This document discusses the history and current state of interracial relationships and biracial children in the United States. It covers the banning of interracial marriage through the 19th century, landmark legal cases such as Loving v. Virginia in 1967, challenges still faced by interracial couples and biracial individuals, and the results of a survey conducted by the author on attitudes toward interracial relationships.

5. Background Continued Southern states had the right to outlaw interracial marriages. Seventy percent of African- Americans descend from Black and White couplings. Famous people throughout history are of Black and White ancestry.

6. Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter went to Washington, D.C. to get married. They were arrested and convicted of violating Virginia’s antimiscegenation statute. The Supreme Court, in 1967, reversed the Lovings’ convictions. 1958- Loving vs. Virginia Case

13. My Project I designed a five question survey on interracial relationships and biracial children. I surveyed 200 students/faculty at Wayne Community College. I analyzed the responses and created pie charts to share my findings.

20. What I learned I learned how much thought and effort is necessary to formulate and conduct a survey. I now realize that not everyone accepts interracial relationships or their biracial children. I cannot pressure people to think the way I do.

21. How this Project has Benefited Me This project has helped me cope with comments that people make towards me and my African-American boyfriend. It has helped my mother understand me more. It has also helped me to better explain my position on interracial relationships to my mother.
