Negative Effects Of Latin American Imperialism
Imperialism Around the World Imperialism is the effect that a powerful country or group of
countries has in changing or influencing the way people live; mostly poorer countries. For the
United States, imperialism mostly benefitted them but it also was negative for them in certain ways;
for Latin American countries like Brazil, Costa Rica, and Cuba imperialism was mostly negative for
them. Latin American countries viewed Americans influence in many different ways some
welcomed, some rejected, in general Americans liked imperialism because it mostly benefited them.
Imperialism is beneficial for the United States in a lot of ways like gaining political power,
economic power and the spread of technology. According to Brazilian history text "The ... Show

instituted a series of reforms that benefited Guatemalan workers. His successor, Jacobo Arbenz,
began agricultural reforms that benefited some 100,000 peasant families." Families were benefited
which helped Latin American countries (Costa Rica). According to Costa Rican history text
"President John F. Kennedy pushed for a political approach of economic aid to the region called
alliance for progress, which intended to improve the situation of the neediest groups." Latin
American countries gained a great alliance with the U.S. which really helped them because the U.S.

19th Century American Imperialism
European imperialism impacted the governments and societies of Africa and Asia by treating them
as inferiors, redrawing boundaries for themselves, and using them for resources to benefit
themselves.
European imperialism had both a positive and negative effect on the governments and societies of
Africa and Asia. For example, the governments and societies became more modernized and
industrialized. However, these societies lost more than they gained from European imperialism.
When European countries like Britain, France, Dutch, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Holland saw
Africa, they saw money and profit, not the people living in it. In Rudyard Kipling's, "The White
Man's Burden", it is stated "Take up the White Man's burden–Send forth the best ye ... Show more

China was self–contained, which meant that Britain needed trade more with China, than China
needed with Britain. Even though China had many resources, they did not want to modernize. The
only item Britain could trade with China, was opium. However, when the bad effects of getting
addicted to opium started to appear and China's economy started to go downhill, they wanted to stop
trade with Britain. This led to The Opium War, which led to the Treaty of Nanjing and unequal
treaties when China lost the war. According to "The Opium War and Foreign Encroachment", it
quotes, "The cost to China was enormous. The drug weakened a large percentage of the population
(some estimate that 10 percent of the population regularly used opium by the late nineteenth
century), and silver began to flow out of the country to pay for opium. Many of the economic
problems China faced later were either directly or indirectly traced to the opium trade (Lieblich, The
Opium War and Foreign Encroachment, 2015). This quote shows how the forced influence of
European nations negatively affected China, short term and long term. The political cartoon,
"Imperial powers divide China", show imperial powers dividing up China, where China is
attempting to stop them (Lieblich, Imperial powers divide China, 2015). Therefore, even though
there were benefits of European imperial influence, there were too

Imperialism is atrocious and should not be allowed. It is the death of native people and their culture.
It is selfish and goes against the ideal of humanity. Lastly, imperialism leads to even more conflict
and war. Thus, imperialism should not be used as a form of expansion. Imperialism is the demise of
native people and their culture. For example, American imperialism in Hawaii led to the
overthrowing of their native government. "On January 17, 1893, the conspirators announced the
overthrow of the queen's government. To avoid bloodshed, [she] yielded her sovereignty... The U.S
government refused to help her regain her throne... In 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state after a
plebiscite in which 90 percent of the islanders supported statehood" (Chamberlain). As seen here in
the annotation of the Hawaiian annexation document, once Queen Lydia Kamakaeha Liliuokalani
was ripped her throne the U.S was not willing to return it. Hawaii then suffered a cultural ... Show

He said, "Take up the White Man's burden–– No tawdry rule of kings, but toil of serf and sweeper..."
(Kipling, line 25–27). When a nation intrudes, or comes without an invitation, upon another country
the invading nation looks to overthrow the established government. Once that government is
overthrown a new one is set in place. Kipling was referring to the overthrown government in the
Philippines at this time. America then established a new government for the people, instead of being
ruled by kings, as they had before, "serf[s] and sweeper[s]" would take up this burden. A "serf"
refers to "a person in a condition of servitude, required to render services to a lord" or in other words
a "slave" ("serf"). Being forced into the position of a slave would be cause for conflict, and a
rebellion. All aspects of imperialism, big or small, spark conflict between the two sides. If conflict,
war, and bloodshed are nearly inevitable there must be a problem with imperialism in

American Imperialism
Although imperialism was certainly driven by the desire for economic gain, trade, and the demand
for new raw materials, it is a bit unfair to contend that imperialism was driven by only economic and
strategic interests; likewise, imperialism was greatly impacted by non–economic concepts such as
nationalism, civilization, and cultural diffusion. Nevertheless, Imperialism is defined as the policy of
expanding a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
Firstly, imperialism was heavily affected by imperialism, especially in its initial stages. Many
imperialist nations during the age of expiration sought to conquer islands before their competitors
could. For instance, countries such as Spain and Portugal competed to see ... Show more content on

European powers additionally clung to the racist belief that inferior races should be conquered in
order to "civilize" and educate them. Another instance of conquests based on ethnocentrism include
that of the United States and the Philippine islands. Imperial nations often believed that their cultural
values/beliefs were far more superior, and thus they believed that imperial conquest would bring
successful culture to these "inferior" people. In other words, the Europeans acted on their
ethnocentrism, the belief that one race/nation is superior to others. As for the US' invasion of the
Philippine islands, the Americans' actions are depicted in a poem named The White Man's Burden
that justifies imperialism as a noble enterprise of civilization, conceptually related to the American
Philosophy of Manifest Destiny. As for manifest destiny, it was a widely held belied in the United
States that its settlers were destined to expand across North America. This concept is illustrated
through 3 basic themes: 1) The special virtues of the American people and their institutions. 2) The
mission of the United States to redeem and remake the west in the image of agrarian America. This
is seen in the Spanish–American war, whereby the United States ended Spanish colonial rule in the
Americas and resulted in U.S. acquisition of territories in the Western Pacific and Latin America.
Following this conflict, the Americans took over Cuba and created a naval base, believing that Cuba

Imperialism is when stronger nations take over weaker nations. As a matter of fact, one example of
Imperialism is the Scramble for Africa, which happened during the 19th Century. The Scramble for
Africa is when European nations all wanted a piece of Africa which they were incredibly rich and
raw materials. For example, African countries had Gold, diamonds, coal, oil, and so much more.
There are many factors that play into the development of Imperialism, but which one played the
largest role. Was it nationalism, industrialization, militarism, or racism?
The American and the Europeans were imperialistic because of many reasons. One of the main
reasons they were imperialistic was due to money. Both the European and Americans were
industrialized, therefore if their nation did not have a raw material they had to go wherever the raw
material is located. They would go get new raw materials, so they would be able to sell to a new
market of people. Secondly, both the Americans and Europeans were both strong in nationalism,
which led to competition between countries which made the people of these countries go out and
look for areas that they can conquer. Racism was also a factor in Imperialism. Americans and the
Europeans and their white race felt they were the best in the world and thought what they stood for

Imperialism; the continuation
A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force, or rule
by an emperor. This is the definition of Imperialism when looked up. Many people see this word as
a direct continuation to a major concept in the 1880's and 90's, manifest destiny. A well known
historian named Daniel Walker Howe writes, "American imperialism did not represent an American
consensus; it provoked bitter dissent within the national polity ... Whigs saw America's moral
mission as one of democratic example rather than one of conquest". This quote shows how the two
relate to each other. In 1898 the US became an imperial power, this year was an important one.
The late 1890's and more specifically 1898 brought on expansion. After the craze of manifest
destiny that view of expansion was still in the eyes and hearts of most Americans. As the 1890's
came along many American's look back on the age of manifest destiny and held great gratitude
within them. Internally the US had found peace and civility at the end of the civil war in 1865, and
before then the United States were not involved in a foreign war since 1848. The united states had
now earned a new nickname as the smoke began to clear from wars, The economic giant. Along

African American Imperialism
Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through either diplomacy or
military force. Africa and India were both victims of imperialism in the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries. Europeans (mostly the British) conquered most of Africa and India which
effected both countries in many different ways. Some of the things that happened during this time
like the industrialization of the countries and some new more modern ways of life had a positive
effect on the people. While this did happen, not all that happened was positive. Imperialism had an
overall negative effect on the citizenship rights and identity of Africans and Indians because of
economic and material poverty, loss of identity and traditions, and ... Show more content on

African people could no longer live how they wanted, they had to follow the rules and laws of the
Europeans. The natives couldn't work were the wanted, say what they wanted, or practice their own
religion. They were told what to do, how to do it, and how much money they would make at work.
The resolution of the All–African People's Conference condemns imperialism and colonialism
because of this statement, "...fundamental human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of association,
freedom of movement, freedom of worship, freedom to live a full and abundant life . . . are denied to
Africans through the activities of Imperialists". Africans were denied almost everything that people
should be able to do and have, they were hardly even treated as humans. Their working and living
conditions were something that nobody should ever have to do deal with, and they didn't have any
rights so they couldn't do anything about it. Not only did the Africans and Indians lose their basic
human rights, they also lost the right to govern their own country themselves. Indian people have
been governing themselves for hundreds of years and were capable of doing it for many more. When
the British Come to India, they suddenly don't have that power anymore. Dadabhai Naoroji once

Remember when the pilgrims came to the North American continent in search of a new and better
life? Well, the pilgrims may be seen as an early example of imperialist. Just like in the early days of
America, there were many good and bad things that imperialism brought, in which affected the
country's living conditions. Imperialism means to take over, and recently, the United states of
America is trying to imperialize, this is known as American Imperialism. In fact, American
imperialism splits into five different categories, one of them is military, which relates to the armed
forces that protect and fight for the freedoms of the country. Then comes the acquirement of

When two completely foreign groups discover one another, a discrepancy of beliefs is inevitable. In
the cases of European imperialism, these discrepancies go far beyond disagreement and towards the
erasure of an entire history of people. In the works written by Joseph Conrad, Sherman Alexie, H.T.
Johnson, and Binyavanga Wainaina readers clearly understand that a cultural clash results in one
culture overtaking the other.
In Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, the force of European imperialism is apparent and
overwhelming. Marlow describes in detail a scene of Congolese people forced to carry baskets of
dirt by the Europeans in the area saying, "I could see every rib, the joints of their limbs were like

Cullen's poem, Heritage was written during the Harlem Renaissance so this was a time of self–
identification for African Americans. With their forefathers being forced out of their homeland just a
few generations before them, these were people who needed to write their own history. This is the

Essay On African American Imperialism
Industrial imperialism (a product of the industrial revolution) ,began in roughly 1880. During this
time, people (predominantly europeans) began searching for land to colonize. Imperialism could
also be tied to racism, with europeans believing that they were above everyone, and that they
therefore, needed more land. These racist beliefs were often connected to social darwinism. This
belief could be summed up with "Survival of the Fittest", with the europeans believing that they
were the "fittest". Europeans also would believe that they had a different bone structure than people
of color; more specifically, they would illustrate cartoons that compared african americans to
themselves, giving the other a smaller brain. One of the key countries that was affected by
imperialism would be India, as illustrated in the film "Gandhi", british troops would take over poor
countries. One scene that illustrates this point would be when Gandhi is traveling through his own
country and gets stopped by officers while getting off of the train, these men threaten to arrest him,
and Gandhi uses his knowledge of the law to get out of it. In the next scene, Gandhi is visiting a
poor village. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Japan willingly changed their ways, China was not as enthusiastic, and instead formed some
of their own rebellions to force out the foreigners imperialistic ways. Many chinese rebellions could
be described as "God led" due to the spirituality of them. Two examples of spiritual rebellions would
be the Tai–Ping, and the Boxer Rebellion. The Taiping Rebellion was led by XiQuAn, who believed
that God was being brought to China. While the latter was formed in the 1800s as a secret society. In
the Boxer Rebellion, the Chinese would try to summon spiritual power to rid them of imperialism.
Another relevant part of imperialism was the Berlin Conference, where world leaders traveled up to

American Imperialism In The 1800's
In the late 19th to early 20th century, American imperialism was on the rise. The United States was
expanding outside of the continent from Puerto Rico to the Philippines. While the conquering of
nations was important, the ideologies behind imperialism played an even greater role. Intellectuals
from sociologists to Navy admirals created arguments to justify America's global expansion. Little
did they know that remnants of their philosophies would still be in use over a century later. One very
influential ideology in American imperialism was created by Alfred T. Mahan. Mahan was a
historian, geostrategist, and US Navy admiral. By the late 1800s, he had become the Navy's leading
advocate and become very influential in politics with his close ... Show more content on

First, America's main justification for the expansion came from social Darwinism. In the social
hierarchy, the United States is at the top tier, or the "fittest", while countries like the Philippines and
Puerto Rico would be on the bottom. During this time period, America's economy was struggling
and heading toward a depression, but this is where the "survival of the fittest" comes into play. The
strong United States did what it had to, like conquer small, weak Pacific countries, to benefit and
maintain survival. Also, in this case of social Darwinism, Anglo–Saxonism goes hand in hand.
American's belief that they were a "superior" race, and they were obligated to spread American
ideals, was used a justification of imperialism. Frederick Jackson Turner's ideology was also used as
justification. Turner stated, "American energy will continually demand a wider field for its
exercise." This, in fact, became a true statement. With America's goal of expanding from coast to
coast, a new frontier was needed, and what better place than Asia and the Pacific

Colonialism: American Imperialism In The United States
American Imperialism
The primary objective of any empire is to expand its powers and influence beyond its borders.
Imperialism has been around for many centuries and many nations have sought to dominate over
weaker nations as long ago as ancient Mesopotamia. Their motivations are usually very similar
which were to obtain natural resources, overthrow their enemies, search for wealth, and gain power.
American imperialism was driven by beliefs from social Darwinism and manifest destiny and that
people of the world needed to be dominated by the Anglo–Saxon race in which they perceived was
the most evolved one. During the late 1800's, the economy of the United States began growing very

Africans had a very savage look. For example, the were very skinny, muscular, and dark skinned.
They also spoke a different language and were mostly naked. They were very different looking than
the Europeans and were looked down on as inferior for these same reasons. Also the natives culture
was destroyed by the Europeans in many situations. One example of this in history is when the
British put the Natives on display as if they were in a zoo for their people to look and laugh at. Also,

In order for nations to avoid the effects of imperialism, they were forced to band together and take
matters into their own hands. According to a Quote from Haile Selassie, silence and non resistance
makes it possible for others to take over. Ethiopia was one of very few countries to avoid
Imperialism and only did so by defying the invadement of European rule. Ethiopia remained
independent and suffered no social retaliation. The countries that were not directly involved still
aided in the financial gain of the European Powers. As seen in Smithsonian Institution sponsored
African expedition for Theodore Roosevelt 1909–1910, other countries supported hunting
expeditions in Africa. These expeditions brought wealth and introduced new ideologies. It can be
assumed that many countries around the world followed soon with hunting expeditions. This further
feed the idea that socially, outside powers were above the native Africans. The outside community
used the issues of imperialism in Africa in order to gain profit. In Images of Colonial Africa, the
pictures show the westernization of social civilizations while the letters show the profit being made
of the deliverance of the photos. There were numerous accounts of missionaries from outside
countries that gained profit off of the economic and social downfall of some African nations. These
impacts were beneficial and practical for foreign nations to take advantage of economically and

this definition included Britain, Japan, and later on the United States, all industrializing countries
with a rich history of conquest and a unique take on imperialism. All of these countries have on

For much of its history Japan was a "closed country" and only opened up to very few people, those
being the Dutch and on occasion their Chinese neighbors (Hayes 2012a). It was not until 1853 that
Japan would have its first visitors, the United States (Hayes 2012b). Commodore Matthew Perry
would force open Japan's ports and have them agree to "unfair treaties" (Hayes 2012c). This led to
the overthrow of the last shogunate's rule in 1868 and the eventual emergence of Japan's imperial
empire. In 1868, the Meiji Restoration was well under way. During this time period the Japanese
were looking to western powers for industrializing and reorganizing the way their government and
even society operates (Hayes 2012d). Japan took it upon itself to emulate the western powers in
order to discover its role in the international sphere (Hayes 2012e). As the country expanded and
western influence grew Japan looked to expand their empire and saw Korea. Until the 1880s Japan
began to assert policy against Korea, this led to conflict with China until 1895 in the Sino Japanese

Imperialism is the domination over an undeveloped and/or weak nation socially, politically and

There are many ways the U.S. benefited from imperialism. But one of the main reason that really

Imperialism wasn't necessary, in the view point of what it did to the places that were taken over by
America. American imperialism can be described as ironic when you think about it; it had the same
principal as England just switched around to where America had control over the people. American
viewpoints were pushed onto the different groups of people that were taken over, and it caused
rivalry amongst the different countries. American imperialism forever changed the way people
viewed themselves and others. You can say that imperialism was hypocritical. While America was

of a business competing for the most wealth. Someone might say that imperialism was not a bad

their understandings of national identity, saw this overseas expansion in conflicting ways. In the late

Many Anti–Imperialists feared that democracy would be replaced with militarism due to
imperialism. William Graham Sumner, an esteemed sociology professor at Yale, believed that
imperialism directly contradicted the founding American belief that all men are created equal: "the
Americans have been committed from the outset to the doctrine that all men are equal. We have
elevated it into an absolute doctrine as a part of the theory of our social and political fabric"
(Document 2). Sumner was greatly concerned about the fact the imperialism would eventually
transform America, a country of freedom, into a militaristic country like Spain. Perhaps more
importantly, he believed that imperialism would make America no better than the British, who had
once controlled us, and would lead the country into an era of constant war and economic strain.
Soon after the end of the Spanish–American War and the acquisition of the Philippines, many
Americans became worried about the implications of the imperialist mindset. Jane Addams, an

markets and military advantages. Moral obligations such as civilizing "backward" nations, and
moral obligations such as spreading Christianity, also led Americans to seek lands to conquer.
In 1867, America acquired its first non–continental territory; Alaska. Many American politicians
showed interest in gaining Alaska for economic reasons. The territory's resources were said to be
plentiful by American traders and whalers. Alaska was settled by Russian ... Show more content on

The Hawaiian Islands were first bought to the attention of the world when British explorer James
Cook voyaged there in 1778. Missionaries and traders began visiting the islands regularly in 1820,
and many eventually settled there. As the number of Americans in Hawaii increased, American
investors gained more and more control of the sugar industry. By the time Kalakaua became king in
1874, Americans had taken control a major role in Hawaii's economy. Kalakaua hated the fact that
Americans had power over his country's government and vowed to put native Hawaiians back into
power. The Hawaiian League, a secret society of plantation owners, traders, and American business
leaders, was soon formed to overthrow the king. The League also wanted to create Hawaii into a
democracy controlled by United States. They forced king Kalakaua to sign a constitution at gunpoint
in July of 1887, which became known as the bayonet constitution. This constitution gave Pearl
Harbor and political control over Hawaii to the US. More conflicts arose in US– Hawaiian relations
when the McKinley Tariff was passed by Congress in 1890. This raised taxes on foreign sugar, and
caused an economic depression across Hawaii. American sugar growers knew that the only way to
protect their business from the tariff was to be annexed to the United States. After King Kalakaua
died, Liliuokalani, his sister, became queen. Rebel sugar planters wanted to overthrow her and
become a territory of the US. The American minister to Hawaii, John L. Stevens, ordered four
boatloads of marines to go ashore and help the rebel sugar planters without Presidential approval.
The Marines surrounded the royal palace and directed guns and cannon at it. Queen Liliuokalani
was forced to surrender on January 17, 1893. President Grover Cleveland was troubled by the events
in Hawaii, and felt that Americans had acted dishonorably there. He proposed to reinstate Queen

American Imperialism In The Late 1800s
Imperialism is a policy of government that gives the power to expand country's area or gaining
dependent territories using any of the methods either through war or through politics. Factors such
as industrialization, rapid economic growth, over production of agriculture on the decade of the
1890s helped America on the way of developed country that led leaders of America to follow an
imperial policy. At the civil war period, development of industries had slowed down. After the end
of the civil war, Americans and leaders came together with new idea that America turned to the rapid
industrial growth which helped to achieve optimum economic growth. Changes occur not only on
the industrial sector but also on agriculture and social status. Use of new technology and machine
help to increase the agriculture production. Similarly, "settlement of the American West by a class of
new farmers translated into greater yields in crop production". These changes were beneficial to the
American people and America but they opened many more challenges. One of the most challenge
was over production and low consumption. Industrial and agricultural production were too much
than public demand. There was going to be great fluctuation between supply and demand. At this

American Imperialism In The 1840's
The United States was considered an imperialistic nation in the 1840's for a variety of reasons.
During the 1840's, the United States saw their fastest territorial growth, their military and navy were
growing in both size and reputation, and the United States was beginning to become a serious player
in the geopolitical world of empires. These aspects all contributed to the U.S. being viewed as an
imperialistic nation.
For one to fully understand why the U.S. was an imperialistic nation, they must first understand the
definition of imperialism. Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence
through colonization, use of military force, or other means. During the decade of the 1840's, the U.S

acquisition of California gave ports on the west coast, thus enabling trade to begin between the U.S.
and the Far East and allowed the U.S. to begin to project their dominance in the Pacific. In the later
part of the 1840's the U.S. turned their attention to the Caribbean. The U.S. again demonstrated their
new found imperialism when they offered Spain 100 million dollars to buy Cuba and then stated if
they refused, it would be taken by force, though these threats were never executed, it is prime
examples of how the United States asserted itself as a serious player in world

Imperialism is the policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or
military force. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, many countries would invade or enter other
countries and take over. They would take over by force and rule harshly in order to get whatever it is

better their own economy by spreading it into the country they took over. The imperialistic America

Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power through diplomacy or military force. Britain,
France, Germany, Japan and Russia were some of the imperial powers in the late 1800's. The United
States began to gain more global power due to the Westward expansion. The U.S. built up a
significant economic and political power and began to challenge the countries in Europe. The main
goal of the U.S. was to easily access China to sell surplus goods. There were several islands that the
United States needed to gain access to first to be able to reach China easily. In 1897, President
Mckinley decided to annex these islands, which led to Hawaii becoming a colony of the United
States in 1898. The U.S. also sought out for Cuba and many Americans hoped that it could be a new

Divided Imperialism In The American Civil War
Imperialism is necessary for cultures to progress in the grand scheme of things, but with the
advancement of one culture there is always another that will suffer. There are also different
outcomes for different types of Imperialism. What I mean by this is that Imperialism will work, but
not always as planned. Simply put, Imperialism is the political process of extending the rule or
authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, whether inhabited or not. So with that in
mind, there are two questions needing to be asked about Imperial situations: What group was doing
the dominat–ing and what group was being domina–ted? And how did the civilization turn out in the
end? To better understand the various outcomes of imperialism, I should ... Show more content on

British failed their imperialism of the New World and in the long run, both the British and American

and slavery, the domination of African–Americans, was abolished. However the Nation was still
sore with racism. Unlike in the Revolution, the Dominaters still had to live among the (previously)

African groups are being split and and mixed together. Some countries who were colonizing wanted
to bring their traditions and cultures to the African people. For example, when the French came to
Africa they wanted to have direct control of their part of Africa. The French wanted Africans to be
like the French. Over time with the French under control Africans would slowly adopt some French
traditions. Another example is some Africans lived in smaller tribes and had a tribe leader. When the
French came the tribes didn't want to be controlled by the French because that takes away meaning
and purpose to have a tribe leader. The French were taking away the leader's power. It was like a
tradition to have one person lead the tribe. With all kinds of different countries racing to colonize
Africa, Africans were flooded with different cultures, languages, and traditions. Life as the Africans
knew it was getting ripped apart and put back together with a bunch of extra pieces (traditions,
languages, etc.) within it. It is hard for us Americans to understand what it was like for Africans
during this time because the United States of America is filled with different languages, cultural,
traditions, and much more. We have never really experienced new people coming and taking over us
and our beliefs like Africa. We will never fully be able to understand because America doesn't have
one main race or ethnic group. There's two things that any person or nation likes is money or profit,
and that is what they had in mind. Africa isn't as industrialized or modern has Europe. Africa also
doesn't have any factories. Without factories they can't build guns, or any kind of weapon. The
African's only weapon that they had at this time was spears. Spears are no match for any kind of
gun. When Africans tried to rebel or go to war with the countries it never worked because they did
not have the right kind or weapons or supplies. Another reason why France and Russia sold arms to

The colossal military nearness proceeded with two Pacific wars, Korea and Vietnam, and also the

Why did the U.S. become involved in imperialism? Imperialism, the policy of expanding a country's
power through either diplomatic or military ways, was first seen in mid 17th century. The Monroe
Doctrine looked southward into and beyond the Caribbean. This idea of expansion continued
through the 17th century covering a wide area from Argentina (1852–1853) to China (1859) to
Nicaragua (1894). With this precious experience in the 1890's when the US the profit system took a

Since the beginning of humankind, Africa had always been a difficult continent to colonize. The
amount of natural barriers, the rainforest, the climate, and the dry and wet seasons are why Africa
wasn't able to be colonized until the 19th century. The Europeans were first able to colonize Africa
in the late 1880's but, that success didn't come without many challenges they faced. They had issues
with medicine, politics and their economy was failing. In the 1500's, European colonialists tried to
invade Africa in the 1500's, before being fought off by unified African forces. The Songhai empire
and the Mali empire were responsible for the defense against the Europeans. However about 300

There were very few technological advancements in Africa that didn't benefit all demographics of
Africa. Only richer people, usually of European descent were able to access western technology.
None of the famous inventions like the telegraph, even medicine, weren't brought to Africa until
decades after the rest of world received the technology. Furthermore, the Europeans didn't want to
help them upgrade their medicine because it was easier to politically and socially control them. A
reason for this is, "Starting from a base of total ignorance, the imperial resources to disease went
through many stages." Also, "The journey from hap–hazard experimentation to full–blown public
health systems was a long and painful one that cost millions of people their lives." Furthermore,
Florence Nightingale proved statistically that her sanitized hospital regimes, which insisted on
cleanliness, exercise, and edible food and fresh water were far more effective than the laissez–faire
approach of dealing with sickness. The recollection of these experiences points out a huge flaw in
Africa. There was no real attempt at treating or solving medical problems in Africa at a low
affordable cost. Not to mention, the British were capable of developing vaccines for African natives,
they just didn't because that was their method of keeping African slaves under their ownership.
Nowadays, the life expectancy of African natives can be from forty five, to seventy years, all
because the British had no interest in helping the locals during imperialism. On the other hand, the
cure for malaria was invented in 1832, it was called Quinine, it suppressed pain and helped with
other medical concerns as well. However, they never distributed it to everyone, only British

Essay About American Imperialism
American Imperialism, if discounting the conquering of Native populations and forced assimilation
with Indian Wars, began with the Mexican – American War in 1846 which led to the annexation of
several hundred thousand square miles of Mexican lands. While the causes of the Mexican –
American War was mainly about economics and manifest destiny, race still played a major role in
the war's end in that while 525,000 sq. miles of new land was acquired, once again it was not for all
Americans. White Americans were the only ones who were encouraged to move west in order to
move west in order to populate the newly acquired lands with Americans. The native Indian
populations living in these newly acquired lands were met with the same treatment as those who
were already apart of the United States, they had no rights, blacks faced an even bigger threat of
having slavery spread to the new territories which would've meant even longer bondage for them

the American Empire leads to the end of the Spanish Empire. The United States wanted to build up
the countries so that markets would open up and purchase American goods and to improve the
American economy.
Do you think the United States is currently an imperialist country? Why or why not? No I do not
think the United States is an imperialist Country. We do not try or even want to take over any other
countries. We want to buy their products instead, and sell our products to them. Also when the
United States attacks another country it is out of defense, we only support wars that are in self–
defense. During WWI we took no possessions as our own, and prevented others from doing this.
During WWII we helped to rebuild Japan and Germany instead of taking control, and returned full
power to the Filipino Government. In the Korea and Vietnam War we came to the aide of both
countries. During the Afghanistan war we fought and are still assisting then Government until we

American Imperialism According to Charley Reese, " the truth is that neither British nor American
imperialism was or is idealistic. It has always been driven by economic or strategic interests." The
United States got involved in imperialism because we felt that taking over land would give us new
sources of raw materials. It would also open up new markets to sell food. Secondly, the United
States thought they were superior to other countries. They wanted to spread their beliefs to other
countries to "help" them; to teach them about their democracy and christianity. Lastly, they craved
military power. By taking over other countries America was enhancing our Navy by building bases

because gaining these small countries like these through the cultural leadership that Mati insinuates

reason this policy was adopted was because the U.S. industrial economy was growing so fast that
they were producing more goods than they could consume. This abundance of goods forced the U.S.
to look for new markets to sell their goods. Another reason this was adopted was because the
Americans were discontent with the way Spaniards were treating the Cubans. This led to the
Spanish American War, which really opened the doors for American Imperialism. The U.S. forces
defeated the Spanish forces which caused Spain

American Imperialism In South Africa
Imperialism was viewed differently by many countries. Some believed that imperialism was an idea
of philanthropy and idealism; others believed that it was characterized by political self–interest and
the association of capitalist greed. The United States and British South America imperial systems
were similar and different in their perspective of the imperial regime. The United States and British
South Africa greatly incorporated the imperial system in their nations; however, the United States
brought imperialism to the Pacific Coast whereas South Africa was being adapted by the
imperialism from Great Britain. Furthermore, both ways of imperialism led to conflicts and
disagreements. The imperialism in the United States can be coined as the ... Show more content on

In 1848, the United States purchased Alaska, acquired the naval base in Samoa in 1878, and
annexed Hawaii through their interventional affairs (Roberts p102–103). After the war, Guam had
gone to the United States as a peace between the two nations, while Puerto Rico became U.S.
territory. Through the territories the United States obtained in the Pacific and the Caribbean, they
decided to build an isthmian canal that connected the two regions. However, conflicts with
Colombia delayed the construction of the canal to 1807, after the conflicts were resolved the canal
finally opened in 1814 (Roberts p.105). The canal helped move warships from the Atlantic to the
Pacific and was known as an excellent naval strategy. In addition, the canal changed the foreign
policy and became an integral part of the American naval thinking. On the other hand, in South
Africa the war continued as many people died from both sides. In 1902, the British statesmanship
recovered sufficiently as to make a generous settlement in the field and the diplomatic elimination of
the republics (Roberts p.108). Specifically, the peace treaty was generous towards Afrikaners, as it
excluded Black and colored South Africans from political rights. After the post–war, the South
African Union agreed on terms of equality for the Dutch and English languages and provided the
government an elected assembly to be formed through the electoral regulations in each province
(Roberts p.109). Lastly, South Africa benefited from its own farming exports with the beginning of
the diamond industry, followed by the Rand gold discoveries. Furthermore, the development of
these industries and discoveries made South Africa an important producer of minerals and
stimulated the world

Negative Effects Of Latin American Imperialism

  • 1. Negative Effects Of Latin American Imperialism Imperialism Around the World Imperialism is the effect that a powerful country or group of countries has in changing or influencing the way people live; mostly poorer countries. For the United States, imperialism mostly benefitted them but it also was negative for them in certain ways; for Latin American countries like Brazil, Costa Rica, and Cuba imperialism was mostly negative for them. Latin American countries viewed Americans influence in many different ways some welcomed, some rejected, in general Americans liked imperialism because it mostly benefited them. Imperialism is beneficial for the United States in a lot of ways like gaining political power, economic power and the spread of technology. According to Brazilian history text "The ... According to Costa Rican history text "President John F. Kennedy pushed for a political approach of economic aid to the region called alliance for progress, which intended to improve the situation of the neediest groups." • 3. 19th Century American Imperialism European imperialism impacted the governments and societies of Africa and Asia by treating them as inferiors, redrawing boundaries for themselves, and using them for resources to benefit themselves. European imperialism had both a positive and negative effect on the governments and societies of Africa and Asia. For example, the governments and societies became more modernized and industrialized. However, these societies lost more than they gained from European imperialism. When European countries like Britain, France, Dutch, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Holland saw Africa, they saw money and profit, not the people living in it. In Rudyard Kipling's, "The White Man's Burden", it is stated "Take up the White Man's burden–Send forth the best ye ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... China was self–contained, which meant that Britain needed trade more with China, than China needed with Britain. Even though China had many resources, they did not want to modernize. The only item Britain could trade with China, was opium. However, when the bad effects of getting addicted to opium started to appear and China's economy started to go downhill, they wanted to stop trade with Britain. This led to The Opium War, which led to the Treaty of Nanjing and unequal treaties when China lost the war. According to "The Opium War and Foreign Encroachment", it quotes, "The cost to China was enormous. The drug weakened a large percentage of the population (some estimate that 10 percent of the population regularly used opium by the late nineteenth century), and silver began to flow out of the country to pay for opium. Many of the economic problems China faced later were either directly or indirectly traced to the opium trade (Lieblich, The Opium War and Foreign Encroachment, 2015). This quote shows how the forced influence of European nations negatively affected China, short term and long term. The political cartoon, "Imperial powers divide China", show imperial powers dividing up China, where China is attempting to stop them (Lieblich, Imperial powers divide China, 2015). • 5. Examples Of American Imperialism Imperialism is atrocious and should not be allowed. It is the death of native people and their culture. It is selfish and goes against the ideal of humanity. Lastly, imperialism leads to even more conflict and war. Thus, imperialism should not be used as a form of expansion. Imperialism is the demise of native people and their culture. For example, American imperialism in Hawaii led to the overthrowing of their native government. "On January 17, 1893, the conspirators announced the overthrow of the queen's government. To avoid bloodshed, [she] yielded her sovereignty... The U.S government refused to help her regain her throne... In 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state after a plebiscite in which 90 percent of the islanders supported statehood" (Chamberlain). As seen here in the annotation of the Hawaiian annexation document, once Queen Lydia Kamakaeha Liliuokalani was ripped her throne the U.S was not willing to return it. Hawaii then suffered a cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He said, "Take up the White Man's burden–– No tawdry rule of kings, but toil of serf and sweeper..." (Kipling, line 25–27). When a nation intrudes, or comes without an invitation, upon another country the invading nation looks to overthrow the established government. Once that government is overthrown a new one is set in place. Kipling was referring to the overthrown government in the Philippines at this time. America then established a new government for the people, instead of being ruled by kings, as they had before, "serf[s] and sweeper[s]" would take up this burden. A "serf" refers to "a person in a condition of servitude, required to render services to a lord" or in other words a "slave" ("serf"). Being forced into the position of a slave would be cause for conflict, and a rebellion. All aspects of imperialism, big or small, spark conflict between the two sides. If conflict, war, and bloodshed are nearly inevitable there must be a problem with imperialism in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. American Imperialism Although imperialism was certainly driven by the desire for economic gain, trade, and the demand for new raw materials, it is a bit unfair to contend that imperialism was driven by only economic and strategic interests; likewise, imperialism was greatly impacted by non–economic concepts such as nationalism, civilization, and cultural diffusion. Nevertheless, Imperialism is defined as the policy of expanding a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Firstly, imperialism was heavily affected by imperialism, especially in its initial stages. Many imperialist nations during the age of expiration sought to conquer islands before their competitors could. For instance, countries such as Spain and Portugal competed to see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... European powers additionally clung to the racist belief that inferior races should be conquered in order to "civilize" and educate them. Another instance of conquests based on ethnocentrism include that of the United States and the Philippine islands. Imperial nations often believed that their cultural values/beliefs were far more superior, and thus they believed that imperial conquest would bring successful culture to these "inferior" people. In other words, the Europeans acted on their ethnocentrism, the belief that one race/nation is superior to others. As for the US' invasion of the Philippine islands, the Americans' actions are depicted in a poem named The White Man's Burden that justifies imperialism as a noble enterprise of civilization, conceptually related to the American Philosophy of Manifest Destiny. As for manifest destiny, it was a widely held belied in the United States that its settlers were destined to expand across North America. This concept is illustrated through 3 basic themes: 1) The special virtues of the American people and their institutions. 2) The mission of the United States to redeem and remake the west in the image of agrarian America. This is seen in the Spanish–American war, whereby the United States ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and resulted in U.S. acquisition of territories in the Western Pacific and Latin America. Following this conflict, the Americans took over Cuba and created a naval base, believing that Cuba "owed" them for freeing them from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. American Imperialism Dbq Imperialism is when stronger nations take over weaker nations. As a matter of fact, one example of Imperialism is the Scramble for Africa, which happened during the 19th Century. The Scramble for Africa is when European nations all wanted a piece of Africa which they were incredibly rich and raw materials. For example, African countries had Gold, diamonds, coal, oil, and so much more. There are many factors that play into the development of Imperialism, but which one played the largest role. Was it nationalism, industrialization, militarism, or racism? The American and the Europeans were imperialistic because of many reasons. One of the main reasons they were imperialistic was due to money. Both the European and Americans were industrialized, therefore if their nation did not have a raw material they had to go wherever the raw material is located. They would go get new raw materials, so they would be able to sell to a new market of people. Secondly, both the Americans and Europeans were both strong in nationalism, which led to competition between countries which made the people of these countries go out and look for areas that they can conquer. Racism was also a factor in Imperialism. Americans and the Europeans and their white race felt they were the best in the world and thought what they stood for was the best, so they wanted ... • 11. American Imperialism In The 1890's Imperialism; the continuation A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force, or rule by an emperor. This is the definition of Imperialism when looked up. Many people see this word as a direct continuation to a major concept in the 1880's and 90's, manifest destiny. A well known historian named Daniel Walker Howe writes, "American imperialism did not represent an American consensus; it provoked bitter dissent within the national polity ... Whigs saw America's moral mission as one of democratic example rather than one of conquest". This quote shows how the two relate to each other. In 1898 the US became an imperial power, this year was an important one. The late 1890's and more specifically 1898 brought on expansion. After the craze of manifest destiny that view of expansion was still in the eyes and hearts of most Americans. As the 1890's came along many American's look back on the age of manifest destiny and held great gratitude within them. Internally the US had found peace and civility at the end of the civil war in 1865, and before then the United States were not involved in a foreign war since 1848. • 13. African American Imperialism Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through either diplomacy or military force. Africa and India were both victims of imperialism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Europeans (mostly the British) conquered most of Africa and India which effected both countries in many different ways. Some of the things that happened during this time like the industrialization of the countries and some new more modern ways of life had a positive effect on the people. While this did happen, not all that happened was positive. The resolution of the All–African People's Conference condemns imperialism and colonialism because of this statement, "...fundamental human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of movement, freedom of worship, freedom to live a full and abundant life . . . are denied to Africans through the activities of Imperialists". Africans were denied almost everything that people should be able to do and have, they were hardly even treated as humans. Their working and living conditions were something that nobody should ever have to do deal with, and they didn't have any rights so they couldn't do anything about it. Not only did the Africans and Indians lose their basic human rights, they also lost the right to govern their own country themselves. Indian people have been governing themselves for hundreds of years and were capable of doing it for many more. When the British Come to India, they suddenly don't have that power anymore. In the cases of European imperialism, these discrepancies go far beyond disagreement and towards the erasure of an entire history of people. In the works written by Joseph Conrad, Sherman Alexie, H.T. Johnson, and Binyavanga Wainaina readers clearly understand that a cultural clash results in one culture overtaking the other. In Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, the force of European imperialism is apparent and overwhelming. During this time, people (predominantly europeans) began searching for land to colonize. Imperialism could also be tied to racism, with europeans believing that they were above everyone, and that they therefore, needed more land. These racist beliefs were often connected to social darwinism. This belief could be summed up with "Survival of the Fittest", with the europeans believing that they were the "fittest". Europeans also would believe that they had a different bone structure than people of color; more specifically, they would illustrate cartoons that compared african americans to themselves, giving the other a smaller brain. One of the key countries that was affected by imperialism would be India, as illustrated in the film "Gandhi", british troops would take over poor countries. One scene that illustrates this point would be when Gandhi is traveling through his own country and gets stopped by officers while getting off of the train, these men threaten to arrest him, and Gandhi uses his knowledge of the law to get out of it. The United States was expanding outside of the continent from Puerto Rico to the Philippines. While the conquering of nations was important, the ideologies behind imperialism played an even greater role. Intellectuals from sociologists to Navy admirals created arguments to justify America's global expansion. Little did they know that remnants of their philosophies would still be in use over a century later. One very influential ideology in American imperialism was created by Alfred T. Mahan. American's belief that they were a "superior" race, and they were obligated to spread American ideals, was used a justification of imperialism. Frederick Jackson Turner's ideology was also used as justification. Turner stated, "American energy will continually demand a wider field for its exercise." This, in fact, became a true statement. Commodore Matthew Perry would force open Japan's ports and have them agree to "unfair treaties" (Hayes 2012c). Many citizens, whose views were greatly influenced by their understandings of national identity, saw this overseas expansion in conflicting ways. We have elevated it into an absolute doctrine as a part of the theory of our social and political fabric" (Document 2). Sumner was greatly concerned about the fact the imperialism would eventually transform America, a country of freedom, into a militaristic country like Spain. Perhaps more importantly, he believed that imperialism would make America no better than the British, who had once controlled us, and would lead the country into an era of constant war and economic strain. Soon after the end of the Spanish–American War and the acquisition of the Philippines, many Americans became worried about the implications of the imperialist mindset. By the time Kalakaua became king in 1874, Americans had taken control a major role in Hawaii's economy. Kalakaua hated the fact that Americans had power over his country's government and vowed to put native Hawaiians back into power. The Hawaiian League, a secret society of plantation owners, traders, and American business leaders, was soon formed to overthrow the king. The League also wanted to create Hawaii into a democracy controlled by United States. They forced king Kalakaua to sign a constitution at gunpoint in July of 1887, which became known as the bayonet constitution. This constitution gave Pearl Harbor and political control over Hawaii to the US. More conflicts arose in US– Hawaiian relations when the McKinley Tariff was passed by Congress in 1890. This raised taxes on foreign sugar, and caused an economic depression across Hawaii. American sugar growers knew that the only way to protect their business from the tariff was to be annexed to the United States. After King Kalakaua died, Liliuokalani, his sister, became queen. Rebel sugar planters wanted to overthrow her and become a territory of the US. The American minister to Hawaii, John L. Divided Imperialism In The American Civil War Imperialism is necessary for cultures to progress in the grand scheme of things, but with the advancement of one culture there is always another that will suffer. There are also different outcomes for different types of Imperialism. What I mean by this is that Imperialism will work, but not always as planned. Simply put, Imperialism is the political process of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, whether inhabited or not. So with that in mind, there are two questions needing to be asked about Imperial situations: What group was doing the dominat–ing and what group was being domina–ted? And how did the civilization turn out in the end? To better understand the various outcomes of imperialism, I should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In each example it's apparent that the only kind of positive Imperialism is failed imperialism. The British failed their imperialism of the New World and in the long run, both the British and American nations thrived on their own. The Civil War was also a case of failed imperialism. The South lost and slavery, the domination of African–Americans, was abolished. However the Nation was still sore with racism. Unlike in the Revolution, the Dominaters still had to live among the (previously) dominated and their conflict was far from resolved. In America's westward expansion, their "Successful" Imperialism resulted in the imminent death of a culture. It's almost like a scale. The British abandoned the pursuit of the New World, the Southerns had to get used to their "New World", and the Native Americans were either rejected or pummeled by the Colonists'g "New ... The Boers were Dutch and come over to Africa in 1652. The Boers and the British did not agree with British policies including land and slaves. The Boers had no where to go but north. Which later became known as the Great Trek. When they were heading north they got in fierce battles with the Zulu and many other African groups as they were attempting to take land. The Boers didn't want outsiders coming in when gold was discovered. The Boers did t want any of the people coming to seeks fortune to gain any political rights. African groups are being split and and mixed together. Some countries who were colonizing wanted to bring their traditions and cultures to the African people. For example, when the French came to Africa they wanted to have direct control of their part of Africa. The French wanted Africans to be like the French. Over time with the French under control Africans would slowly adopt some French traditions. Another example is some Africans lived in smaller tribes and had a tribe leader. When the French came the tribes didn't want to be controlled by the French because that takes away meaning and purpose to have a tribe leader. The French were taking away the leader's power. It was like a tradition to have one person lead the tribe. With all kinds of different countries racing to colonize Africa, Africans were flooded with different cultures, languages, and traditions. Life as the Africans knew it was getting ripped apart and put back together with a bunch of extra pieces (traditions, languages, etc.) within it. It is hard for us Americans to understand what it was like for Africans during this time because the United States of America is filled with different languages, cultural, traditions, and much more. We have never really experienced new people coming and taking over us and our beliefs like Africa. We will never fully be able to understand because America doesn't have one main race or ethnic group. There's two things that any person or nation likes is money or profit, and that is what they had in mind. Africa isn't as industrialized or modern has Europe. Africa also doesn't have any factories. Without factories they can't build guns, or any kind of weapon. The African's only weapon that they had at this time was spears. Spears are no match for any kind of gun. When Africans tried to rebel or go to war with the countries it never worked because they did not have the right kind or weapons or supplies. Slowly but surely America understood that helping out the Filipinos was a grave mistake, to show that they should not fear the Philippine armed force but the people themselves. Rise Of American Imperialism Following the Renaissance, the Age of Exploration was a time when countries would send explorers to other countries so they could gain allies and natural resources. This however turned into something more demanding than a peaceful partnership. Gradually, the Age of Exploration turned into a rush to create as many colonies as possible. An act known today as colonialism, which is a form of imperialism where one country takes control of the government, economy, and natural resources of another civilization. They say that the government can be chosen by the people. Another argument would that now America would be involved with Asian conflicts. Also, if a president or leader acts tyrannical to other countries, then who could say that the president or leader would act like that in our home country. It also went against Christian beliefs, it forced people to follow and go along. An argument for American imperialism would be increased natural resources and expand the markets. • 63. American Imperialism Research Paper Why did the U.S. become involved in imperialism? Imperialism, the policy of expanding a country's power through either diplomatic or military ways, was first seen in mid 17th century. The Monroe Doctrine looked southward into and beyond the Caribbean. This idea of expansion continued through the 17th century covering a wide area from Argentina (1852–1853) to China (1859) to Nicaragua (1894). With this precious experience in the 1890's when the US the profit system took a toll due to the depression of 1893, it began to look overseas to expand its market. • 65. The Rise Of American Imperialism Since the beginning of humankind, Africa had always been a difficult continent to colonize. The amount of natural barriers, the rainforest, the climate, and the dry and wet seasons are why Africa wasn't able to be colonized until the 19th century. The Europeans were first able to colonize Africa in the late 1880's but, that success didn't come without many challenges they faced. They had issues with medicine, politics and their economy was failing. In the 1500's, European colonialists tried to invade Africa in the 1500's, before being fought off by unified African forces. The Songhai empire and the Mali empire were responsible for the defense against the Europeans. However about 300 years later, the cure to malaria was found in 1832. This drug ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were very few technological advancements in Africa that didn't benefit all demographics of Africa. Only richer people, usually of European descent were able to access western technology. None of the famous inventions like the telegraph, even medicine, weren't brought to Africa until decades after the rest of world received the technology. Furthermore, the Europeans didn't want to help them upgrade their medicine because it was easier to politically and socially control them. A reason for this is, "Starting from a base of total ignorance, the imperial resources to disease went through many stages." Also, "The journey from hap–hazard experimentation to full–blown public health systems was a long and painful one that cost millions of people their lives." Furthermore, Florence Nightingale proved statistically that her sanitized hospital regimes, which insisted on cleanliness, exercise, and edible food and fresh water were far more effective than the laissez–faire approach of dealing with sickness. The recollection of these experiences points out a huge flaw in Africa. There was no real attempt at treating or solving medical problems in Africa at a low affordable cost. Not to mention, the British were capable of developing vaccines for African natives, they just didn't because that was their method of keeping African slaves under their ownership. Nowadays, the life expectancy of African natives can be from forty five, to seventy years, all because the British had no interest in helping the locals during imperialism. On the other hand, the cure for malaria was invented in 1832, it was called Quinine, it suppressed pain and helped with other medical concerns as well. • 67. Essay About American Imperialism American Imperialism, if discounting the conquering of Native populations and forced assimilation with Indian Wars, began with the Mexican – American War in 1846 which led to the annexation of several hundred thousand square miles of Mexican lands. While the causes of the Mexican – American War was mainly about economics and manifest destiny, race still played a major role in the war's end in that while 525,000 sq. miles of new land was acquired, once again it was not for all Americans. White Americans were the only ones who were encouraged to move west in order to move west in order to populate the newly acquired lands with Americans. The native Indian populations living in these newly acquired lands were met with the same treatment as those who were already apart of the United States, they had no rights, blacks faced an even bigger threat of having slavery spread to the new territories which would've meant even longer bondage for them and the few free blacks who were around were not afforded the luxury of leaving their homes to move westward to buy ... The United States wanted to build up the countries so that markets would open up and purchase American goods and to improve the American economy. Do you think the United States is currently an imperialist country? Why or why not? No I do not think the United States is an imperialist Country. We do not try or even want to take over any other countries. We want to buy their products instead, and sell our products to them. Also when the United States attacks another country it is out of defense, we only support wars that are in self– defense. During WWI we took no possessions as our own, and prevented others from doing this. During WWII we helped to rebuild Japan and Germany instead of taking control, and returned full power to the Filipino Government. In the Korea and Vietnam War we came to the aide of both countries. During the Afghanistan war we fought and are still assisting then Government until we are no longer needed.

It has always been driven by economic or strategic interests." The United States got involved in imperialism because we felt that taking over land would give us new sources of raw materials. It would also open up new markets to sell food. Secondly, the United States thought they were superior to other countries. They wanted to spread their beliefs to other countries to "help" them; to teach them about their democracy and christianity. Lastly, they craved military power. Marti is insinuating Cuba does not like their Spanish leaders who have enslaved the Cubans and that America could be so much better and do so much more for Cuba. This matters because gaining these small countries like these through the cultural leadership that Mati insinuates would lead to the economic benefits that American imperialists also wanted. Albert J. Beveridge ("The March of the Flag", 1898) says, "Have we no mission to perform, no duty to discharge to our fellow–man? Has God endowed us with gifts beyond our deserts and marked us as the people of His [favor]?" Beveridge here insinuates that Americans are God's chosen ones. By being the chosen one ones of someone that powerful (in that time period) they were saying that they believed that they were better than everyone else in fact they were rather saying we are perfect while everyone else does what they do wrong. "The battle of the Pacific highlighted the need for naval bases and coaling stations. This lead to the annex of Hawaii, Pearl Harbor naval base being built and after the Spanish–American War we received Guam and Puerto Rico. During this period, we gained territories, resources and our military was expanding forces in areas of the world where we had not gone in force before. There were several major events that took place during this time that led up to this change. The main reason this policy was adopted was because the U.S. industrial economy was growing so fast that they were producing more goods than they could consume. This abundance of goods forced the U.S. to look for new markets to sell their goods. Another reason this was adopted was because the Americans were discontent with the way Spaniards were treating the Cubans. After the war, Guam had gone to the United States as a peace between the two nations, while Puerto Rico became U.S. territory. Through the territories the United States obtained in the Pacific and the Caribbean, they decided to build an isthmian canal that connected the two regions. However, conflicts with Colombia delayed the construction of the canal to 1807, after the conflicts were resolved the canal finally opened in 1814 (Roberts p.105). The canal helped move warships from the Atlantic to the Pacific and was known as an excellent naval strategy. In addition, the canal changed the foreign policy and became an integral part of the American naval thinking. On the other hand, in South Africa the war continued as many people died from both sides. In 1902, the British statesmanship recovered sufficiently as to make a generous settlement in the field and the diplomatic elimination of the republics (Roberts p.108). Specifically, the peace treaty was generous towards Afrikaners, as it excluded Black and colored South Africans from political rights. After the post–war, the South African Union agreed on terms of equality for the Dutch and English languages and provided the government an elected assembly to be formed through the electoral regulations in each province (Roberts p.109).
