Notes for a detailed analysis of a similar product to my chosen genre
Alternative Rock
Artist: Muse
Music Video: Hysteria

Camerawork:
A moving low angle opens up the video, down a hall where a cleaner is
knocking on a door: shows opening scene, like an establishing shot just from a
different angle.

Panning is used to show the man lying on his bed, in a vulnerable position
as if he’s really hurt.
Close ups + panning + point of view + handheld camera team up: shows
man is distressed, panicking, and then showing the state of his room (messy,
things broken, etc.) whilehandheld camera emphasises his anger and unstable
state.
Extreme close up showing the man’s interest in the video that he recorded
but can’t remember doing it.

Editing:
Jump cuts are all over the video: especially when the man is throwing and
destroying things in his room; shows edgy and unstable behaviour combined
with anger.
Eyeline match when the man is watching the recordings he made but can’t
remember doing them; combined with close ups from camerawork to emphasise
his curiosity and confusion.
A lot of cuttingis used in the video, which emphasises an edgy and
distorted feeling about it, which is exactly what the man in the video is feeling
after waking up with no memory of why his room is destroyed, then to express
anger when he destroys it himself in the recorded video he finds.

Sounds:
The song is basically the only sound that can be heard during the whole
video which is non-diegetic, as far as you can tell, because no one reacts to the
sound of the music, nor is it coming from a radio or anything because there are
no signs of it.
The song itself matches what’s going on in the video, both through the
sound generated and the lyrics. The heavier sections are played when the man is
destroying things in his room and the calmer but eerier parts are played when
he is simply confused and looking around.

Mise-en-scene:
Props would include the broken objects in the room, the video camera
that shows what happened to the room.
Costumes include the cleaner’s outfit at the beginning, showing she is
trying to clean any mess but the man in the room shuts her out. The main
himself is wearing no top, showing how much he is sweating.

Low key lighting is used a lot to create mystery and uncertainty.
