Hack the Hood introduces low-income youth of color to careers in technology through hands-on training programs. The programs teach youth web development and basic coding skills, which they apply by building websites for local organizations. This empowers the young people to see themselves in tech careers that they previously may not have considered possible. In the summer of 2015, Hack the Hood ran four boot camps in East Palo Alto, Richmond, and Oakland serving 100 youth ages 16-21.

Hack the Hood is a nonprofit program that teaches tech and web development skills to youth of color ages 16-21 through a 6-week bootcamp program. A week in italy
Daniel Mitev took a trip to Italy for a week, where he visited several cities and sites. He found the first flight difficult but subsequent flights easy. Upon arriving in Naples airport, he was greeted warmly. In Naples, he enjoyed the largest mall so much he didn't want to leave, and climbing Mount Vesuvius volcano with friends was his best experience. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. - 1. Hack the Hood: Digital Inclusion Meets Small Business October 2015
- 2. “I didn’t know that people like me could work in tech. And now, I could be a coder.” - --Norma Soto, Summer 2015 Hack the Hood program participant
- 3. Hack the Hood introduces low-income youth of color to careers in technology. We teach them web development & basic coding skills, which they practice by building web sites for local organizations. Our young people go from feeling like consumers of tech to producers of tech--and start to see futures they never imagined.
- 4. Say Something Bold And then say something smart Through hands-on training, we empower young people to see themselves in tech
- 5. Say Something Bold And then say something smart They learn tech & workplace skills that make tech careers feel possible
- 6. This summer, we ran 4 boot camps in East Palo Alto, Richmond, and Oakland. We served 100 youth ages 16-21
- 7. Since 2014, we’ve worked with more than 250 youth in the Bay area
- 8. Young people visited tech companies, explored careers, and built web sites for local organizations
- 9. Youth build small business web sites & develop client management, tech & coding skills
