When Napoleon became consul in 1799, France was at war with several European powers but signed a treaty in 1802. However, peace did not last and war broke out again in 1803. From 1805-1807, Napoleon's Grand Army defeated Austria, Prussia and Russia, allowing Napoleon to establish a new European order and a French Empire from 1807-1812 consisting of a core French Empire, dependent states ruled by Napoleon's relatives, and allied states he had defeated. Napoleon sought to spread principles of the French Revolution like equality before the law.
