sinners

“I want to tell you, my dear friends, we have a living Saviour; we have an almighty
power in Jesus Christ, and He will work out our salvation with us, and we may stand on
vantage ground, if we will. But there are to be missionaries in such a congregation as
this that will give themselves to the work of bringing the truth before the people. We are
not to sit in our homes enjoying what has cost Christ so much. No, no; humanity must
grasp divinity, and then push the battle to the gates. Push the battle at every step for
souls to join the ranks on the Lord’s side.” --Manuscript 115-1909.60

“This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” [Matthew 3:17.] These words
were loud and most powerful, not resembling any human sound. This heavenly
demonstration was given that the whole surrounding multitude might take in the exalted,
holy mission of the promised One, and the work to be accomplished through Him—the
Prince of Life—as the promised Messiah, the almighty, powerful Saviour, the
long-looked-for Redeemer, the Deliverer of Israel and the Saviour of the world.

‘His people would never know defeat if they would abide under the shadow of the
Almighty, for one mightier than angels would fight by their side in every battle.
It was this unseen General of armies who revealed Himself to Joshua. He appeared to
Joshua as a man [representing] the Lord God of the host of Israel, for had He appeared
in His glory the armies of Israel would have been destroyed. After the death of Moses,
the reins of government were placed in the hands of Joshua. As the servant of the Lord,
he was given a special work to do. His office carried with it great honor and
responsibility, and the instruction given to Moses was transferred to him in a marked
manner. “Now therefore,” the Lord said, “arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this
people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place
that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said to
Moses.” [Joshua 1:2, 3.]’--Manuscript 134-1899.13-14
What about Ellen White’s statement that says “the man Christ Jesus
was not the Lord God Almighty”?
A careful search of Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy has revealed that Christ, the Son of
God, is indeed called the Almighty in many instances. But there is a statement from sister White
that seems to contradict her other statements. Let’s look at it:
‘There is no one who can explain the mystery of the incarnation of Christ. Yet we
know that He came to this earth and lived as a man among men. The man Christ Jesus
was not the Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Father are one. The Deity did not sink
under the agonizing torture of Calvary, yet it is none the less true that "God so loved the
world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life."’ John 3:16. 18 - 18LtMs, Ms 140, 1903, par. 28
This would seem to be a conclusive statement if we hadn’t already read dozens of
statements saying the opposite--that Christ is indeed the Almighty--but we know that “one
saying of the Saviour must not be made to destroy another” so there must be a way to reconcile
these two ideas together.
If we read the preceding paragraph to this one we may get a clue to what it is talking about:
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 13
“Christ left His position in the heavenly courts and came to this earth to live the life of
human beings. This sacrifice He made in order to show that Satan's charge against God
is false—that it is possible for man to obey the laws of God's kingdom. Equal with the
Father, honored and adored by the angels, in our behalf Christ humbled Himself and
came to this earth to live a life of lowliness and poverty—to be a man of sorrows and
acquainted with grief. Yet the stamp of divinity was upon His humanity. He came as a
divine Teacher, to uplift human beings, to increase their physical, mental, and spiritual
efficiency.” --18LtMs, Ms 140, 1903, par. 27
Christ left behind His heavenly position as equal to the Father to humble Himself as man on
this earth. As a man Christ was no longer the Lord God Almighty. He had laid aside His position
to save us from our sins.
What did laying aside His position entail?
“When Jesus was awakened to meet the storm, He was in perfect peace. There was
no trace of fear in word or look, for no fear was in His heart. But He rested not in the
possession of almighty power. It was not as the “Master of earth and sea and sky” that
He reposed in quiet. That power He had laid down, and He says, “I can of Mine own self
do nothing.” John 5:30. He trusted in the Father’s might. It was in faith—faith in God’s
love and care—that Jesus rested, and the power of that word which stilled the storm was
the power of God.” --The Desire of Ages, 336.1
“Jesus, the Majesty of heaven, the royal King of heaven, laid aside his royalty, left his
throne of glory, his high command, and came into our world to bring to fallen man,
weakened in moral power, and corrupted by sin, aid divine. He clothed his divinity with
humanity, that he might reach to the very depths of human woe and misery, to lift up
fallen man. By taking upon himself man's nature, he raised humanity in the scale of
moral value with God. These great themes are almost too high, too deep, too infinite, for
the comprehension of finite minds.” Review & Herald, Dec. 9, 1884, par. 3.
“Jesus left all his glory, and became poor, that we through his poverty might be made
rich. But how few of his professed followers appreciate his great sacrifice!”--Review &
Herald, Mar. 15, 1887, par. 16.
“Christ gave himself a living sacrifice. He emptied himself of his high prerogatives, left
his mansions of glory, his throne and high command, and became poor, that we through
his poverty might be made rich.”--Signs of the Times, April 22, 1897, par. 1.
“He had a full consciousness of His divinity; but He had laid aside His royal crown
and kingly robes, and had taken the form of a servant. One of the last acts of His life on
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 14
earth was to gird Himself as a servant, and perform a servant's part.”--Counsels for the
Church, 299.
“He who left the royal courts, who laid aside His honor as Commander of the
heavenly hosts, who clothed His divinity with humanity in order to uplift the fallen race;
He who for our sake became poor that we through His poverty might be rich, has spoken
to men, and in His wisdom has told them His own plan for sustaining those who bear His
message to the world.—The Review and Herald, February 4, 1902.
“Satan exulted when Jesus laid aside His power and glory and left heaven. He
thought that the Son of God was then placed in his power.” Early Writings, 157.
“Our Lord and Saviour laid aside His dominion, His riches and glory, and sought after
us, that He might save us from misery and make us like Himself. He humbled Himself
and took our nature that we might be able to learn of Him and, imitating His life of
benevolence and self-denial, follow Him step by step to heaven.” 2 Testimonies, 169.
At the time when He was most needed, Jesus, the Son of God, the world's
Redeemer, laid aside His divinity, and came to earth in the garb of humanity.” Bible Echo
Oct. 12, 1896, par. 1.
When the Son of God laid aside His position on the throne of the universe, it meant leaving
His throne, His mansions, His royal crown and kingly robes, even all of His glory. It meant laying
aside His almighty power, His high command as Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, even His
divinity. The statements above are very clear. He was not the Lord God Almighty when on this
earth because He had left that position to become a man in a sin filled world. But that doesn’t
mean He was not the Lord God Almighty before He left heaven and after He returned to
Heaven.
If we reread the original statement: “The man Christ Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty,
yet Christ and the Father are one” we will notice the word “was” not the word “is.” He was not
the Lord God Almighty while on earth, He had left that when He left heaven, but He is the Lord
God Almighty again after returning to heaven and will be forever.
Why does this matter?
If Christ, the Son of God, is the Almighty to say that He is not is to take away one of His
names, His titles, it is to take away glory and honor to One to whom it is entitled. It is Satan’s
work. Satan, the one who desired the place of the Son of God in the heavenly mansions is the
author of all theories robbing Christ of the glory and honor that are rightfully His.
Is Christ Almighty God? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 15
In this time in earth’s history we should be lifting Christ up before the people in all His beauty
and majesty. Let us not take away anything that pertains to our Almighty Redeemer and let us
restore to the world a fuller understanding of His greatness.
“Lift him up, the Saviour of souls, lift him up higher and still higher before the people.
It is time now to gather strength from the source of all strength, to cry aloud and spare
not, to press back the clouds of darkness, that the light of heaven may be
revealed.”--Review & Herald, April 29, 1909, par. 6

Is Christ AlmightyGod? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 1 This paper is the result of my personal study of the “Almighty” in Scripture and the writings of Sister White. Comments, suggestions, and criticism are welcome to my email thebooksearcher@gmail.com or through Facebook. The question of whether the name and attribute “Almighty” applies only to the Father or whether it applies to both the Father and the Son is a controversial topic these days. Our only safety in questions like these is to rely upon inspiration. First, we’re going to look at evidence in the book of Revelation. The first time the Almighty is mentioned in Revelation is verse eight of chapter one: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Rev. 1:8 At first glance it seems like this verse is speaking of the Father because in verse five the Father is referred to as “Him which is, and which was, and which is the come” but let’s look a little deeper. Who is the Alpha and Omega? The subsequent verses give us the answer. “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle...I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Rev. 1:10-13,18 John hears a great voice saying, I am Alpha and Omega, and turning to see who was speaking, sees Christ standing in the Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary as our high priest (Heb. 2:17; 6:19,20). If Christ is Alpha and Omega in verse 11 He must also be Alpha and Omega in verse 8, where He is also referenced as the Almighty. Let’s look at the next verse mentioning “the Almighty.” “And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.” Rev. 4:8 In this verse the Almighty must refer to the Father for we do not see the Son in the scene of Revelation 4. The Father is there as well as the Spirit. The angels, the elders and the four living creatures are present but Christ is not seen. This is because He was on the earth as our Saviour in this scene. In Revelation 5, which is the continuation of chapter 4, Christ appears as
  • 2.
Is Christ AlmightyGod? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 2 the “Lamb who was slain” who also is “the Lion of the tribe of Judah,” the only One who can open the book. So we must conclude that it is the Father who is called the Almighty in chapter 4. Revelation 11:17 may also be referencing the Father. The next place we find “the Almighty” is Revelation 15: “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.” Rev. 15:3,4 It seems obvious that if this is the “song of the Lamb” the Lord God Almighty must be Christ. If it refers to the Father the singers would have failed to sing about Christ in His own song. That isn’t plausible. Rev. 17:14 and 19:16 make it clear that the Lamb is KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Every knee will bow at the name of Christ (Phl. 2:10) and worship Him, while the 144,000 sing the song Moses and the Lamb, “Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.” (Rev. 15:3,4). Let’s skip the two verses mentioning the Almighty in Rev. 16 and discuss them in connection with Rev. 19:15: And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. Rev. 19:15 This verse is obviously referring to Christ for He it is that has a sharp sword going out of His mouth (Rev. 1:16) and He it is who will rule the nations with a rod of iron (Rev. 2:27, 12:5) but is this wrath of Almighty God His own wrath or the wrath of His Father? The wrath of God is revealed in the pouring out of the plagues in Revelation 16. In verse 7 it says “And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments,” which is very similar to the language found in the song of Moses and the Lamb. These judgments are the wrath of God manifested. Verse 14 talks of the spirits of demons gathering the kings of the earth and the whole world to the “great day of God Almighty.” Whose wrath is revealed on that great day of God Almighty? “And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Rev. 6:16,17
  • 3.
Is Christ AlmightyGod? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 3 It is the great day of the Lamb’s wrath. So the “fierceness and wrath of God Almighty” in Rev. 19:15 must be the Lamb’s wrath, the wrath of the Son of God. The Bible is unequivocal here. Almighty God is Christ. It is His own wrath here revealed to the world, not the wrath of His Father. There is one more reference to Almighty God in the book of Revelation: “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” Rev. 21:22 Here God Almighty must be God the Father because the Lamb is mentioned separately. As we’ve studied, the name “Almighty God” is used both for the Father and the Son. They are both God Almighty. Let’s look at the testimony of Ellen White. Dozens of times she calls Christ the Alpha and the Omega: “There should be connected with our school, those who are strong-minded and whole- souled Christians, who receive and believe in Christ as the Alpha and Omega....”--The Advocate, May 1, 1899, par. 1 “Christ says, ‘Behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.’”--Australasian Union Conference Record, Sept. 15, 1902, par. 2 “Let Christ be presented as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, of the great plan of redemption. Present to the people such subjects as will strengthen their confidence in God and in his word, and lead them to investigate its teachings for themselves. And as they go forward, step by step, in the study of the Bible, they will be better prepared to appreciate the beauty and harmony of its precious truths.”--Review & Herald, Nov. 25, 1890, par. 5 “Christ must be our all and in all, the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”--Review & Herald, May 3, 1892, par. 2 “What a Saviour we have! It was he that revealed himself to John on the Isle of Patmos, and proclaimed, ‘I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.’ None but just such an ever-living, mighty God, could pay the ransom to save sinners from going down into the pit of death.”--Review & Herald, Feb. 18, 1896, par. 5

For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.’ Here we have the Alpha of Genesis and the Omega of Revelation. The blessing is promised to all those who keep the commandments of God, and who co-operate with him in the proclamation of the third angel’s message. “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” That which Christ has spoken in the Old Testament is for all the world. What he has said in reference to his commandments is not yea and nay, but yea and amen.”--Review & Herald, June 8, 1897, par. 9,10 “Christ is nothing to us unless he is our Guide, our Counselor, our Alpha and Omega, our all and in all. If Christ abides with us, self must be dead, for our very spiritual life is to have self hid with Christ in God.”--The Sabbath-School Worker, July 1, 1894, par. 3 Ellen White on the Old Testament references to Almighty God Abraham “After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” Gen 15:1 ‘In a vision of the night the divine Voice was again heard. “Fear not, Abram,” were the words of the Prince of princes; “I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” But his mind was so oppressed by forebodings that he could not now grasp the promise with unquestioning confidence as heretofore. He prayed for some tangible evidence that it would be fulfilled. And how was the covenant promise to be realized, while the gift of a son was withheld? “What wilt Thou give me,” he said, “seeing I go childless?” “And, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.” He proposed to make his trusty servant Eliezer his son by adoption, and the inheritor of his possessions. But he was assured that a child of his own was to be his heir. Then he was led outside his tent, and told to look up to the unnumbered stars glittering in the heavens; and as he did so, the words were spoken, “So shall thy seed be.” “Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” Romans 4:3.’--Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 136, par. 3
  • 5.
Is Christ AlmightyGod? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 5 “But Jesus understands the subtle arts of the enemy, and He can keep our feet in safe paths. He said on one occasion to His servant, ‘Fear not, Abraham; I am thy shield.’ [Genesis 15:1.] He will say the same to you if you will place yourself under His protection.”--Letter 204-1907 Ellen White here says that the LORD who talked to Abraham in Gen. 15 about His childless situation was the Prince of princes, the Son of God, Jesus Christ (Rev. 1:5). Again the LORD appears to Abraham, promising that He would be the father of many nations: And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. Gen. 17:1 This time the LORD says, “I am the Almighty God.” If it was the Son of God talking to Abraham about His childless condition in chapter 15, it only makes sense that the same One with the same name would talk to Him about the same subject in chapter 17. In chapter 18 the LORD again appears to Abraham: And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; Gen. 18:1 About this chapter Ellen White says: “It was Christ who spoke with Abraham under the oaks at Mamre.”--Desire of Ages, p. 290 “Three angels disguised as men appeared to Abraham as he sat in the door of his tent. They were strangers to Abraham, but he treated them courteously, and supplied all their necessities as human beings, knowing not that one of those whom he entertained was no less than the Son of God.”--Manuscript 7-1897.6 “Two of the heavenly messengers departed, leaving Abraham alone with Him whom he now knew to be the Son of God.”--Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 139 If ‘the LORD’ in chapters 15 and 18 was Christ, the Son of God, the LORD in chapter 17 must have been the Son of God as well. There can’t be multiple LORDS talking to Abraham. And if it was Christ speaking in chapter 17:1 He must be the Almighty God who appeared to Abraham so many times. And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. Ex. 6:3
  • 6.
Is Christ AlmightyGod? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 6 Moses JEHOVAH in the previous verse is the same name that is translated LORD in almost every other instance. The same LORD who appeared to Abraham under the name God Almighty here speaks with Moses. As we’ve read from Sister White, this is none other than the Son of God. A few chapters previous in chapter 3 the LORD appears to Moses in the burning bush (verses 2,4) as the I AM. This was Jesus Christ as well. We can be sure that this was Jesus Christ because of Jesus’s own words in John 8:58,59: Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.--John 8:58-59 Jesus takes the name and title I AM. The Jews knew exactly what He was saying. They knew He was claiming to be the I AM who talked with Moses from the burning bush. Ellen White confirms this in the following statements: ‘Gideon desired some token that the one now addressing him was the same that spoke to Moses in the burning bush. The angel had veiled the divine glory of his presence, but it was no other than Christ, the Son of God. When a prophet or an angel delivered a divine message, his words were, “The Lord saith, I will do this,” but it is stated of the Person who talked with Gideon, “The Lord said unto him, I will be with thee.”’--Signs of the Times, June 23, 1881, Art. A, par. 16 “The humanity of the Son of God is everything to us. It is the golden chain that binds our souls to Christ, and through Christ to God. This is to be our study. Christ was a real man; he gave proof of his humility in becoming a man. Yet he was God in the flesh. When we approach this subject, we would do well to heed the words spoken by Christ to Moses at the burning bush, “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” We should come to this study with the humility of a learner, with a contrite heart. And the study of the incarnation of Christ is a fruitful field, which will repay the searcher who digs deep for hidden truth.”--The Youth Instructor, Oct. 13, 1898, par. 6 “The cloud that guided Israel stood over the tabernacle. The glory of the cloud emanated from Jesus Christ, who from the midst of the glory talked with Moses as He had talked with him from the burning bush.”--Manuscript 126-1901.6 “Christ, the Light of the world, was revealed to Moses in the burning bush, and Moses was appointed to make known the superiority of Jehovah over every false deity.”--Manuscript 20-1895.2

Alleluia!” And the chariot rolled upward to the Holy City. Jesus threw open the gates of the golden city and led us in. Here we were made welcome, for we had kept the “commandments of God,” and had a “right to the tree of life.”’--Early Writings, 35, par. 1 “The earth mightily shook as the voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping saints. They responded to the call and came forth clothed with glorious immortality, crying, “Victory, victory, over death and the grave! O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” Then the living saints and the risen ones raised their voices in a long, transporting shout of victory. Those bodies that had gone down into the grave bearing the marks of disease and death came up in immortal health and vigor. The living saints are changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and caught up with the risen ones, and together they meet their Lord in the air. Oh, what a glorious meeting! Friends whom death had separated were united, never more to part. On each side of the cloudy chariot were wings, and beneath it were living wheels; and as the chariot rolled upward, the wheels cried, “Holy,” and the wings, as they moved, cried, “Holy,” and the retinue of holy angels around the cloud cried, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!” And the saints in the cloud cried, “Glory! Alleluia!” And the chariot rolled upward to the Holy City. Before entering the city, the saints were arranged in a perfect square, with Jesus in the midst. He stood head and shoulders above the saints and above the angels. His majestic form and lovely countenance could be seen by all in the square.”--Early Writings, p. 287, par. 1,2 “On each side of the cloudy chariot are wings, and beneath it are living wheels; and as the chariot rolls upward, the wheels cry, “Holy,” and the wings, as they move, cry, “Holy,” and the retinue of angels cry, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.” And the redeemed shout, “Alleluia!” as the chariot moves onward toward the New Jerusalem. Before entering the City of God, the Saviour bestows upon His followers the emblems of victory and invests them with the insignia of their royal state.”--The Great Controversy, p. 645

It was in faith—faith in God’s love and care—that Jesus rested, and the power of that word which stilled the storm was the power of God.”--The Desire of Ages, p. 336, par. 1 “Turning to the priests and elders, Christ fixed upon them His searching glance. The words He spoke they would never forget as long as life should last. They were as the sharp arrows of the Almighty. With dignity He said: You come out against Me with swords and staves as you would against a thief or a robber. Day by day I sat teaching in the temple. You had every opportunity of laying hands upon Me, and you did nothing. The night is better suited to your work. ‘This is your hour, and the power of darkness.’” --The Desire of Ages, p. 697.1 “The heavens glow with the dawning of eternal day, and like the melody of angel songs the words fall upon the ear: ‘Stand fast to your allegiance. Help is coming.’ Christ, the almighty Victor, holds out to His weary soldiers a crown of immortal glory; and His voice comes from the gates ajar: ‘Lo, I am with you. Be not afraid. I am acquainted with all your sorrows; I have borne your griefs. You are not warring against untried enemies. I have fought the battle in your behalf, and in My name you are more than conquerors.’” {GC 632.3} “As if entranced, the wicked have looked upon the coronation of the Son of God. They see in His hands the tables of the divine law, the statutes which they have despised and transgressed. They witness the outburst of wonder, rapture, and adoration from the saved; and as the wave of melody sweeps over the multitudes without the city, all with one voice exclaim, ‘Great and marvelous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of saints’ (Revelation 15:3); and, falling prostrate, they worship the Prince of life. Satan seems paralyzed as he beholds the glory and majesty of Christ. He who was once a covering cherub remembers whence he has fallen. He sees another now standing near to the Father, veiling His glory. He has seen the crown placed upon the head of Christ by an angel of lofty stature and majestic presence, and he knows that the exalted position of this angel might have been his. --The Great Controversy, 668,669 “What a Saviour we have! There was breathed into him the breath of the Almighty, and he became a living soul. Adam was perfect in form—strong, comely, pure, bearing the image of his Maker. God gave him a companion, a wife, to share with him the beauties of nature. In order for this holy pair to continue to be happy, God gave them something to do. The fact that they were holy did not debar them from working. God is never idle. To every one of the angelic host is given an appointed task. --10 Manuscript Releases, p. 326.4 ‘In our warfare we have Christ’s promise, “He that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him” He manifested Himself to John, who had been banished by his persecutors to the lonely isle of Patmos. Is Christ AlmightyGod? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 12 “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” [Matthew 3:17.] These words were loud and most powerful, not resembling any human sound. This heavenly demonstration was given that the whole surrounding multitude might take in the exalted, holy mission of the promised One, and the work to be accomplished through Him—the Prince of Life—as the promised Messiah, the almighty, powerful Saviour, the long-looked-for Redeemer, the Deliverer of Israel and the Saviour of the world. --Manuscript 63-1910.6 ‘His people would never know defeat if they would abide under the shadow of the Almighty, for one mightier than angels would fight by their side in every battle. It was this unseen General of armies who revealed Himself to Joshua. He appeared to Joshua as a man [representing] the Lord God of the host of Israel, for had He appeared in His glory the armies of Israel would have been destroyed. After the death of Moses, the reins of government were placed in the hands of Joshua. As the servant of the Lord, he was given a special work to do. His office carried with it great honor and responsibility, and the instruction given to Moses was transferred to him in a marked manner. “Now therefore,” the Lord said, “arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said to Moses.” [Joshua 1:2, 3.]’--Manuscript 134-1899.13-14 What about Ellen White’s statement that says “the man Christ Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty”? A careful search of Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy has revealed that Christ, the Son of God, is indeed called the Almighty in many instances. But there is a statement from sister White that seems to contradict her other statements. Let’s look at it: ‘There is no one who can explain the mystery of the incarnation of Christ. Yet we know that He came to this earth and lived as a man among men. The man Christ Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Father are one. The Deity did not sink under the agonizing torture of Calvary, yet it is none the less true that "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."’ John 3:16. 18 - 18LtMs, Ms 140, 1903, par. 28 This would seem to be a conclusive statement if we hadn’t already read dozens of statements saying the opposite--that Christ is indeed the Almighty--but we know that “one saying of the Saviour must not be made to destroy another” so there must be a way to reconcile these two ideas together. If we read the preceding paragraph to this one we may get a clue to what it is talking about:

Is Christ AlmightyGod? prepared by Robert LaCelle III 13 “Christ left His position in the heavenly courts and came to this earth to live the life of human beings. This sacrifice He made in order to show that Satan's charge against God is false—that it is possible for man to obey the laws of God's kingdom. Equal with the Father, honored and adored by the angels, in our behalf Christ humbled Himself and came to this earth to live a life of lowliness and poverty—to be a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Yet the stamp of divinity was upon His humanity. He came as a divine Teacher, to uplift human beings, to increase their physical, mental, and spiritual efficiency.” --18LtMs, Ms 140, 1903, par. 27 Christ left behind His heavenly position as equal to the Father to humble Himself as man on this earth. As a man Christ was no longer the Lord God Almighty. He had laid aside His position to save us from our sins. What did laying aside His position entail? “When Jesus was awakened to meet the storm, He was in perfect peace. There was no trace of fear in word or look, for no fear was in His heart. But He rested not in the possession of almighty power. It was not as the “Master of earth and sea and sky” that He reposed in quiet. That power He had laid down, and He says, “I can of Mine own self do nothing.” John 5:30. He trusted in the Father’s might. It was in faith—faith in God’s love and care—that Jesus rested, and the power of that word which stilled the storm was the power of God.” --The Desire of Ages, 336.1 “Jesus, the Majesty of heaven, the royal King of heaven, laid aside his royalty, left his throne of glory, his high command, and came into our world to bring to fallen man, weakened in moral power, and corrupted by sin, aid divine. He clothed his divinity with humanity, that he might reach to the very depths of human woe and misery, to lift up fallen man. By taking upon himself man's nature, he raised humanity in the scale of moral value with God. These great themes are almost too high, too deep, too infinite, for the comprehension of finite minds.” Review & Herald, Dec. 9, 1884, par. 3. “Jesus left all his glory, and became poor, that we through his poverty might be made rich. But how few of his professed followers appreciate his great sacrifice!”--Review & Herald, Mar. 15, 1887, par. 16. “Christ gave himself a living sacrifice. He emptied himself of his high prerogatives, left his mansions of glory, his throne and high command, and became poor, that we through his poverty might be made rich.”--Signs of the Times, April 22, 1897, par. 1. “He had a full consciousness of His divinity; but He had laid aside His royal crown and kingly robes, and had taken the form of a servant. One of the last acts of His life on

He humbled Himself and took our nature that we might be able to learn of Him and, imitating His life of benevolence and self-denial, follow Him step by step to heaven.” 2 Testimonies, 169. At the time when He was most needed, Jesus, the Son of God, the world's Redeemer, laid aside His divinity, and came to earth in the garb of humanity.” Bible Echo Oct. 12, 1896, par. 1. When the Son of God laid aside His position on the throne of the universe, it meant leaving His throne, His mansions, His royal crown and kingly robes, even all of His glory. It meant laying aside His almighty power, His high command as Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, even His divinity. The statements above are very clear. He was not the Lord God Almighty when on this earth because He had left that position to become a man in a sin filled world. But that doesn’t mean He was not the Lord God Almighty before He left heaven and after He returned to Heaven. If we reread the original statement: “The man Christ Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Father are one” we will notice the word “was” not the word “is.” He was not the Lord God Almighty while on earth, He had left that when He left heaven, but He is the Lord God Almighty again after returning to heaven and will be forever. Why does this matter? If Christ, the Son of God, is the Almighty to say that He is not is to take away one of His names, His titles, it is to take away glory and honor to One to whom it is entitled. It is Satan’s work. Satan, the one who desired the place of the Son of God in the heavenly mansions is the author of all theories robbing Christ of the glory and honor that are rightfully His.
