Analysis

The Conjuring (2013)
During this
powerpoint i will
be analysing these
nine key frames in
the film opening of
The Conjuring
(2013)
The first frame
In this frame we see the two writers
Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes. More
importantly we can see a old chalk
board with a segment of a old
newspaper written in white chalk
about a ‘Ghost-hunter’. This could be
representing how old this story is as
back then we used to use chalk
boards. We can also see that there is
a segment of a newspaper written out
on the chalkboard which can indicate
something that happened a long time
ago and it was on the newspapers in
the past.
The Second Frame
Frame two shows a stage with
possibly two teachers leading a
class as we can see students or
children sitting down and looking up
on a presentation where we see who
the film was was produced by “Tony
DeRosa-Grund, Peter Safran and
Rob Cowan”. The shot seems to be
focused on the male and female up
on stage and appears to be a long
shot.
The Third Frame
In this Frame we can again see an
segment of a vintage newspaper which
reports ‘Haunted Artifacts Museum’
and in the picture we see a loads of
props on a shelf in a museum, with
things like old paintings and haunted
artifacts that seem to be possessed. We
can also see the production designer
'Julie Berghoff' which is highlighted in
small writing at the bottom of the
frame. Which signifies they clearly
want the audiences to focus on the
image and the title on this frame.
The fourth Frame
Frame four shows a close up photograph
of a lady which seems fairly happy and
appears to be smiling in front of a forest
or a farm. To the left side of the
photograph we can see some text which
is blured out and really hard to read and
identify what it says and this is done to
focus on the lady in the middle of the
image. We also see some titles on the
middle of the screen saying ‘Vera
Farmiga’ which is part of the production
team. The photograph is in black and
white and fits in with the vintage theme of
the whole opening of The Conjuring.
The fifth frame
Frame 5 shows a old family
photograph getting flipped over by a
man who was looking at it in one of
the previous frames.This shot doesn't
give much away. This can possibly by
a old family photograph of the family
that used to live at that house before
as the black and white effect adds a
representation to reveal something
without giving too much away.
The sixth frame
This shot shows a long shot of a family, we can see there
feat and there head with the surroundings of the
background clearly. At the start of this shot we can see the
faces of the 5 little girls and then in this frame that i am
analysing now the face of the little girls gets covered by the
titles which can possibly represent their death with in the
film or that its confidential identities so it don’t release their
identities creating a mysterious atmosphere. The titles that
appear are Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Hayley McFarland
and Mackenzie Foy, and each title covers the face of the
little girls. They appear to be standing by a house behind a
forest. This frame also links in with frame five which i was
analysing as that's the side of the photo which was getting
flipped over by a man.
The Seventh Frame
In frame 7 we can see a shadow/ghost by a
tree due to the lighting it's really hard to
identify what it is but this figure appears to be
really mysterious as its unclear to to see it, at
first sight this might appear to look like a
normal photograph of a tree but when you
look into it with detail you can see the palm of
someone's hand and the shape of the upper
body of a possible human. This frame creates
the feeling that the horror film will be based
around ghosts and other paranormal activities.
Lastly we can see who the music is done by
“Joseph Bishara”.
The Eight frame
This frame shows a close up shot of
males and female adults that appear to
have all there hands on the table
possibly looking at a ouija board. The
faces are smudged out and the others
are not facing the camera, this could
be as the film wants their identities to
be confidential as this film is based on
true facts, so this could be a real
photo. This shot also shows titles that
say ‘A James Wan Film’ and that title is
in the middle of the screen.
The ninth Frame
Frame 9 shows a long shot of a
house,and a noose hanging down
from a tree which shows a strong
image of suicide. This is the last
frame and comes with the final title
in the middle of the picture saying
‘the conjuring’. In this frame we
can also see the house which is
where the film will be based
around, also the fact that it’s a
single house in a middle of a
farm/forest adds a spooky
dimension to it.
How will this analysis help me ?
After analysing the opening of the conjuring (2013) it has given me a load of
ideas for my own film opening as we both share horror as the genre. From
the opening i can see that a lot of the scenes are fairly dark in a creepy
environment, that leaves loads of mysterious and makes us the audience
watching it ask questions about what is happening, so i think i will include
something along them lines in my film opening. The whole opening of the
Conjuring is in black and white and i think that is a good idea for a horror
film i will consider that idea when editing my film. Lastly after analysing the
Mise-en-scene used with the film opening it has given me plenty of ideas to
take forward and develop for my film opening.
