the government in 19 June 1913 in order to regulate the
acquisition of land.
• The native land act was later renamed the bantu land act
and later the black land act.
6.
7. WHY THE NATIVE LAND ACT WAS
IMPLEMENTED?
• The native land act was implemented so as to
divide South Africa legally into white and black
territories.
• To provide white people with more land to use for
farming and also make black labor readily available
to the farms and mines.
8. ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL IMPACTS OF
THE NATIVE LAND ACT
• Loss of property, Africans lost their land.
• African people were not allowed to purchase land from the non natives
who were European settlers who owned 93% of the South African land.
• African people could no longer farm to feed their families.
• African people were forced to work in mines and white owned farms and
they had to pay huge amounts of taxes.
• As migrant workers they had to leave their families behind.
9. IMPACTS OF THE NATIVE LAND ACT
• By becoming migrant workers, Africans moved from a life of agricultural land
exploration and economic independence to dependence on the white colonists.
• In the process of land dispossession, Africans lost their source of income and
food security.
• Furthermore they lost their dignity and their economic independence.
• But they did not only loose their source of income infact they were made poor.
10. IMPACTS OF THE NATIVE LAND ACT
• Laboring for whites meant that Africans became dependent and controlled by
their employers
• Therefore employers gained control over the lives of African people
• At the expense of Africans the mines became profitable and the economy grew.

native land act of 1913?
