2. • The topic I chose to document for my Photo
Walk Slide Show comes from the chapter 12
Housing Policies, Sprawl, and Smart Growth.
• The specific topic in the chapter I chose to
look at further for the Photo Walk is the topic
of “Public Housing”.
3. • I chose this topic because there is a lot of public housing in
Buffalo, Ny to experience. Also because the Langfield
projects is approximately 12-15 minutes away from my home.
It is Buffalo, New York’s 1st public housing project, located
on what had previously been vacant land a few miles
northeast of the city’s downtown.
• In Palens text it states that “public housing” was originally
designed to provide standard quality housing for those who
could not afford decent
-there are about 3.4 million persons currently living in 1.2
million public housing units
4. When I went to take the pictures of the homes and the surroundings of the
projects I didn’t get out the car because it’s not the safest neighborhood.
I drove around the whole entire neighborhood.
Langfield/Kenfield public home are considered Buffalo’s largest public
housing project.
I got on the Kensington Expressway from where I was coming from, Got off
on Suffolk and took a right. You will immediately see the homes.
5. *Here is a link of a map of the area.
Buffalo-NY.html
6. As I found on this website
https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ny/buffalo/langfield-dr
Langfield Dr / Suffolk St median real estate price is $69,466, which is less
expensive than 96.3% of New York neighborhoods and 96.3% of all U.S.
neighborhoods.
The average rental price in Langfield Dr / Suffolk St is currently $539, Rents here
are currently lower in price than 99.9% of New York neighborhoods.
7. Police Station
As I drove through the neighborhood I noticed as soon as I turned on Bailey Ave
and Langfield Dr on the corner the Buffalo Police Station was located.
8. I also noticed while driving around that around the area there
were a lot of schools close by each other.
● They were literally 4-5 minutes from each other
● It was kind of hard to pull over and park on some of the
streets because there we buses taking up most of the
street and the opposite side you can’t park on.
● During the day you often see a lot of children walking, I
know this because I am familiar with the neighborhood
9. Frederick Law Olmsted School Also Known As Kensington High School
-Located on Suffolk St and
Hempstead Ave which is a
block over from Langfield Dr
11. Charter School Of Inquiry Located Right Off The
Kensington Expressway On Edison Ave
12. * Bailey Ave is is the main corridor in the neighborhood.
* There was an accident as you can see In the picture In the
right hand corner.
* On Bailey there are things from nail shops, stores,
restaurants, bowling, gas station etc. YOU NAME IT
13. The neighborhood Isn’t the cleanest
● There where garbage all over the place
● Garbage cans on the ground
● It wasn’t just in one area, In all of there parking lots trash was
flying around outside
16. In Palen text it stated that “In the 1960’s families living In the
projects were mostly female headed and on welfare”.
From my experience from outside of the projects I wouldn't be
able to tell if people were on welfare but I could tell you that I seen
more women than I seen men coming out there homes and its
2018. But from what I believe I think that it’s pretty much evened
out between men and women both staying in the
Langfield/Kenfield Public Homes.
18. Other things I noticed was
● A church that I seen a lot people coming out of
● A big cemetery ( where the projects ended) on Weston Ave
● Kenfield’s Maintenance Shop
22. Finally
* I appreciate being able to experience being able to drive
around and explore the Langfield/Kenfield Projects even for a
short time, take my notes and photographs, and then present
it in a way that makes sense.
* This experience enhanced my ability to apply my knowledge
of the topic in the community because I live close to the
Kenfield homes and I am from Buffalo and now when I drive
past other public housing that I know of I am going to look
and observe if there are any differences from the one I did my
little bit of research on.
