Guerilla Warfare Guerilla Warfare- a type of warfare that takes place in hostile territory by uneven forces Vietnamese used Guerilla warfare from the examples set by the Chinese
Vietcong Vietnamese Communists, part of the National Liberation Front (NLF) Their main office was in South Vietnam near the Cambodian border For ammunition and equipment, they depended on the Ho Chi Minh trail Vietcong practiced guerilla warfare
Vietnam and Guerilla Warfare For instructions for soldiers, dozens of hidden centers had Vietnamese leaders for weapon and radio training. Part of the political instruction to give a purpose for war.
Weaponry/Tactics Troops used Chinese versions of a Russian AK- 47 submachine gun, and other types of machine guns (heavy, medium, light) Homemade booby traps and mines Vietnamese soldiers would retrieve the bomb duds from the 20,000 tons of American explosions– they created new weapons off of that “ Punji traps”- sharp spikes hidden in pits They used surface-to-air missiles (SAM)
Tunnels To help protect remote areas, Vietnamese soldiers built underground tunnel systems Each villager in NLF dug three feet a day Biggest tunnels in Iron Triangle and Cu Chi District- about 200 miles of tunnels Used for store rooms for weapons and rice Included hospitals, kitchens, sleeping chambers Connected with other tunnels for communication
