We talk about mentoring a lot in the software industry, but how much do any of us really know about how to mentor? If we’re honest with ourselves, we are probably making it up as we go. This talk will hopefully move beyond that and move towards having a purpose to our mentoring relationships. We will take a look at how to start a mentoring relationship, setting a purpose for the mentorship and ultimately how to make the most out of it. Whether you are a mentor, a mentee or even someone who is just interested in possibly doing this someday then you will benefit from this talk.

Life happens in moments.
Our lives happen in a day. The only thing that really exists in a life is a day. If we are not present, we are already half dead. There are no cumulative moments, there are only details, there are only days. And we waste most of them.
Every moment of every day, you have a choice to make. You can either let the minutes pass you by or you can claim them for what they are: opportunities to unlock the full depth of life’s potential.
Life happens in moments, and if we are not paying attention, we will miss what they are really all about.

The political climate of today is different from what it used to be. The Presidential contenders of previous elections would debate fiercely on their own position, but then go out for a drink after their time was up. Respect was expected, and deserved, and given. America’s issues were shared by all citizens. Whoever spoke against integrity, honesty, empathy, and good moral values like these were looked down upon, and thought to be the outliers of American Society. But now, people who don’t hold these values are looked up to, are tolerated, and are gaining support everyday. Discrimination based on race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, mental handicap, and other attributes are now more public than ever, and aren’t questioned. We are divided based on the differences we see in other people. It’s not much different from America’s deadly past that most people think we’ve moved on from. But the truth is, we haven’t moved on at all. Things have only gotten worse.

Success is a result as well as poverty is a result. The formula for success is this: A few simple discipline practiced every day, while failure is the opposite: A few errors in judgement repeated every day.
By knowing this, accepting it as the truth and then learning success principles, you will make your life the best life you can ever live.

11. 1. Stories should be about real people who need something, hopefully something that YOUR
organization provides.
2. Allow the person in your story to have a real name, age, and to speak for themselves.
3. Minds wander, get real quickly. In about 4-10 seconds your listeners tune out if you haven’t
grabbed them. Don’t tell me you are going to tell me a story about someone, just tell it. Start with
the person’s name, age and a few descriptive words.
4. Keep your story short. Six words to two minutes is the length I recommend.
5. Allow your story to cause me to feel something. Anger, sadness, happiness, pride—it doesn’t
matter what the emotion is, I just have to feel something.
6. Your story should have a moment when people see themselves or someone in their own lives.
Could be their aging parents, the daughter of the person who made their latte today or their own
child.
7. The best stories are told by the person themselves. Clients telling their own stories are the
most moving way to share how your organization makes a difference.
