The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) was established in 1983 under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to conserve fish genetic resources in India. NBFGR operates divisions focused on molecular biology, fish conservation, and fish health, and maintains facilities including an aquarium, research centers, and a library. Key activities of NBFGR include collection and preservation of fish species, research on fish genetics and health, and developing techniques such as DNA barcoding of Indian fish species.

 The NBFGR has its headquarters at Uttar Pradesh.
 The Council is the apex body for coordinating,
guiding and managing research and education in
fisheries sciences in the entire country.

4. The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR)
was established in December 1983 in a rented premises
at Allahabad under the guidance of Indian Council of
Agricultural Research (ICAR) to undertake research
related to the conservation of fish germplasm resources
of the country.
The Bureau’s permanent infrastructure was developed at
Canal Ring Road, Telibagh, Lucknow, U.P in 1999
containing an administrative block, laboratories, farm
and residential complex covering an area of 52 acres.

6. The Bureau has a well developed air-conditioned library
with more than 7000 books.
The library subscribes 27 foreign and 68 Indian journals.

7. The NBFGR is an ISO 9001: 2008 certified
organization and has been awarded with the Sardar
Patel Best Institute Award for the year 2011 by the
ICAR, New Delhi.
The Institute has also established ‘Ganga Aquarium’,
one of the largest and wonderful public aquariums in
the country which is serving as a great source of
spreading public awareness and education about fish
diversity of the country.

10. The Peninsular and Marine Fish Genetic Resources
(PMFGR) Centre of the NBFGR is housed in the premises
of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute
(CMFRI), Kochi, Kerala.

11. An Aquaculture Research & Training Unit (ARTU) of the Bureau is functioning at
Chinhat, Lucknow.
This unit is carrying out human resource development activities including practical
training programmes and fishery advisory services pertaining to fish culture,
induced breeding, quality fish seed production, hatchery management and nursery
pond management, etc.

12. The Fisheries Domain under the
Scheme Centre for Agricultural
Bioinformatics has been involved
in collection, compilation,
cataloguing and interpretation of
biological data viz. genome,
mitogenome, transcriptome,
proteome, genes, molecular
markers etc. of fishes and other
aquatic organisms.

13.  Design and development of databases of Fisheries
domain.
 Collection, compilation, verification, quality assurance
and maintenance of genomic information from various
sources of domain.
 Identification of issues on bioinformatics and related
fields in the domain.
 Provide support to the associated institutions in fisheries
bioinformatics.

extraction of DNA from fish scales.
 Generated DNA barcodes over 500 Indian fish species.
 Generated chromosome profiles of over 70 fish species.
 Physical mapping of rRNA genes in17 fish species using FISH.
 Established Live Gene Bank at Lucknow and Guwahati.
 Monoclonal antibodies produced against serum
immunoglobulins of Labeo rohita and Channa striatus.
 Cell lines developed from tropical fishes such as
Etroplus suratensis, Cyprinus carpio and Labeo
rohita.
