The Politics of iGaming:
Our Panel:
• Susan Jensen – CNIGA
• Loretta Tuell – Greenberg Traurig, LLP
• Ewa Bakun – Head of Content, Clarion Events
• Jim Ryan – CEO Pala Interactive
• Gene Johnson – EVP, Victor Strategies
V-S recently completed white paper on the New Jersey iGaming market in cooperation with Alan Meister – Indian Gaming Report for iDEA trade association.
Chart shows the growth of regional gaming revenue in the Northeastern US since inception in 1978. Classic case of piling on and a market maturing
In the Northeast, according to the NYT, one half the population now lives within 25 miles of a casino. That used to be 10% in 2004. It will be well over two-thirds when MD & MA fully build out
In 2014, according to Flowing Data & Washington Post, one-third of US population lived within 25 miles of a casino.
Indian gaming revenue has tripled over the past 17 years but the major portion of that increase was in first half of the period. Tribal gaming is still growing but at a slower pace than previously.
The second macro trend is the generation of more total revenue from non-gaming sources with the rise of the integrated resort and gaming as one of many entertainment options.
Past 25 years the evolution of integrated resorts has reversed the proportions of gaming and non-gaming revenue.
NJ clearly best performing model.
NV = Poker only
DE = Lottery platform with legislated minimum revenue conditions
NJ population 9x NV or DE but revenue exponentially greater because of more successful business model.
Poker not performing as well in a small state population geo-fenced environment.
iGaming produced GGR of $196.9 million in 2016, and 188.1 million in net revenue. That was a 38% increase in net revenue over 2015 and industry net revenue has grown at a CAGR of 24.2% over the past three years.
iGaming produced $29.5 million in tax revenue for the state at a 15% tax rate on gross gaming revenue.
iGaming by the end of 2016 accounted for 9% of land-based gross gaming revenue.
NJ land-based gross gaming revenue has steadily declined since reaching peak of $5.2 billion in 2006. In 2016 total GGR rose YOY for first time in a decade.
All of the operators are in agreement that there is no substitution effect on their land based revenue. iGamer is a new demographic – not loyalty members or inactives
I repeat
2016 monthly revenue broken out by license holder – a healthy market with 5 strong competitors.
So what have we learned from New Jersey?
