Meiosis creates gametes like sperm and eggs that have half the number of chromosomes as regular body cells. During meiosis, the parent cell's 46 chromosomes replicate and the cell undergoes two divisions, resulting in four gametes that each have 23 chromosomes. When a male and female gamete unite during fertilization, they form a zygote with the full 46 chromosomes needed to create a new organism. Meiosis introduces genetic variation that leads to diversity among offspring.
