1. North Park Area of Buffalo
Student of Dr. Johnson
Community Studies
Photo Walk Slide Show
2. • The topic I chose to document for my Photo
Walk Slide Show comes from the chapter
titled The Urban World.
• The specific topic in the chapter I chose to
look at further for the Photo Walk is the topic
of “Urbanism”.
3. • I chose this topic because it seems to me that
there is a lot of urbanism to experience in the
North Park Area in Buffalo, NY- especially
around Hertel Ave.
• J. John Palen defined “urbanism” as referring
to the social patterns and behaviors with living
in cities
– It is a social and behavioral response to living in
cities
4. • I took a walk around the blocks beginning at
Colvin Ave., up Tacoma Ave to Starin Ave.,
turned right to Hertel Ave., and went back
toward Colvin Ave.
• Here is a link to a map of the area
• North Park Map There is additional
information on this website, about the
neighborhood, from City.Data.com
5. • For instance:
• Median household income: $49,615
Median house or condo value: $127,846
Median contract rent: $651
Unemployment: 9.93%
Residents below the poverty level: 9.1%
Median resident age: 39.2
84 % of the Population is White
• 9 % of the Population is Hispanic
• 4 % of the Population is Black
6. Nice Neighborhood
• As I walked through the neighborhood on this
spring day, I noticed there are many houses
that are double family homes. They are often
called “North Buffalo Doubles”
7. • The homes seem to be
taken care of by the
owners or landlords.
• This one was for sale
• According to Zillow
Real Estate, it sold for
$255,000
8. New Uses for Old Buildings
• Another interesting observation I made was
how churches are being turned into
apartments or other kinds of living places. On
my walk I saw two of them.
• Another building I saw was an old post office
that is now a business.
9. Tacoma and Parkside- corner
This church is now used as residential space-
condominiums
11. Is now called “The Lofts at Warwick”
Apartment and Commercial Space
12. Old Post Office is a computer business
Hertel and Colvin Ave.
13. Hertel Ave.
• Hertel Ave. is the main corridor in the
neighborhood. Many types of businesses are
on the street. It seems there are apartments
over many of them.
• Businesses include restaurants, antique shops,
coffee shops, furniture stores, small
boutiques, a theater and more
18. • I think one way to feel urbanism is related to
how many people are found outdoors. In the
North Park area, people were walking and
driving.
• On Hertel Ave. many people were on the
street, outside of restaurants and taverns, and
also walking to where they were going.
• People seem comfortable in the environment.
21. • As I walked through the neighborhood I could
feel the urbanism. The neighborhood felt
comfortable, and pretty.
• It combined the old with the new
– old homes and old businesses
– new homes in old places
– new businesses in old buildings
• With things to do
22. Finally-
• I appreciate being able to experience being in
the North Park area, even for a short time,
take my notes and photographs, and then
present it in a way that makes sense.
• Community Studies is about being able to
make sense of our places using a sociological
approach. The Photo Walk Experience and
assignments helped me to do just that!
