The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Frame 1
• This is the first frame and the opening of the credits of the film, with a
basic black and white base of colour, representing the fact that the
film will be based in the past. The text is black with a basic font,
portraying the meaning of dullness and gloominess and that the film
will include death. Also how the text is very small, compared to the
images, meaning that the film wants the audience to draw their
attention to the text.
3. Frame 2
• In this frame, again there is an absence of colour, using a dark and gloomy
background, portraying dullness and death. Presenting a house shows the audience
where the film might be set and how it is surrounded in smoke, combined with the
colour and shot type, makes the house look very dangerous and frightening to stay in.
This could cause unease towards the audience.
• Representing the directors name near the start of the opening credits shows the
importance of the role and the person, during the production of the film and how the
contrast of the white text and dark background also reinforce this.
4. Frame 3
• The presentation of an old news paper, in this frame, gives the effect of letting
the audience know how the film is set in the past and how the text of the
newspaper also reinforces this fact.
• Also, the absence of colour represents the theme of murkiness and gloominess,
portraying and foreshadowing the fact of death and murder being included in
the film.
5. Frame 4
• Due to the clothing worn by the people in this frame, and also how the black and white colours used,
this portrays the fact of the film being set in the past, maybe in the 70’s.Also, the two main people in
the frame might have some sort of role in the narrative of the film, although this may be true, the film
might want the audience to pay more attention on the producers’ names as they stand out more, with a
white background, in contrast to the majority of black in the frame thus showing the Producers’
importance. Also the presentation of quite a lot of people in this frame, and the black and white colour,
foreshadows how there will be a massacre of people in the film.
6. Frame 5
• This frame is another frame with a presentation of an old newspaper, with a dull and gloomy
effect, portraying how the film is based in the past and will consist of killing, death and
murder. Also how the title in the newspaper says ‘Ritualistic Sacrifices’ which might give an
awkward effect of the audience and also foreshadows killing and ‘Ritualistic’ content included
in the film. The skull in the background of the text of the newspaper also reinforces the fact of
there being the element of death in the film.
• The executive producers names are presented in big and bold writing, compared to the rest of
the text in the newspaper, which portrays the importance those people and how the film
wants the audience to focus most of their attention on the names.
7. Frame 6
• This frame is the representation of a book saying ‘Ghastly Apparition Image Captured’,
which describes how the film will consist elements of the paranormal and how the
antagonist will be some sort of ghost, demon or any other super natural being.
• The absence of colour helps notify the audience about how the film will be based in
the past, and how the dark and dull colours is used represent death and fear, which
portray as elements of this films’ genre.
8. Frame 7
• In this frame, we see a picture with a title above it saying ‘HauntedArtifacts Museum’
which demonstrates how this film will be scary and frightening. Also , by the film doing
this makes the film seem realistic thus being more scary as the opening is including
newspapers, images and artefacts related to how the antagonist is related to the film
and who or what they/it might be.The black and white colours also show how the film
is set in the past, also making the film seem more realistic.
9. Frame 8
• In this frame, we see another old newspaper, portraying the fact of this film being
represented in the past; the absence of colour (blacks, greys, and other dull colours)
also reinforce this effect, in addition the colour also supports the presentati0n of the
genre, Horror, by it interpreting the elements of death and gore, which means that
these elements will be included in the film. Another thing is how the newspaper in the
frame talks about ghosts and haunting, which presents the film having an antagonist
as a ghost or some sort of paranormal being.
10. Frame 9
• The old newspaper effect portrays how the film will be set in the past; the black and
white colours also reinforce this effect. The black and white colours also represent the
death and ore that will be included in the film, as they give a gloomy and dull effect to
the frame.
• The frame also shows a picture of a man and the credit of a man, which the audience
would assume that the name has some sort of connection with the picture or that this
person will be a character in the film and ‘PatrickWilson’ will play him.The name of the
actor has a white background and intercepts the picture, to portray the fact of how the
film wants the audience to notice the name before the picture.
11. In this piece of work, I have analysed the first 9 frames of the film opening of the
film ‘The Conjuring’ because I will be making my own Horror film opening and by
analysing another, top of the market, Horror film opening, this would help me as
it would let me know how to produce a successful film opening, how to layout the
opening credits in a way that would link to my film/genre and to give off the
appropriate impression to the audience, to let them know that my film is a
Slashed Horror film.
