2. SUBURBS
• The Topic I chose for my Photo Walk Slide Show comes
from the chapter titled The Suburban Era, as well as a
bit coming from the chapter Metro and Edge City
Growth
• I took a bit out of each chapters and the specific topics
that I looked more into where the topics “Suburban
Business Growth”, “Malling of the Land”, “Suburban
Dominance” and “Emergence of Suburbs”
3. • I chose this topic because I think it is interesting that there is a nice suburban area so
close to some of us and we might not be aware
• I also thought it was interesting that the suburb is not to far from a city like Lockport
that once looked better and thrived at one point
• The area of the suburb that I found intriguing because of the location and how it looks is
Walnut Street in Lockport
• J. John Palen talked about Suburbs and they “have been transformed from being
primarily outlying residential areas to being the nations new economic and commercial
cores” as well as “a green or pleasant oasis with single-family homes, neighbors,
children, dogs and bikes- is one that still has force”
4. • I parked my truck at Ace Hardware, walked down Walnut Street then walked away from
Walnut and walked south down Davidson Rd and then returned back
• Here is a map of the location I walked around
• Here is a link to see the area and better understand the location
• Map of Area Around Walnut St.
5. • As I walked through the Neighborhood I noticed the many of the houses were all
taken well care of
• All the houses had lawn mowed nice and short, no garbage laying around and it
seemed as if everyone fell safe
• A view of when I first go on the Street
6. • All the houses in this area seem to be well maintained
• Not many houses also seem to be for sale, I would think that the people that live in
this area don’t mind being where they live
• Here is a link of only a couple houses for sale in this area
• Only Houses for Sale
7. APARTMENTS NEARBY
• One thing I found interesting on my walk were the many different apartment
buildings near the area
• One street over on Tudor Lane I noticed that when you go by, that all you see are
apartments. It was quite a big development
8. • These were some more apartments right on Davidson Rd. as well
9. DAVIDSON RD
• One thing I found interesting are all the businesses that are just seconds away
• You have food and drinks just down the road from you
• You can go out to eat, or go have a drink at the bar, or you can go and do both
13. PLACES FOR HOBBIES
• One more thing I found pretty neat were the golf courses nearby
• There is a golf course about 20 seconds down Davidson Rd and another one 30
seconds north on Davidson
• As well as these golf courses, there is also a soccer, rugby and baseball/softball fields
directly across Walnut Street
• This interests someone when living in the suburbs because it gives them something
to do and it also gives them the feeling of being away and out of the urban world
14. NIAGARA GOLF COURSE
• This golf course also offers some food and alcoholic beverages inside which also
attract many nearby neighbors
16. ACE HARDWARE
• Although their weren’t many places of business, there was some
• There was an Ace Hardware at the end of Walnut Street, a 7-11 and a laundromat
down the road on Davidson
17. • As I walked around this area I could see how many people would have wanted to
move to an area that is similar
• The suburban lifestyle gives you more space, privacy but keeps you within the limits
of the city
• Provides own yard and driveway
• Has a comfortable and safe feeling
• Minutes from businesses' and activity locations
• People can commute to work if it’s a big city such as
Buffalo
18. TO CONCLUDE
• The photo walk made me see the suburban feel come to life as it is described in the
book
• These findings also made me realize that when people are trying to flee the
urbanism but still stay within commuting distance from work, stores, and hobbies
• This experience made me better understand how the residents in this area go about
their way of life and how most share a common goal/interest
• This walk also made me see how the safe and friendly environment can bring
neighbors closer to one another and how they can share pastimes together
