Assignment 7: Conventions of
Film Posters
Gelsomina De Lucia
Patrycia Butrym
Leticia Silva
Tayla Humphris
• The main image is of
a vulnerable female
which reinforces
conventions of a
thriller/supernatural
film.
• The facial expression
creates narrative
enigma as the
audience would be
curious to know what
happens to the
character.
• The font and colour
of the title is sharp
against the black which
makes it stand out.
• The billing block is
at the bottom which
shows that they
wanted to attract
their audience mainly
by their narrative
enigmas.
• The green tint links to
how the film is recorded
from a handheld POV.
• The black is a colour
which is usually associated
with supernatural films as
everything evil happens at
night.
• Her costume is dirty
which alludes that she has
been through an ordeal
which is another narrative
enigma as to what has
happened to her.
• This is a form of
narrative enigma as it
gives background
information about the
film.
• The release date is
bigger than the billing
block so that the
target audience know
when the film is
coming out.
•Images connotates that
the paranormal creature is
part of the main character
or has a connection with it
because in this image they
are connected together.
•Layout is
separated and well
organised (neat
and clear)
•The main colours used
are very dark and dull
therefore this
symbolises death, evil,
and mystery so that
represents the genre.
•The words that are meant to
stand out are in a bigger font and
in italics they not not only stand
out to catch audience but also to
advertise their previous films.
•The colour of the words are in
white so its more visible because
its on a dark background.
• The middle of the title is fading
away so it suits the low key
background.
• Costumes portray the
social class of the character
and may give a hint of the
terrible things that
happened to them looking
at the state of their clothes.
• Companies - The fact that
they are at the bottom and
very small suggest that they
are less important but still
need to get credit.
• All of the names
are neat and small
so that everybody
can fit.
• Tag line is influded right
under the title so that its
more reconigsable
because audience will
read it right after reading
the title.
• The tagline also creates a
enigma and makes it more
mysterious to fit the
subhenre and colour.
The main image centred
in the middle shows a
weak character that has
no control.
The hand covers the
characters face which
suggests the person is no
longer who they were as
a human state.
This could show a
possession which is a
convention of the
supernatural.
Based on a true story is the only
narrative enigma the audience is
left with and it shows the extent
whether the main image is also
true and so therefore audiences
are intrigued to watch the film.
Title is crisp as the colour makes
it stand out.
Parts of the title is also
scratched out which alludes to
pain and links with the hand
Colour palette is plain but featured above.
has the connotations of
coldness and is dark in
some parts but never light.
The darkness creates
mystery of the unknown
and this is a convention in
our subgenre.
Billing block informs
audiences of actors and even
release dates; information
that is essential for audiences.
The release date is in red
which differentiates it from
the other text.
The main image is of
hand creeping out of
the wardrobe linking
to the movie as the
Boogeyman lives in
the wardrobe.
Also the colour pallet
is mainly blacks but
also has a tint of
blue to reveal what
is happening in the
poster imitating the
moonlight signifying
that the Boogeyman
only comes out at
night.
Also in the main
image there is
only a hand hiding
the killers identity
elevating enigma’s
about who the
killer is.
The font throughout
the title are all the
same size and it
writing in a hand
held hand writing.
It’s looks scratched linking to the genre and
the hand. Also giving a creepy affect. It’s in
white to juxtapose it from the dark.
All the information
about the actors,
distribution
companies and
owners ships are all
at the bottom
written in a tinted
blue to give a light
affect on it and not
take attention away.
The tagline saying
‘you though is was
just a story’ makes
the audience doubt
the norm making it
easier to scare them.
