New Reality, New Rules:
Retail
April e-commerce sales were up almost 50% month over month in the U.S.
even as overall retail was down about 20%. Online grocery sales almost
doubled, and some categories like clothing dropped dramatically. Add to this
supply chain volatility, and you’ve got one of the most exciting -- and
challenging -- periods for any business.
The key: real-time data for real-time decisions.
Retail has seen the most change of
almost any category during COVID-19.
New Rule #1:
The baseline has shifted
Digital retail is seeing growth across the board. E-commerce is becoming
the new normal, especially because there may be a second and third
wave of COVID-19.

New Rule #2:
But the supply chain has been
compromised
You can’t lock down billions of people and assume that factories will run
themselves, raw materials will assembly themselves, and products will ship
themselves. And you can’t sell what you don’t have the ability to ship.
“The hit to the supply chain has been huge and we're still trying
to recover from that.”
New Rule #3:
Supply and demand are out of balance
Consumers can’t buy in-store, so they’re trying to buy online. But mobile
and web retailers only have so much access to inventory, and sometimes --
like in the fitness equipment vertical -- there’s just much more demand than
there is supply.
“There's a bit of embarrassment of
riches where there's so much demand…
but there's another side to that coin that
you're not prepared for…and that comes
from supply.”
“Some of our key partners have had so
much business that they've had to turn
off some of their marketing.”
Shopping data is spiky: first people want all the toilet paper they can get, then
groceries go way up. But we’re starting to see people buy more intentionally
now, voting with their dollars for products and brands they like.
New Rule #4:
Shopping habits have changed massively
“On one hand, people are buying much more. On the other hand…
they shop more consciously…they are looking for more local, organic products.”

New Rule #5:
This is only the beginning
Everyone is eager to get back to “normal” right now, even retail startups
that are doing very well. But “normal” might never come back. And if it does,
it might take years to return.

This pandemic is here to stay for a while.”

New Rule #6:
Data is king
Traditional retailers have prioritized in-store experiences. But in digital
environments, data about your customers is critical to serving them better.
“COVID has kind of exposed retai… retailers have to really start getting a single
source of truth from this data so that they can get better customer insights around
consumers’ wants, needs, and desires.”
Anything you do for a month becomes a new habit.
We’re now into our second and third months of life as not-normal…
and new retail habits are getting solidified.
New Rule #7:
Consumers are forming new habits
“We have lots of first-time customers…
they see a great assortment, it’s quite convenient…
those people might stay, and [digital retail] will increase dramatically.”

  • 2. April e-commerce sales were up almost 50% month over month in the U.S. even as overall retail was down about 20%. Online grocery sales almost doubled, and some categories like clothing dropped dramatically. Add to this supply chain volatility, and you’ve got one of the most exciting -- and challenging -- periods for any business. The key: real-time data for real-time decisions. Retail has seen the most change of almost any category during COVID-19.
  • 3. New Rule #1: The baseline has shifted Digital retail is seeing growth across the board. E-commerce is becoming the new normal, especially because there may be a second and third wave of COVID-19. “At MedLife we have seen almost 2X to 2.5X growth...the baseline has shifted now” Meera Iyer CMO, Medlife
  • 4. New Rule #2: But the supply chain has been compromised You can’t lock down billions of people and assume that factories will run themselves, raw materials will assembly themselves, and products will ship themselves. And you can’t sell what you don’t have the ability to ship. “The hit to the supply chain has been huge and we're still trying to recover from that.”
  • 5. New Rule #3: Supply and demand are out of balance Consumers can’t buy in-store, so they’re trying to buy online. But mobile and web retailers only have so much access to inventory, and sometimes -- like in the fitness equipment vertical -- there’s just much more demand than there is supply. “There's a bit of embarrassment of riches where there's so much demand… but there's another side to that coin that you're not prepared for…and that comes from supply.” “Some of our key partners have had so much business that they've had to turn off some of their marketing.”
  • 6. Shopping data is spiky: first people want all the toilet paper they can get, then groceries go way up. But we’re starting to see people buy more intentionally now, voting with their dollars for products and brands they like. New Rule #4: Shopping habits have changed massively “On one hand, people are buying much more.   • 7. New Rule #5: This is only the beginning Everyone is eager to get back to “normal” right now, even retail startups that are doing very well. But “normal” might never come back.   • 8. New Rule #6: Data is king Traditional retailers have prioritized in-store experiences. But in digital environments, data about your customers is critical to serving them better. “COVID has kind of exposed retai… retailers have to really start getting a single source of truth from this data so that they can get better customer insights around consumers’ wants, needs, and desires.”
  • 9. Anything you do for a month becomes a new habit. We’re now into our second and third months of life as not-normal… and new retail habits are getting solidified. New Rule #7: Consumers are forming new habits “We have lots of first-time customers… they see a great assortment, it’s quite convenient… those people might stay, and [digital retail] will increase dramatically.” Boris Manhart CEO, CodeCheck
