PROPS/COSTUMES
This slideshow focuses on the potential and important props and costumes our group will use for
our thriller sequence opening. Each prop and costume will have valued importance and will be
vital towards the creation of our thriller sequence.
With each prop and costume we tried to relate them to our target audience, that being young
adults 15+ both males and females so they can engage with the text that it presented with them
and have a positive reading of this.
Outfits/Costumes
As we’re out in the woods, our main characters will wear wintery items to indicate its winter and cold out
there, things like gloves, scarfs and coats may be used to keep us warm.
Boots will also be worn by the three main characters to show that they have been walking for sometime and
branded shows would not be necessary as they may be damaged them whilst walking through the woods,
especially as the winter period sets in and rain and mud is to be expected out there.
Hoodies and jumpers will be worn between the three characters to keep them warm once outside in the
woods, this is to represent the winter period and how its cold outside, once we begin to film, the cold air
may allow our breaths to turn icy cold creating that mist once we breath creating a good effect whilst we
breathe and speak, this would be another successfully quality added to the footage.
Killer Costume
In all good thriller films, there are the typical conventions of the killer not being revealed until the very end
where there will be an awaited plot twist that surprises and shocks audiences views of this. Throughout a
thriller horror, murders are expected and victims are normally killed by someone concealing their identity,
this is to allow audiences to make assumptions on who they think the killer could be and to also keep them
watching right until the very end.
In our thriller opening only one murder will be seen in scenes, this is committed by a hooded figure dressed
in black so audiences cannot see their identities. We may also use unfocused background to even further
prevent the identity being established in the shot, and create the sense of the unknowing.
Important props needed for our thriller
sequence
The props mentioned here is the essential props that will be used throughout the thriller opening, the important props are as
followed:
IPhone 5 (White): This will be a major use for our groups thriller opening sequence. There are relevant key scenes where the IPhone
will be used, it will have bloody fingerprints on it, to establish fear and horror for audiences.
Canon Cameras: Will definitely need to be used as this is the intended purpose why the main characters went out into the woods in
the first place, the canon camera shows professional uses for it and will be able to capture the killer in the picture in clear detail.
Rucksacks: Will also be used an essential for our scenes, each character will have a backpack that they will carry into the
establishing shots and into the woods, the use of backpacks indicate that they have travelled some distance to get there and they
are isolated and alone in the woods with no means of escape if need be, giving an eerie feeling.
Fake Blood: Will be use to show to audiences that deaths and murders are to be expected in this film, gives an eerie feeling and
immediately intrigues and perks audiencnces attention. In our Focus group, some responses was that they would expect a death in
the opening but it needs to be bloody anf gruesome to keep them watching, so blood will be needed to make the death seem brutal
and horrific.
Theatrical Makeup
Will have a big importance towards our thriller film, our scenes are set in the woods where getting dirty and muddy is common,
especially throughout recent weather conditions where mud and puddles are seen regularly, to replicate this I'm going to bring
theatrical muds and wet muds to spray very lightly on visible areas to replicate the situation they face, so for example, the IPhone
will have visible traces on mud indicating its been on the ground for a while, also when Grace falls over in the mud, they’ll will be
visible sources on her arms and face to indicate the desperation to get away.
Fake Blood is also a vital essential in the production of our thriller opening, I shall be bringing along thick, thin, scab, dark and
aged bloods to replicate the wounds in the sequence, this makes the production seem realistic and adds fear for the audience as it
shows a gruesome film where murders can happen anywhere. In some scenes we can use blood would be the IPhone where Grace
discovers blood on it, I would use aged blood for this to simulate the time that has passed since the last murder.
The Ben Nye Death Palette is also another good resource to use, especially for the ending scenes where Grace is revealed to be on
the floor dead, the death palette will come in handy to replicate death colours people have when they pass away. The death
palette can be used to create pale colours on Graces faces to represent death to the audience.
Other essential props
Other potential props that our groups needs to take into consideration would be these presented on this slide. The
props here will be brought when we start filming, although the props here are not as essential or play a big a role
like the IPhone 5 does, but all will be crucially needed towards the creation of our groups thriller opening sequence,
this sets the realism of the final piece and allows audiences to engage from this.
So below the essential props shown are more or less linked into academics studies such as the books, equipment's
camera cases, showing that they are they for school work and studious projects, reflecting their youth and what are
target audience can relate to.
