Trailer Textual Analysis
IT (2017-Remake)
This frame is set at day hours, in a small street. A female character is shown to be putting up a poster of a missing Teenager.
Also how it is a poster of a missing teenager, it indicates that this might be set in an earlier year. Furthermore the car in the
background, is an older car that are only typically found in America, implying it is set in USA. This frame is centered around the
poster that makes the scene creepy as it is very unusually for a person to go missing and for someone to be putting up posters
of it.
This frame is part of a montage of frames from all timings over the film. Transitions are from one shot then blacking out and
then transitioning to the next shot, although some switch straight to the next shot.
The camerawork in this frame uses a majority of mid-distances shots with a few long and extreme long shots to show location
clearly, and to show what is happening from a much bigger picture. Furthermore it uses mostly eye-level shots, with a high-
angle shots and low-angle shots, and one birds eye view. During the poster scene it uses a pan shot to show what the lady is
putting up on the Telephone pole.
In this frame it uses a voice over of Dialogue of a character In the film from one of the scenes that we seem to see a brief view
to the conversation between the group of friends. It also uses graphics such as presenting the companies that produced it such
as Warner Bros. Pictures, and then the sub- group of New Line Cinema, these are short views and are presented 21-23 seconds
in.
In the second frame, the first thing we see is a creepy low angled shot of a boy, from the inside of a sewer drain. The young
boy is shown to be wearing a yellow coat, and using Three-point lighting. The character is looking for his homemade small
paper boat. The location is along a street, using the weather to set the mood, using a stormy rainy day, with dull coloring.
Furthermore, it uses montage editing but at one point uses a bit of continuity editing when the boy is chasing after the paper
boat. It shows a brief view of what is happening but not too much and that the kid has lost his boat, it adds more suspense
and creepiness of the moment.
In this frame it uses a low-angle shot with a medium-distance shot. They also use a close up and extreme low-angle. They also
use a high-angle looking down over the shoulder of the buy to emphasis the suspense and to enhance the shot making it
more creepy while looking into a pitch black sewer drain, while it zooms in closer to the drain.
There is a non-diegetic sound effect that is an eerie sound increasing in volume and pitch. Furthermore, the dialogue
continues from the last frame, also a loud creepy bang sound when the appearance of a clown appears, this is to work as a
low level jump scare. It uses one text graphic of who's novel it is from.
This frame is showing a creepy old run down house with boarded up windows, it is during day time. The lighting is natural
lighting, and it appears that one of the characters is in the shot wearing a wearied red t-shirt with a black backpack. The
character is shown to be standing still looking in the general direction of the house. The house grounds are made to look run
down with rusty falling apart fences, dead greenery growing on the house, mostly all plants are dead in the vicinity of the
house, while all the greenery away from the house to be healthy. This implies that the building is abandoned and not
maintained and the general look of the building creates an eerie feeling to the setting.
The editing is still in the style of a montage making it obvious to the viewer that it is followed by a shot that is completely
different. In this frame we see this and another of the house, while others showing some creepy things within the film. The
camerawork within this frame, it uses a low-angle, high angle and eye-level shot, with quick shot-to-shot transitions. The shots
are long-shots to focus on aspects with a medium shot to show a boy talking with others around him. This allows the viewer to
see all the things that are happening and also allows to see what is around the character, making a mental feeling for the
viewer of thinking 'don’t go in'.
It also at this point adds a non-diegetic sound of a clicking sound combined with a low tone humming sort of sound and out of
tune sounding strings that works well to build on the eerie aspect. The voiceover by one of the characters continues. The
dialogue is much more dominant over the back sounds of humming and clicking.
In this frame it shows multiple news articles of creepy and mysterious things that have happened. It indicates
that one of the boys from the group is in the library looking through old news articles. The scene is using
lighting to make it look as if it is natural daylight shining onto the news articles.
The frame is still using a montage technique to portray a view of what is happening to the audience, even
though these bits might be from the same section of the film they might have been placed next to each
other to cut out the long view of what actually happens, and giving us a quick brief view of what is happening.
The camerawork used in this shot appears to be a POV of the boy looking down at the newspapers, with a
straight transference to the next shot to show quickly what is being shown but only long enough to see the
main titles of the newspapers. These are medium-distance shots of the newspapers to show a large amount of
it but not to show the whole paper so that it can focus on one specific areas. Lastly how certain words are
positioned such as "Kills" that is positioned in the middle so it is instantly focused on the word kills. The
continuation of the voiceover and the humming + clicking sound continues. This is to continue to further the
suspense and eeriness of the trailer.
In this scene we are shown a drawing from that has a creature that stands out from all the other people in the
drawing, this picture is given an eerie aspect through the continuation of the non-diegetic sounds and voiceover
from one of the characters. The drawing is the first visual look of the monster and strengthens the idea of the
film being a horror. The frame continues to show a boy in what is presumed to be his house see the young kid
from the beginning run across the screen. This is considered scary as it is set with low-key lighting and the
characters reaction to the creepy young boy.
In this frame we get the first in person view of the monster, it is shown wearing
old fashion clothing, and is revealed while the girl turns around and the camera
tracks the girls movement to reveal the monster that then goes on to grab her
neck with a horrifying smile. The monster is dressed as a clown which is generally
considered a scary thing and is a big phobia for many people. The camera is at a
medium shot distance with a low-angle looking up at the characters to represent
the monster having power and to strengthen the creepiness of the character. The
sound keeps the same structure of having off tone, non-diegetic string
instrument sounds that add to the creepiness and also combined with a long
pitch bang sound, creates a sense of having to jump out of the chair in reaction
to what is being shown.
In this frame we are shown all the younger characters on their bikes together to
represent them working together to solve whatever is happening, the voiceover
has also changed to a different character that says "If we stick together... We
win". This implies that they are all together to get rid and defeat the monster,
but leaves the mystery for the audience of how they will do so. Furthermore the
character shown cycling at the front looks like he is being represented as a
leader as they are all in a sort of V shaped formation while they cycle.
This frame strengthens the idea that it is a horror as a girl is shown levitating in
the air while a torch is being shun on her. This is shown while a repeating tune is
played alongside of this to create the atmosphere , the tune started of quite but
has built itself up in volume; then a repeating drum sound is introduced to set a
speed for the trailer, for each drum sound that is played the scene of the picture
changes which shows multiple shots within the film and adds to the intensity of
the trailer.
Finally we are shown a room that one of the young boys has walked into, which is
full of clown dolls and clown mannequins, the lights flash but still use low-key
lighting to set the creepy atmosphere for the scene, a quite laugh is heard which
sounds like it is from a wind up doll, this intensifies the mood of the trailer as it
builds the creepiness of the scene which is already considered creepy as it is a
room full of clowns that all seem to be watching the boy. The frame starts off as a
long shot looking into the room and then goes to a mid-shot of the boy walking
into the room past the camera. Finally we see the clown monster running
towards the boy, we are shown this through the use of match-on-action showing
the boy backing off while the clown runs towards him.

There is a non-diegetic sound effect that is an eerie sound increasing in volume and pitch. Furthermore, the dialogue continues from the last frame, also a loud creepy bang sound when the appearance of a clown appears, this is to work as a low level jump scare. It uses one text graphic of who's novel it is from.
  • 4. This frame is showing a creepy old run down house with boarded up windows, it is during day time. The lighting is natural lighting, and it appears that one of the characters is in the shot wearing a wearied red t-shirt with a black backpack. The character is shown to be standing still looking in the general direction of the house. The house grounds are made to look run down with rusty falling apart fences, dead greenery growing on the house, mostly all plants are dead in the vicinity of the house, while all the greenery away from the house to be healthy. This implies that the building is abandoned and not maintained and the general look of the building creates an eerie feeling to the setting. The editing is still in the style of a montage making it obvious to the viewer that it is followed by a shot that is completely different. In this frame we see this and another of the house, while others showing some creepy things within the film. The camerawork within this frame, it uses a low-angle, high angle and eye-level shot, with quick shot-to-shot transitions. The shots are long-shots to focus on aspects with a medium shot to show a boy talking with others around him. This allows the viewer to see all the things that are happening and also allows to see what is around the character, making a mental feeling for the viewer of thinking 'don’t go in'. It also at this point adds a non-diegetic sound of a clicking sound combined with a low tone humming sort of sound and out of tune sounding strings that works well to build on the eerie aspect. The voiceover by one of the characters continues. The dialogue is much more dominant over the back sounds of humming and clicking.
  • 5. In this frame it shows multiple news articles of creepy and mysterious things that have happened. It indicates that one of the boys from the group is in the library looking through old news articles. The scene is using lighting to make it look as if it is natural daylight shining onto the news articles. The frame is still using a montage technique to portray a view of what is happening to the audience, even though these bits might be from the same section of the film they might have been placed next to each other to cut out the long view of what actually happens, and giving us a quick brief view of what is happening. The camerawork used in this shot appears to be a POV of the boy looking down at the newspapers, with a straight transference to the next shot to show quickly what is being shown but only long enough to see the main titles of the newspapers. These are medium-distance shots of the newspapers to show a large amount of it but not to show the whole paper so that it can focus on one specific areas. Lastly how certain words are positioned such as "Kills" that is positioned in the middle so it is instantly focused on the word kills. The continuation of the voiceover and the humming + clicking sound continues. This is to continue to further the suspense and eeriness of the trailer.
  • 6. In this scene we are shown a drawing from that has a creature that stands out from all the other people in the drawing, this picture is given an eerie aspect through the continuation of the non-diegetic sounds and voiceover from one of the characters. The drawing is the first visual look of the monster and strengthens the idea of the film being a horror. The frame continues to show a boy in what is presumed to be his house see the young kid from the beginning run across the screen. This is considered scary as it is set with low-key lighting and the characters reaction to the creepy young boy.
  • 7. In this frame we get the first in person view of the monster, it is shown wearing old fashion clothing, and is revealed while the girl turns around and the camera tracks the girls movement to reveal the monster that then goes on to grab her neck with a horrifying smile. The monster is dressed as a clown which is generally considered a scary thing and is a big phobia for many people. The camera is at a medium shot distance with a low-angle looking up at the characters to represent the monster having power and to strengthen the creepiness of the character. The sound keeps the same structure of having off tone, non-diegetic string instrument sounds that add to the creepiness and also combined with a long pitch bang sound, creates a sense of having to jump out of the chair in reaction to what is being shown.
  • 8. In this frame we are shown all the younger characters on their bikes together to represent them working together to solve whatever is happening, the voiceover has also changed to a different character that says "If we stick together... We win". This implies that they are all together to get rid and defeat the monster, but leaves the mystery for the audience of how they will do so. Furthermore the character shown cycling at the front looks like he is being represented as a leader as they are all in a sort of V shaped formation while they cycle.
  • 9. This frame strengthens the idea that it is a horror as a girl is shown levitating in the air while a torch is being shun on her. This is shown while a repeating tune is played alongside of this to create the atmosphere , the tune started of quite but has built itself up in volume; then a repeating drum sound is introduced to set a speed for the trailer, for each drum sound that is played the scene of the picture changes which shows multiple shots within the film and adds to the intensity of the trailer.
  • 10. Finally we are shown a room that one of the young boys has walked into, which is full of clown dolls and clown mannequins, the lights flash but still use low-key lighting to set the creepy atmosphere for the scene, a quite laugh is heard which sounds like it is from a wind up doll, this intensifies the mood of the trailer as it builds the creepiness of the scene which is already considered creepy as it is a room full of clowns that all seem to be watching the boy. The frame starts off as a long shot looking into the room and then goes to a mid-shot of the boy walking into the room past the camera. Finally we see the clown monster running towards the boy, we are shown this through the use of match-on-action showing the boy backing off while the clown runs towards him.
