Charles A. Bell was elected to the Newark
Municipal Council as Central Ward Council
Member in May 2002 and re-elected in November Charles A. Bell
2008. Charles was born and raised in New Bern,
North Carolina and comes from a family of eleven Central Ward Councilman
children.
Council Member Bell was very active in the civil rights movement in the South and served as president of the
NAACP Youth Council in New Bern, North Carolina. He moved to Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in
Brooklyn, New York, where he participated in freedom marches, mass demonstrations and boycotts.
Council Member Bell continued his study of chemistry at the Brooklyn Community College and later at the
Newark College of Engineering, specializing in Organic Chemistry. After gaining his degree he joined the
Continental Chemical Company in Newark where he was hired as a Chemist and advanced to the level of
Supervisor. In 1964 he was hired by the Troy Chemical Company as their Quality Control Chemist where he
was in charge of research and development of organic compounds and chemical additives used in food.
In 1968 Mr. Bell became active in civil rights issues, community services and labor relations in Newark. He
graduated that year from Rutgers University after taking courses and workshops in Contemporary Labor.
Council Member Bell has attended Seton Hall University, and the Universities of Maryland and Missouri to
update his knowledge in community organization and collective bargaining. He worked on problems of
racism, prejudice, deprivation of health services, education, unemployment, strikes, boycotts, job actions and
acts of violence.
In 1965, Council Member Bell became the Assistant Director of D.C. 37 AFSCME of AFL-CIO, and also
became President and CEO of the Newark Housing Council. He has served the Newark community as a
member of the Newark Board of Education since July 1, 1970 and is a former President of the Board.
Council Member Bell is a proud husband of Lillie B. Bell and father of Cynthia, Myriam, and Kelli, and the
grandfather of five. He lives in Newark Central which he represents.
