- During the course of planning this meeting I kept coming back to a central theme? What do people want to see here? What do they want to get out of it? Why do people attend? Is it certain speakers? Certain topics? The Contacts? We are all here because in one way or another the issue of prescription abuse impacts our lives. Each of us see a different flavor, a different aspect of how that abuse manifests itself in a way creates that our role or function. To me it is our differences across this central theme that we can learn from here at NADDI. So along those lines I have prepared a brief presentation about what brings me to NADDI and what I have learned so far about what brings some of our members to NADDI.
- Before I begin the presentation I want to provide a brief warning/background on the soundtrack. First the warning. I was unable to locate the clean version of this song so it does contain one curse word in one line. If that makes you uncomfortable please feel free to step out. I decided to use the song anyway though because of what the song represents. The first time I heard it what struck me most was that you could easily imagine the same song with the slang terms of illicit drugs in the places where prescription drugs are mentioned. It is a cultural glorification of drug abuse that highlights legal drugs. When I did a little more research on the song I was further intrigued. The album the song is on was released independently. It sold over 100,000 copies without any promotion. The “artist” behind this song was signed by a group called Three 6 Mafia. For those of you unfamiliar with rap trivia…Three 6 Mafia are also the artists behind a song called Sippin on Some Syrup, a song that discusses a the “purple drank” (a club drink based on promethazine with codeine syrup.) In the early 90’s there was a whole “chopped and screwed” scene in Houston that evolved around remixing rap songs and the “the purple drank” played a big part in it. The album the song you are about to here was also “chopped and screwed” and then re-released. So what is the point? Even today the cultural influence that this music/club scene had translates into a diversion issue around promethazine that is more prevalent in Texas than anywhere else…but it didn’t just stay in Texas. It spread well beyond the south. So in an indirect way…this song…and others like it are part of what bring me to NADDI. When the presentation is finished Nancy/Angela are going to be passing around a bowl of names. Each name in the bowl represents one of you.
