music journalism magazine and has been published since March
1952. It focuses on three genres of music
1. Rock
2. Alternative
3. Indie
First British paper to include a singles chart, in the 14th November 1952
edition.
Became best selling british music newspaper in the 1970’s.
It started off as a music newspaper but then went on to become a
magazine, this happened in the 1980’s – 1990’s and they changed
the newsprint in 1998.
Online version was launched in 1996, NME.com. Now It is the worlds
biggest music site with over 7 million users per month. The
magazines circulation in the first half of 2014 was 15,830 and
been in long term decline.
In February 2015 it was reported that NME were in discussions about
removing the cover price and becoming a free publication.
3. All NME front covers have a running
theme of using the colour red.
If it is a band on the front cover they use
a medium shot but if it is of a solo
artist they use a medium close up shot.
The artist who is featured on the front
cover will always have their name clear
to be seen, usually in red but
occasionally in white.
4. Who do NME use for their front cover?
NME have had some of the biggest artists in the
world as their main feature for their front
cover. This includes Arctic monkeys, Oasis
(Noel and Liam Gallagher), Florence and the
machine, Paramore and Amy Winehouse.
By using artists this massive, this is going to
attract the audience. The audience of NME is
people who are fans of Rock, Alternative and
Indie music.
