The price of electricity in Romania will double over the next 7-8 years, increasing by 40-60 euros per megawatt hour according to the president of the Association of Electricity Suppliers in Romania. This increase accounts for schemes promoting green certificates, carbon dioxide emissions permits, and bonuses for cogeneration energy production. A week prior, the head of Romania's renewable energy regulator estimated that renewable energy support schemes could increase electricity prices by 2.5 euros per megawatt hour or 5-7% in 2011, rising to a 33 euro or 73% price increase per megawatt hour by 2017.
