1. history
Indie rock originated in America and The United Kingdom in
the 1980s. As bands broke out into the mainstream in the 90s the
label was used for bands that kept an outsider and underground
perspective.
In the 90s the genre split into subgenres such as emo, noise pop
and post-rock.
In the 2000s, bands such as The Strokes broke into the
mainstream while playing basic guitar rock.
In the 80s it was bands such as Primal Scream that started the
scene of indie pop and were major influences in the British indie
scene as a whole.
2. artists.
All of these are artists that come
under the indie umbrella but vary
from indie rock to indie pop. I used a
variety of types of artists such as
bands and solo female and male
artists as I don’t know who my exact
target audience is yet so I decided to
think about a mix of different artists.
3. clothes.
Most of the clothes worn by artists of the indie genre are loose fitting and inspired by British 90s
fashion.
The clothes worn are usually very casual and don’t follow the trends that are currently in fashion which
fits in with the genre because it’s meant to be rebellious and as the title itself states, independent,
therefore their clothes reflect the fact that they don’t follow the crowd therefore the mainstream fashion.
This can represent them as a group of people who don’t care hoe others view them
Women artists in this genre are often seen wearing clothes typically seen as male such as flannels and
just t-shirts, however some times it’s presented in a more sexualised way that reviles a lot of their
bodies. This represent them as over sexualised and may be trying to appeal to a male audience; which is
the main target audience for indie music and magazines.
4. locations.
Most of these locations are ‘ran down’
and plain. It keeps the gunge aesthetic of
indie music and magazines. These
locations are also easily accessible for
the photoshoot.
5. indie in the charts
billboard hot 100 NME’s top albums
A 10th out of the NME top
albums of 2016 are from
indie artists. This shows that
there is a market in the genre
and that the music being
produced at the moment is
good and there’s an interest
in it
