As Startups and tech
companies encroach on big
businesses turf, innovation
is more key than ever for
their success –
LIVITY
However the big companies
are tackling innovation in the
wrong way –
It’s key that the big companies understand the best
route to the most innovative solutions if they’re not
going to have their Kodak moment.
LIVITY
They’re focusing on
expertise alone, but
expertise as a single
entity is dead –
Expertise in isolation leads to bias’, you take too much
direction from things that have come before, meaning
you limit your opportunities, you don’t look at
problems with a fresh pair of eyes.
LIVITY
Innovation requires naivety,
naivety means looking at
problems from a fresh
perspective –
Naivety is the opposite of expertise, you have no limits, you’re completely fresh
to the problem and therefore don’t understand what is possible.
This means that you push the envelope when it comes to innovation, but it also
means you need an experienced pair of hands to guide that limitless creativity.
LIVITY
Like the Zen proverb
says - In the beginner’s
mind there are many
possibilities. In the
experts there are few –
LIVITY
There are many ways to
bring a naive state of
mind into your
organisation or project –
LIVITY

This is something we have built our whole process on at Livity. We are a youth-led
creative network, meaning all work we do involves young people.
We pair young people who lack experience but are brimming with creativity, with
our team of experts who have years of experience across strategy and creative.
We believe that this is what allows us to get to different and innovative solutions
that overcomes our clients challenges and creates effective, award-winning work.
LIVITY
An expert from a
different industry –
An alternative route is to bring in an expert from a different field. This means they
bring with them an understanding of the world of work, and of industry, but bring a
fresh perspective on your industry's problems.
Imagine a space where companies could put staff out on loan to different
industries - driving innovation across the board whilst giving staff new
experiences at the same time.
LIVITY
Teaching yourself to
take on a beginner’s
mind –
It is also possible to train yourself in the beginner’s mind. Training yourself to see
the world from new angles and not allowing the challenges that you’ve faced before
to cloud your vision going forward.
LIVITY
It’s key that they remain
outliers though –
A common mistake is to think bringing in people with a fresh perspective and
embedding them in a team over a long period of time is the solution. However it
has been proven that if a team spends a lot of time together they also start to
think like each other, or it will be in their interest to support other team members
even if they disagree. This phenomenon is called ‘groupthink’.
It is key that outliers remain outliers or they will no longer challenge the thinking
of their team.

  • 1. Naivety in innovation: Time to shake sh*t up – LIVITY A dual talk by Alan Bryant and Ty Stanton-Jones Strategist and Creative at Livity.
  • 2. LIVITY As Startups and tech companies encroach on big businesses turf, innovation is more key than ever for their success –
  • 3. LIVITY However the big companies are tackling innovation in the wrong way – It’s key that the big companies understand the best route to the most innovative solutions if they’re not going to have their Kodak moment.
  • 4. LIVITY They’re focusing on expertise alone, but expertise as a single entity is dead – Expertise in isolation leads to bias’, you take too much direction from things that have come before, meaning you limit your opportunities, you don’t look at problems with a fresh pair of eyes.
  • 5. LIVITY Innovation requires naivety, naivety means looking at problems from a fresh perspective – Naivety is the opposite of expertise, you have no limits, you’re completely fresh to the problem and therefore don’t understand what is possible. This means that you push the envelope when it comes to innovation, but it also means you need an experienced pair of hands to guide that limitless creativity.
  • 6. LIVITY Like the Zen proverb says - In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities. In the experts there are few –
  • 7. LIVITY There are many ways to bring a naive state of mind into your organisation or project –
  • 8. LIVITY Co-Create with young people – This is something we have built our whole process on at Livity. We are a youth-led creative network, meaning all work we do involves young people. We pair young people who lack experience but are brimming with creativity, with our team of experts who have years of experience across strategy and creative. We believe that this is what allows us to get to different and innovative solutions that overcomes our clients challenges and creates effective, award-winning work.
  • 9. LIVITY An expert from a different industry – An alternative route is to bring in an expert from a different field. This means they bring with them an understanding of the world of work, and of industry, but bring a fresh perspective on your industry's problems. Imagine a space where companies could put staff out on loan to different industries - driving innovation across the board whilst giving staff new experiences at the same time.
  • 10. LIVITY Teaching yourself to take on a beginner’s mind – It is also possible to train yourself in the beginner’s mind. Training yourself to see the world from new angles and not allowing the challenges that you’ve faced before to cloud your vision going forward.
  • 11. LIVITY It’s key that they remain outliers though – A common mistake is to think bringing in people with a fresh perspective and embedding them in a team over a long period of time is the solution. However it has been proven that if a team spends a lot of time together they also start to think like each other, or it will be in their interest to support other team members even if they disagree. This phenomenon is called ‘groupthink’. It is key that outliers remain outliers or they will no longer challenge the thinking of their team.
