2. NOTE-TAKING:
 Note-taking is the practice of recording information captured from another
source.
 By taking notes, the writer records the essence of the information, freeing their
mind from having to recall everything. Notes are commonly drawn from a
“transient source”, such as an oral discussion at a meeting, or a lecture in which
case the notes may be the only record of the event.

3. COGNITIVE PSYOCHOLOGY
 Note-taking is a central aspect of a complex human behavior related to information
management involving a range of underlying mental processes.
 The person taking notes must acquire and filter the incoming sources, organize and
restructure existing knowledge structures, comprehend and write down their
explanation of the information, and ultimately store and integrate the freshly processed
material. The result is a knowledge representation, and a memory storage.

text.

answer them creatively. Use your creative ideas when answering exam questions, in classroom discussions,
and when writing papers.
 Review: Before reading or studying new material, take ten minutes to quickly review your older notes.
Review enhances your retention of old material while adding new material to your memory.

 1. Prepare- Read any background texts that have been suggested, re-read your notes from previous
lectures or classes on this course so that you can see easily where this session fits into the overall
pattern of the subject.
 2. Listen- The key to good note-taking is understanding. Pick up on the phrases, voice changes and
other, sometimes non-verbal, cues that the lecturer uses to communicate which are the key points
of the session.
 3. Write only what's needed- Not everything in a lecture or seminar session will be of equal
significance.
 4. Organize your notes- Develop a system of highlighting headings and sub-headings (using bullet
points, underlining, indenting, etc.) that makes intuitive sense to you and stick with that from lecture
to lecture.
 5. Review- Re-reading shortly after writing notes means that you will be more likely to remember
and understand them, and the process of pulling out the key ideas from the lecture in the left hand
column of your note sheets will therefore be very much smoother
