The Harvard Management Company and Inflation-Protected...
The Harvard Management Company and Inflation Protected Bonds 1(a) Regular Treasury bonds
are purchased at face value in the beginning or an adjusted price prior maturity. And in every
period, normally annul or semiannual, investor will receive a coupon as an interest and at the
maturity a principal plus coupon. (b) Coupon and principal of the Regular Treasury bonds are
fixed, therefore if the inflation rate increases in the forecasting future, investor will receive the
same amount of coupon and principal with less real value and purchasing power. (c)TIPS are
simultaneously related to change of inflation rate which means the principal and coupon will adjust

3 We can make a hedge portfolio by taking a long position in the inflation indexed TIPS and a
short position in the regular bond with the same duration. We know that there are two variables
affecting the bonds real interest rate and actual inflation rate. When nominal interest rate
changes, long and short positions of bonds in portfolio offset each other. When inflation rate
changes, TIPS would change its price and leave regular bond in short position exposed to
inflation risk. 4(a) Harvard s Policy Portfolio is a portfolio within a group of asset classes
including different instruments. It can be used as a benchmark to evaluate the performance of
investment strategies. (b) To determine Policy Portfolio by using mean variance analysis.
Given a variable number of expected portfolio return, we would choose our strategy from a set
of minimum variance portfolio basing on our tolerance for risk. (c) Because one of HMS s goal
is to preserving the real value of endowment. Nominal return may reflect much lower real value
of endowment because of inflation. So only the real return can make sure that Harvard does not
lose money. (d)From exhibit4, domestic equity and foreign equity have a correlation of 0.5. It
means there is a relatively big part of portfolios overlaps, which means equity and foreign equity
may affect each other due to exposure to risks. 5Yes, TIPS should be considered as an additional

It is completely virgin, it produces overwhelming clarity of focus, it has heroic strength and
brilliance. It exposes colours in their original prelapsarian state, as though straight from the
imagination of God in His youngest days, when He still believed that all was good. The dark
green of the pines is unfathomably and retreatingly deep, the ocean viewed from the top of a cliff
is platonic in its presentation of azure and turquoise, emerald, viridian, and lapis lazuli. . . Once the

Feminist Perspective In Hamlet
Throughout history, women have endured patriarchy and oppression. The re envisioning of
literature in a feminist canon has reinvigorated lost works of women and has made clear themes of
sexual difference and importance of gender within classical texts. In William Shakespeare s Hamlet,
the feminist perspective reveals several elements of these societal differences that were so relevant
in Elizabethan times. Although the play suggests an array of interpretations, the feminist
perspective emphasizes the strength and significance of the feminine elements in this controversial
piece of literature, mainly through the deterioration of Ophelia s psyche, the patriarchal
relationships that admonish the component of power concerning gender, and the significant rhetoric
that differentiates these roles. Within the feminist canon, the portrayal of the character Ophelia and
her mental state in the play have resulted in a vast amount of discussion concerning how male
dominated society, and its pressures, have affected women. Ophelia s insanity is not merely the
inner workings of her mind derailing but the composite result of the repression underlying within
the atmosphere of Elsinore. Specifically, in Act IV, Scene v where she is perceived to have gone
insane conveys a multitude of ideas of what is the meaning of this outburst and its impact on gender
perspectives. According to Elaine Showalter, Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the
Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism, there

A Single Under Cabinet Light
A single under cabinet light in the kitchen provided all of the light in this part of the house. It
was a small but orderly place the area around the front door was lower and still slightly damp
from when she had come in. It entered directly into a modest carpeted living area, with carpet and
couches on the right, and a kind of lounge on the left, separated from the kitchen further back by a
counter. A path in the middle lead further towards a narrow hallway, with doors on the left and
right, the latter of which was to the room she had used. There was nothing on the walls besides
heavy blue curtains which hung almost floor to ceiling. The chair she currently occupied was soft,
clearly not new but clean and in good repair.

She evened it out, pushing it out of the window, bringing the temperature of the house down again.
There was something else in another room, the one at the end of the hall.
It was regular consistent, like a sphere. Soft all the way through. She shuffled further back into the
chair and concentrated. It was consistent on the outside, but inside it was something else, some kind
of element or maze of elements. It was inaccessible, visible only through faint densities rolling
outward from the center, there was some kind of insulation around it. Inside, it was complex, the
heat was moving through the elements in strange paths. It was not arbitrary, there was a pattern or
patterns quick, rapid, then pulsed, then broken up, representations of something else. Inside, the
further in she went, the hotter it was, much too hot, it seemed to twist. She tugged at the heat, but it
remained stubborn; the boundaries of its pattern made more clear by her attempts to influence it. It
held at fixtures, remained constant within tolerances. She tugged again, suppressing one of the
strange elements, and the heat reacted, redirected but the redirection was physical, mechanical, it
was a physical readjustment, not mechanical one. She drew back, and the element returned to its
prior state.
The heat did not flow down, the floor beneath the source was almost as cool as the rest of the
house. She searched deeper, but nothing else revealed itself, until, lit

Broken Promises
Broken promises
Thanks in great part to its green image British company Body Shop has prospered in the 80s. In
the 90s the firm tried to increase its world visibility linking its image to Brazil s rainforest and
approaching the Brazilian Kayapo Indians with a program they called `Trade Not Aid. The
association generated a barrage of free and laudatory media stories about the activities of Body
Shop. More recently however this image has been bruised. Is the Body Shop social conscience just
a sham?
Saulo Petean*
Body Shop s much vaunted `Trade Not Aid policy with indigenous peoples is running into serious
problems in the Amazon where it sources Brazil nut oil for one of its best selling beauty products.

Of this, $100,000 went toward the purchase of a used aircraft and initial expenses. The rest of the
money was never accounted for. In 92 and 93, Gordon Roddick, Anita s husband and BSI s
executive director, brought four Body Shop country head franchisers to the Indian communities,
charging them $25,000 each. Again, the Indians never saw any of this money.
After one of Anita Roddick s earliest visits, she announced that Body Shop would extend the
project to other Mebengokre villages. They began competing for Body Shop s favor, which
strained relations among the traditionally egalitarian culture. Roddick and Body Shop never made
good on their promise.
In the meantime, Body Shop began heavily promoting its links to the Kayapo. It announced what
it called the first ever intellectual property rights agreement. However, the Kayapo had agreed to
nothing. In 1993, a group of 30 Kayapo chiefs were hastily called by Gordon Roddick to a meeting
in BrasГlia, capital of Brazil. The chiefs happily believed that Body Shop was at last going to
make good on its promise to expand purchases of nut oil. What they did not know was that Body
Shop had recently gotten word that the press was about to report that it had never reached an
intellectual property rights agreement with the Kayapo. The chiefs were stunned and frustrated
when it became clear that Body Shop was trying to get the chiefs to legitimize the agreement, which
still had not been negotiated.

Darkness Can Be Pure, And Light
Darkness can be pure, and light can be tainted. This is the view with which Conrad expresses his
work in Heart of Darkness. Conrad through his writing demonstrates how light and Darkness does
not always hold rigid values. In Conrad s narrative, the traditional values of light and darkness is
not upheld, it can be seen how lightcan be used to emphasize evil while Darkness or black can be a
sign of purity. The motif of light and darkness are present throughout.
In his narrative of the ship Marlow refers to Europe as one of the dark places of the earth. In this
quote Darkness is not representative of evil, but instead of the uncivilized state in which Europe
used to be before being brought to the light which can be inferred to represent civilization. For
example, when Marlow refers to the explorers who were men enough to face the darkness it is in
reference to courageous explorers of the past who dare to explore the unknown. Civilized men of
the past went on these expeditions to find wealth and a name for themselves in history. Conrad uses
Darkness to represent the unknown in this context.
Marlow refers to light being like a running blaze on a plain, like a flash of lightning in the clouds.
This quote use light as a simile of life, and of how short it can be. This brings out a characteristic
of light; light does not last. Light although revealing when present does not last darkness is the
natural default in life. The violence in the two simile used

Secret Sharer Masculinity
In the novella, The Secret Sharer, a novella written in 1910 by Joseph Conrad, the author
explores the character s struggle to reach their ideal conception of self and ultimately argues that
men who are too in touch with their feminine attributes struggle to appear masculine in a man s
world. The Captain of the ship struggles to maintain his ideal masculine self, but is seen as a
weaker and an effeminate character in the eyes of his crew. He is seen as a stranger to the ship
but most importantly to himself. All these people had been together for eighteen months or so, and
my position was that of the only stranger on board... I was somewhat of a stranger to myself...but I
wondered how for I should turn out faithful to that ideal conception of one s own personality
(21,Conrad). Early on we see that the captain lacks his masculinityand is not seen powerful and is
insecure about his true self his effeminate character. The captain wants to be like any other captain
strong and manly, but struggles to be his ideal self, the great and powerful captain that every ship
has, a captain that holds power in the eyes of his crew man. Other ways we see this was when the
captain himself was commanded to close the porthole of the ship. Close your port sir, they are

characterized him a weak feminine captain. Thus, showing that men who are too close with their
feminine characteristics really have a struggle to show masculinity in the eyes of the people around

Character Analysis Of Ready Player One By Ernest Cline
In the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, the main character, Wade, changes throughout the
book. This is due to the experiences with trying to get the answer to the puzzles with some of these
being his living quarters and then getting thrown into jail.
In the beginning of the book, Wade is a more selfish type of person and he has to fend for
himself due to his background and home life. At the start, he came from a poor family so he had
to be resourceful. He showed us that he ...was curled up in an old sleeping bag in the corner of
the trailer s tiny laundry room, wedged into the gap between the wall and the dryer (Cline 13).
The main character, Wade, was forced to sleep in the laundry room due to how overcrowdedness
of the stack he was in. Even though he had a large amount of his family living in the same small
apartment with him, he was still able to make room for himself. He made a small spot for
himself to be comfortable in. This sets up how many people are in that small area and adds to
the loss that will come later in the story and that will play a part in changing him. He also was a
very determined person. He was sometimes obsessive with the ways he studied the life of
Halliday. He states that For the past five years, I d devoted all my free time to learning as much
as I possibly could about James Halliday (Cline 52). Wade was obsessed with the hunt and spent a
large part of a long while studying everything that the creator of the OASIS had loved in his life.

Video Games Effect On Human Development
In the modern era, a huge topic of controversy is video games, specifically how much and how
long people should play them, if at all. People have associated increased violence and other
problems with violent media. Science on the other hand, states that games can have a greater
positive impact on human development. Both sides present plenty of evidence to support their
claims, but are video games detrimental to people? Despite the negative view of video games
that people possess, the games do have beneficial effects on people s learning, critical thinking,
social and real world skills. Video games have made a huge impact on pop culture and the military
has made good use of them as well. Using their popularity, the United States Army has... Show

Some players who play these types of games have been proven to have better surgery skills than
actual surgeons. Meanwhile, video games have also been known to teach people business skills
like division of labor, supply and demand, distribution of profits, and conservation of resources.
One can easily apply these skills to real life scenarios whether they are a CEO of a multi billion
dollar company or using division of labor when clearing out their garage with the help of their
friends. Video games have incredible benefits not just in teaching people life skills but also
learning in general. In his book, Marc Prensky suggests that, what digital technology has offered
us and what game designers have adopted and perfected is a way to understand and adapt to each
learner in ways even a human teacher never can (Prensky 90). Prensky explains his argument by
connecting it to what a parent treasures most; their child s education, in order to convey that video
games can be more effective at teaching than teachers. It is a well known fact that students learn at
different paces and sometimes have trouble learning in school because it is either too easy or too
hard. Video games present the ability to learn from the student and adjust the difficulty to fit that
student s learning pace. In the same way that they make a good recruitment tool for the military,
video games disguise the parts of learning that

Zebra Mussels In The Environment Essay
Zebra mussels have the potential to cause a decline in ecosystem goods, and the benefits that
reservoirs provide. Irrigation reservoirs artificially change the environment. This would cause
larger amounts of distress in the community if the reservoirs did not provide benefits such as
recreation, including fishing, as well as provide wildlife habitat (Adams Lee, 2010). Zebra
mussels can render these reservoirs unusable for recreation because their sharp shells can cut the
feet of users. Zebra mussels also clear the water due to their filter feeders, which can result in a
decrease or change in fishpopulations, as well outcompete native mussel species. This clearing of
the water can also result in algal blooms (Vanderploeg, et al., 2001). It would not be beneficial to
irrigate land with water that has algal blooms because toxic bacteria may cause the algal blooms.
This would be particularly detrimental when growing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the threat of zebra mussels is real and should not be taken lightly. The Alberta irrigation
system contains over 8000 km of conveyance works, including pipelines and canals, and more than
fifty storage reservoirs, all of which could become infected should zebra mussels enter the province
( Irrigation in Alberta, 2015). The danger to agriculture and irrigation is very significant because
this species is able to reproduce so quickly. If zebra mussels were to become established in
Alberta, the monetary and time cost would be very high to manage the problem for the province,
Irrigation Districts, as well as the farmers. Many of Southern Alberta s popular boating lakes serve
as irrigation reservoirs ( Protecting Alberta s Irrigation, 2014). Boats infected with zebra mussels
are one way that they could be brought into the province. Fortunately, Alberta has a management

The Past, Present And Future Of Head Start
The Past, Present and Future of Head Start
Past
Head Start is one of the many programs started by President Lyndon B. Johnson to fight the war on
poverty in which he signed the economic opportunity act of 1964 that opened the nation to Head
Start and other programs that helped low income neighborhoods, According to President Johnson
We must open the doors of opportunity. But we must also equip our people to walk through those
doors (Kelly, 2016). The head Start programstarted out as a summer program mainly run by the
office of economic director Sargent Shriver. During the summer of 1964 the nation was
confronted by a surplus. Shriver asked himself what would be the best way to use this money.
He then set up a research team that developed a pie chart that showed great disparity against low
income families especially children. He noticed that out of thirty million poor people in the
nation half were children so he decided that he must come up with a program to help children.
Mr. Shriver stated It was clear that it was foolish to talk about a total war against poverty, if you
were doing nothing about children (Zigler, 1992). Head Start, this huge program that has been
serving families for over fifty years was born out of a surplus. The main goal of Shriver was to
solve three problems at once: He wanted use of public schools that were closed for the summer, he
wanted teachers to be employed for the summer and he wanted to introduce poor children to the

Cause And Effect Of Hearing Loss
The biggest handicap in the world is negative thinking and that people handicap themselves by
concentrating only on the negative instead of the positive, said Heather Whitestone (Premiere
SPeakers Bureau). Even though Heather Whitestone was deaf, she showed the world that she
was going to have to work hard to achieve success. Many people in the world are affected by
hearing loss. About two million people in the United States are completely deaf, while eighteen to
twenty one people need hearing impairments (Mango 21). Symptoms of hearing loss may include
difficulty understanding words or phrases. Needing to turn the volume up, avoiding social
situations, and trouble hearing consonants are also signs of hearing loss (Mayo Clinic Staff).
There are many types of hearing loss that can be gained. Congenital deafness is when someone is
born being deaf. Three out of every one thousand infants in the United States are born with
congenital deafness (Sheen 16). Another type of hearing loss is the conductive deafness. In this
case, the outer and middle ears, which send sound waves to the inner ear, are having the hearing
problems (11). Lastly, sensorineural hearing lossis when there is damage in the inner ear. The inner
ear s job is to convert sound waves to electrical or neutral impulses, so then it can be carried to
the brain and be translated (15). Causes of hearing loss include environmental and natural causes.
A premature baby is at a higher risk of being deaf (18). Ear

his father. The adaptation is an excellent work of art that uses the best of the play and
Hollywood movies to make an alluring and captivating movie. The literary text is formal in the
manner that it is written with a good plot and is intriguing because of the conversations taking
place by the jurors. The interesting conversations intertwined with logical statements trying to
prove or disprove the doubt of murder makes it much more impressive. The murder and tension
of a young boy s life, helps to pull a reader closer and leads them to be more involved. Causal
language is used in the book and lacks the tho s and shalt s of Shakespearean work. The stage
directions are typically one to two sentences describing many of the motions the characters
perform on stage which is longer than some other plays. The play utilizes both first and third
person throughout, first person helps the audience to experience from a character s perspective and
third person helps as an observer looking in. The movie 12 Angry Men directed by Sidney Lumet
was released in 1957. The reenacted movie is similar, but also has additional content not found in
the original play. The settings in the movie are given greater attention to in terms of specificity. In
the play, the scene begins with the jurors listening to the judge s final statements about the case in
the courtroom and then the jurors are dismissed and are shown walking out into the juryroom. The
movie however, starts with the audience being in the spot of a casual observer. The introduction
could have been used to show the reality of setting through the emphasis of how the court and
courtroom were set up. The settings aren t only built upon through use of scenery in the movie.
The judge and more importantly the defendant are shown in the movie as opposed to the play.
This change in the movie which was not in the play catches the reader s attention because in the
play, the audience has a biased view of the defendant, and the only thing known is that he is a 19
year boy who lived in the

The Reasons Before I Learned In Poetry
Before I learned about poetry, I understand that poetic are rhyme, the words are soft, using the
metaphor, symbolic and also saying indirect way or some secret in. After I have learned about
poetry, I understand that just a meaningful conversation, a few actions or some experiences
might be a poem. We don t need to be rhyme, we don t need to be secret in or we don t need
metaphor, symbolic too much to be poetic. Because of the reasons, I define the word poetic with
the simplest way that is every words or situations can be poetic and it is just depend on the people
who look at as a poetic or not. So, it is not actually different with my daily activities. There are
many reasons that we learned in the class. The first reason is that I have learned about thinking,
knowing, believing and feeling. In this concept, according to ee crummings, I learned that we don t
need to think, know or believe to be poetic but we just need to feel only. I understand that our
thoughts, knowing or believing make our feelings. Moreover, we could not feel someone s feeling
although we can think, know or believe. So, to feel in the poem, we already know, believe or think.

According to Tr. Joe, if we express our sensory that what we smell, what we taste, what we hear,
what we see and touch in details, it would become a poetic poem. For example, in the poem
Misfits within limits , I can see, hear and also taste. The speaker is phoning to his friend that I
can hear and they are going to the SONY HD Revolution Exhibition that I can see and they drink
cold drink that I can taste. Likely, in my daily life, I can understand by seeing with my eyes, by
hearing the sounds, by tasting the taste or by smelling with my nose or something that actually
happen to me. According to this reasons, it is similarities with my daily activities

Title: Harvesting and Storing Asparagus
Meta description: When your spring crop of asparagus is finally ready for picking, do you know
what to do? Find out about harvesting asparagus and storing it to last.
Asparagus spears are ready for picking from early spring through the end of June. Start picking the
spears in the third year after planting crowns, but let them grow in the first and second years,
because the ferns provide energy to the developing root system.

Preserving Asparagus
Asparagus can be pickled and stored for up to one year. To pickle one pound (450 mg) of asparagus:
Cut spears into lengths 1 inch (2.5cm) shorter than the depth of the canning jar.
Mix the spears with 1/3 cup (80 milliliters) of salt, set aside for 2 hours, then rinse and dry.
Sterilize the canning jars in boiling water for 10 minutes.
Heat white vinegar, a dash of sugar, dill seed, and mustard seeds in a sauce pan, boiling for one
minute.
Place the asparagus shoots into the jar, tips upward. Pour the hot vinegar mix over the asparagus
to approximately 1/3 of an inch (.8cm) below the rim, and seal with a canning jar lid and band.
Process the jars in a water bath, boiling them for 10 minutes. After cooling the jars, check the seal
by pressing the center and making sure it does not move. Put unsealed jars in the refrigerator and
eat them within 14 days.
You can also preserve asparagus by blanching it for about 3 minutes and storing it in freezer bags

How Does Shakespeare Show Loyalty In Othello
Reconsidering Loyalty and Honesty in Shakespeare s Othello
Othello is full of betrayals and broken bonds from almost all of the relationships that Shakespeare s
characters form in the play. Loyalty and honesty, or the lack thereof, are both essential parts of the
friendships and meaningful bonds in the play. Society perceives loyalty as the faithfulness in those
in relationships and those that have created a certain bond, and honesty as sincere without deceit or
untruthfulness. This paper focuses on Othello, arguing that the traditional ideas of loyalty, with an
emphasis on honesty, in relationships should be rethought through the many characters interactions
and motives. By examining how traditional definitions of loyalty and honesty in ... Show more

Othello married Desdemona out of his love for her, but eventually kills her because he no longer
believes that she is loyal, while Emilia, Desdemona s attendant and Iago s wife, tries to convince
him otherwise and calls Iago a betrayer.
Shakespeare does not waste any time developing the manipulative character of Iago, as his
Machiavellian actions are introduced in the first scene of Othello. Iago is a soldier in the
Venetian army, who wanted the position of the lieutenant. When Othello, the Venetian army
general, appoints Cassio to this position instead of Iago, he begins to portray a revengeful
character with problematic actions. When Iago states, I am not what I am (1.1.64), this is the
first notion that the audience and the characters will not know who he is because his thoughts
and his actions are different. He says this to prove that Othello truly does not know who he is
and that he may seem good on the outside, but it bad on the inside. In his article, I am not what I
am Destructive Emotions in an Organizational Hierarchy: The Case of Othello and Iago, Chris
Poulson argues that Iago is Shakespeare s most complex and powerful character as we see him
plotting revenge and his hatred for Othello in the first scene, which sets the tone for what is to
come in the tragedy.

Is Paul Appealing Or Appalling Book Summary
Paul was a Jew, born in Tarsus, but brought up in Jerusalem at the feet of Gamaliel, educated
strictly according to our ancestral law...at least that is how Luke puts it in Acts of the Apostles,
where he documented the actions of the followers of Jesus. This book of the New Testament
serves as a summarized history of the first Christians. Regardless of Paul s former life as a Jew, so
successful at spreading Christianitythat the idea that he is a co founder of Christianity, second only
to Jesus, is an extremely popular one. It could not have been an accident that he was able to
accomplish so much. Paul s conversion to Christianity is well documented but, aside from a few
important details about his education, not much is known with certainty... Show more content on

The Jewish community rejected the lax attitude concerning Mosaic Law. The Galatians, who
were brought up in an area of the world dominated by a polytheistic, law based religion, sought
comfort in the more disciplined Jewish approach. Paul: Appealing or Appalling? is the
surprising title of the first chapter in a book about the differing opinions, written by Christian
scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. Their account of Paul s controversial stance
on a variety of major issues like gender roles and slavery helps to understand the historical
significance of Paul s evangelism. Jews were easier to reach than Gentiles, because of their
sacred education, therefore the issue of circumcision was definitely an issue among the first
converts to Christianity. The question on everyone s mind was, Do you have to be a Jew to be a
Christian? Judeans were taught that salvation would only come to those circumcised according to
the custom. Once in Jerusalem, Paul went to the elders to announce God s grace in the lives of the
Gentiles. They rejoiced in his message, but took notice of his advice against Jewish law,

In spite of his latest crises, my father was still able to find much to be grateful for at Thanksgiving.
He was a master of the Polish art of rationalization, and able to see something bright and special in
the gloomiest circumstances.
Over a few Stegmaier beers on Thanksgiving night, my father joked about his latest predicament,
and found comfort in the words of his former mentor, Eddie Kuharcik who used to say, When life
hands out lemons, make lemonade!
My father spoke freely about Eddie Kuharcik, and his role in starting my father in business. I could
see how my father s taking Curly Kedzierski under his wing was his way of repaying Eddie.
In all the time my father talked about Eddie and the good old days on the Heights, he never once
mentioned my mother. It had been over twenty years since my mother left home, and in all those
years and the many conversations I shared with my father, her name was never mentioned. My
father had mellowed with age, but I doubted if he would ever become liberal minded enough to talk
about my mother again.
The Thanksgiving break was memorable for me, but probably more so for a number of my

become engaged over Thanksgiving. This was a significant number of students insofar as only six
students in our class entered medical school in the state of marital bliss, and only four had joined

Climate Change And Environmental Threats
Climate change and environmental threats came more into focus in the last years and presently
they represent a large challenge for the society. This means that environmental considerations have
to be integrated into a number of different decisions made by businesses, individuals, policymakers
and public administrators (Finnveden et al.
2009). Environmental Systems analysis is the field that attempts to find supply technology systems
solutions to these challenges (Chalmers University, 2012)
In the last years, many tools and methods have been developed to evaluate the environmental

recognizing areas with large environmental impact, and for evaluating and improving designs.
Therefore, in order to identify the environmental performances, for example, emissions and energy

Coles Human Resources Management Report Essay
Coles Human Resource Management Evaluation Report
Abstract
This report illustrates two key HRM strategies used by Coles Supermarkets Reward Management
and Performance Management. The core competence and business goal of Coles are elaborated and
the room for improvement have been identified, whereby Reward management and its
implementation have been critically analysed to bridge the gap between their operational loss
(weakness) and optimum performance (desired goal). Likewise, the method in which Performance
Management is used by Coles to lead their employees to work both efficiently and effectively has
been analysed. Performance Management is a useful tool to evaluate and ensure employee activities

For example, in either recruit policies or retain policies of Coles, the Fair Work Act must be
considered. The second factor is the condition of whole economy such as Inflation, change in
pay rates and salaries. During the inflation stage, the increasing living cost will cause higher
demand of income to satisfy the living standard. So, now it is the time to change reward system
to be more effective. Meanwhile, the change of pay rates and salaries can affect the HRM as
well. The third one is social factors such as different cultures of employees. For instance, when
an US company operates a division in India, the HRM should be different than America s to
ensure all employees with different cultures can work well together. The fourth factor that can
affect HRM is technological change. High quality employees must be skilled in the latest
technological devices because it can improve the efficiency of work and help the achievement of
the organization s goals. As a result, it will affect the organization s recruit policies. The fifth
factor is that can affect HRM is environmental factors such as harsh weather conditions or
greenfields. For Coles, if a supermarket operate in a greenfield area or in a harsh weather
conditions, the recruit and retain policies must be changed to attract more people to work there. The
last factor is legal which means any laws that can affect HRM. For example, the minimum wages set

Prejudice And Prejudice
Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the present
inaccessible. This quote was written by Maya Angelou, and she wrote it because when she was
at a very young age, she was raped because she was black. After she was raped all the kids at school
made fun of her, so from that moment on she decided to not let anyone be prejudiceor stereotype
anyone. So she started writing quotes so other people can know how it feels and to share her
story with everyone else. At that age in her life, everyone was fighting about racism, people
were prejudice and stereotyping all the other people who were not the same skin color as them.
People feel like they have to change, for example they change their looks, the way they talk, the
way they dress, or even the way they act around people. Prejudice and stereotyping negatively
affect people s identity. In today s world, people are using prejudice to negatively affect people s
identity. People are prejudice in many different ways today. For example, you can walk into the
lunchroom and see different cliques at different tables and not socializing with anyone but the
people at their tables. Even in highschool, cheerleaders, and football players tend to only talk to
their group of friends. There are teachers that try to mix it up by pairing popular kids with
unpopular kids, but even that doesn t always work. In The Outsiders, The Greasers are very
prejudice against the Socs, The Greasers live on the East side and don t have a lot of money.
The Socs, on the other hand, live on the West side and have a lot of money and have anything
they could ever ask for. The Socs think The Greasers are gross and poor kids and The Greasers
think that The Socs are rich and super snobby kids. The Greasers and Socs think this about each
other because they have never really had the chance to get to know each other, so the Greasers
just assume that all of the Socs are bad and only like to jump people. On the other hand, the Socs
think that the Greasers are just hoods and look for fights and are super weak and that they are way
better than them. This negatively affect The Greasers lives because they think that they need to be
something that they re not.

Evidence Based Management Essay
This essay is going to analyze the article titled What s the Evidence on Evidence Based
Management? by Trish Reay, Whitney Berta, and Melanie Kazman Kohn that was written in 2009.
The article was a systematic review of the available literature in response to increasing advocacy
for the application of evidence based management(EBMgt). The authors were driven by three
overarching research objectives: (I) to find out whether there was adequate literature about the
concept of EBMgt, (II) to evaluate the quality of existing evidence (literature) concerning EBMgt,
and (III) to find out whether there is a correlation between employing EBMgt and improved
organizational performance.
The Author s Ability to Explain Why the Study According to the authors of the article, their
systematic review was necessitated by the increased call for EBMgt. They note that there are a
number of eloquent and outspoken proponents of evidence based management, especially Denise

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Forensic Science
Forensic science is a multidisciplinary subject utilized for looking at wrongdoing s and social event
confirmation to be utilized as a part of arraignment of guilty parties in a courtroom. Obviously, a
qualitative identification must precede any attempt at quantitation, for little value is served by
attempting to quantitate a material without first determining its identity (Saferstein, 2010, p.205).
A quantitative measurement is normally expert by exact estimation of a solitary property of the
material. A qualitative analysis of a material requires the determination of numerous properties
using a variety of analytical techniques (Saferstein, 2010, p.123). When processing both
qualitative and quantitative analysis of physical evidence you want to make sure you first identify
and then classify the type of physical evidence. Qualitative analysis considers fine qualifications
to be drawn because it is not important to shoehorn the information into a limited number of
groupings. The primary weakness of Qualitative analysis is to deal with corpus investigation is
that their discoveries cannot be stretched out to more extensive populaces with a similar level of
sureness that quantitative analysis can. This is because of the discoveries of the exploration are
not tried to find whether they are factually critical or because of shot. Quantitative analysis enables

is located on 12 acres of land. They started out with four employees in 1976 and grow over the
years to over 100. The company manufactures two types of anchors in different sizes. The types are
the mushroom/bell anchor and the snap hook anchor. Albatross Anchor has many manufacturing
problems which are the cause of the company not doing as well as it should be. The company is
antiquated, worn and does not meet government guidelines. Albatross can be a company of the

E. The capacity and facilities have out grown what the company has now. The company was
designed to be a small manufacturer. Albatross is sitting on 12 acres of land they would be able
to expand to make room for better technology. They have plenty of land to become an aggressive
modern company, who is producing a top quality product. They can be the top producer of
anchors with the changes that need to come about. Capacity is the maximum amount capable of
producing. Another why to expand the capacity is to consider outsourcing. Outsourcing would
come into play when they cannot set up the equipment and they need to produce product to
satisfy an order. Some things to consider are the cost of making the product, such as labor, raw
materials, and overhead. The facilities need to be made larger. The area that holds the raw
materials should be expanded and should be close to the receiving area. Finished products
should be close to the shipping area. This would cut down on time by not having to move
product from such a long distance. The receiving and shipping should be together on the side
where imports and exports are done. F. Service to customers is not very good. Long lead times
and bad shipping methods are cause for problems. Accessibility and convenience are also a cause
for concern.

reading through, however, the conclusion can be made that the author does not follow many of the
various rules associated with writing a sonnet. For instance, the rhyme scheme of this poem is not
that of a sonnet at all. Normally, a Petrarchan sonnet would follow an a b b a, a b b a, and so on;
however, the author instead strays from the expected and has very little, if any, rhyming throughout
the entire piece. The only time any rhyme is seen is for the few slant rhymes the author includes
and even those do not contribute to making it a true sonnet. Another missing aspect of sonnet
writing is iambic pentameter. All of the lines, except the last, do not meet the guidelines of ten
syllables, but why? Since this is the ending of the poem and the speaker mentions to blowout the
candle maybe they are giving up on their rant ( Sonnet 14). Or it possibly could be to differentiate
from the rest of the poem and actually create a suitable line. Although many parts of the poem do
not meet the reader s expectations, one aspect of the poem that does meet the... Show more content

The conflict, therefore, would be the forced structure of sonnets and how it is easy unless you get
Elizabethan and insist the iambic bongos must be played ( Sonnet 5 6). The author clearly does
not like being confined to the rules of sonnet writing and address them here, but in the final six
lines, the sestet, the speaker addresses various aspects of typical sonnets, such as a resolved
conflict, longing and heartache, and also a reference to Petrarch and his love Laura. Why include
these in the sonnet if these exact aspects are the

Mr Pitt Case Study
Relevant Facts
Mr. Pitt was arrested on the front yard of his home while mowing the yard. The area being
mowed contained a city owned fire hydrant and a city owned tree. The strip was between the
street and the sidewalk. Other residents sought city permission to remove or alter the trees on the
strip. Officers Scully and Mulder noticed Mr. Pitt mowing this area of land and talking to himself.
Officers exited the cruiser and approached Mr. Pitt from behind. They noticed a weapon belt but
no weapon. While Mr. Pitt mowed, he turned and faced officers. At this time the officers noticed an
indistinct object hanging from the weapon belt. As Mr. Pitt left the mower in compliance with
officer s orders, the officers observed a shining, freshly sharpened ... Show more content on

Grendel s Mother In Beowulf
In the poem Beowulf Grendel s Mother is a monster that Beowulf himself has to fight. The story
is that she is an avenging mother to avenge her son s death, who Beowulf had killed. But is that
all to the story? It is if one doesn t want to look further into the story, however, I did take a deep
dive into the story to create my own little theory. Grendels mother is not just a transition, or an
actual monster , nor is she just a mother avenging the death of her son; Grendel s mother is much,
much more than what people believe.
Grendel s mother, despite being a monster , was described as a woman. But how could a women
be such a monster? That is where my theory pops in. While reading Beowulf they had multiple

Therapeutic Background Of Equine Therapy
The Therapeutic Background of Equine Therapy
Therapeutic horseback riding, a type of equine assisted psychotherapy, is a form of social, physical
and emotional therapy. In Ancient Greek, horseback riding was a well known treatment for people
who wished to rid themselves of physical or mental ailments. However, it wasn t until 1900 that
therapeutic horseback riding began to be used in Canada and the United States. Nevertheless, after
being introduced, equine therapy slowly gathered momentum across North America and, by 1969, a
group of equine therapists founded the first specialized equestrian therapy centre. In the same year,
the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) was created to coordinate,

Environment Of Maycomb
Brett Mann English 111 Mrs. Stockton September 9th, 2017 The Environment of Maycomb The
moment that we hear about Boo Radley, we know that Maycomb is not a normal town. In
Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird She goes into great detail on many aspects of the time. The
reason for this amount of detail is to help move the story along in the book. This is due to the fact
that Maycomb is not only a town with interesting stories, but is also a town that is setup to
motivate some actions in the novel. There are many examples of this happening, and the main three
that I will be discussing in this writing are how the events and ideas of the time affect the story,
how the people of the time have affected the story, and finally to describe the aftermath... Show

The main antagonist, Bob Ewell, for example is a very racist white man who in the story is the
main reason that Tom Robinson was unfairly convicted of rape. He told the court that Tom
Robinson raped his daughter, Mayella Ewell, and when Atticus defended Tom Robinson in this
case, Bob Ewell was the one who reacted most negatively towards Atticus, even to the point to
attack Atticus children. Atticus on the other hand, can be seen as the closest to a protagonist
there is in the story. This is due to the fact that he is not racist, and truly believes in justice and
fairness, which can be seen when he defended Tom Robinson. He caused many events in the
story. One is how people reacted to him. They treated him very unfairly, and in Bob Ewell s
case, caused him to harass, threaten, and attack children. He also made the jury discuss a lot
longer for the case then normal for a black case. The final person that affects the story of this
novel the most is Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a good hearted black man, that was treated
very unfairly due to the prejudice of that time. He was convicted on the charge of raping Mayella
Ewell, despite the bad evidence to support this claim, and then later he was shot and killed when
he tried to escape the confines he was placed into. Those were events that were caused by this
character, and they go to show the unfairness that black people had it back in

He also points out that descending climbers could possibly run out of oxygen so he wanted to

Boukreev climbed without oxygen and how that might ve caused a dangerous situation. Boukreev
responded by saying that climbing without oxygen was safer for him and he did it to avoid the
sudden loss of acclimatization but also to give it to someone else who might run low on oxygen.
Krakauer also raised another question about Boukreev s clothing choice on summit day. Krakauer
said that Boukreev did not wear adequately clothing to protect him from the weather. On the other
hand, Boukreev implies that he wore what he did because in the photographs that he took, he

King Leopold s Ghost Analysis
King Leopold s Ghost Analysis The real names of our people were destroyed during slavery. The
last name of my forefathers was taken from them when they were brought to America and made
slaves, and then the name of the slave master was given, which we refuse; we reject that name
today and refuse it. I never acknowledge it whatsoever. In King Leopold s Ghost talks about
Leopold II ruling over the Belgium Congo territory. He forced the enslaved individuals to do
horrific and exhausting tasks, and people who disagreed with him made it known of his horrible
acts. Several countries began to disagree with Leopold s dictatorship. He was a tyrant. King
Leopold s Ghost is a phenomenal book because of the way individuals can make a difference in
others lives. The theme of this book is something that relates to our lives everyday. Our actions
can impacts individuals tremendously. There were several people that spoke out throughout this
book, but the most important one is George Washington Williams. He was a minister, historian,
and was in the Civil War. Williams was a very strong headed individual, and when Leopold tried
to persuade him not to visit the Congo he did not listen. What he witnessed in the Congo made
him ill. He wrote letters that were published in newspapers making the horrific events that Leopold
was ruling over. An example that Williams gives is very blunt, but just a mild event that occurred
in the Congo under Leopold s ruling. The Courts of your Majesty s

Peggy Post, of the Emily Post etiquette family, notes that more and more men are attending the
bridal shows she hosts around the country, and they re showing both sense and sensibility. The
reason for the change can easily be traced to economics: Because it costs a bundle to get married,
more grooms and their families are sharing the bill rather than have it all fall on the bride s
family s shoulders. Coupled with this is the fact that men are marrying later, so it s more likely
they have jobs that allow them to help pay the costs. These grooms aren t just pulling out their
credit cards and nodding, Yes, honey, anything you want, says Post. They re keeping close tabs
on where the money is going. But it s not all moola that s driving this. This is a new generation of
the sensitive bridegroom, like Centanni, who wants to have a say about the readings and hymns,
and who cares how his family is included in the celebration. It s also a generation that strives for
peer marriage, where husband and wife communicate as equals. A perfect example, says Post, is
that there are more instances of planning a wedding around divorced parents and stepfamilies a
challenge that from the start takes good communication between bride and groom. Then there s the
lighter side. As Centanni sees it: Why should Amy have all the fun? Going to the caterer and
tasting the food, that s fun. And every time we go into a store, I have to go into the kitchen section.

The United States Antitrust Laws
INTRODUCTION Through the course of this paper I will introduce and discuss the history of the
movement towards an actively and engaged antitrust legislation. I will also identify the original and
early antitrust laws and how they have influenced the economy, as we know it today. Upon the
completion of this paper you will understand who was set to benefit (gain) from anti legislation and
who loses under the intentions of the antitrust laws today and in the past.
LITERATURE REVIEW The United States antitrust legislation is a legislation designed to break up
and prevent the formation of new monopolies to increase competition and societal welfare. Thus the
United State Antitrust law is a collection of both state and federal government laws enacted to
promote fair competition in the economy. The antitrust laws main statutes consist of the Sherman
Act of 1890, the Clayton Act of 1914 and the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914. In
combination these acts have enforced the proper rules and regulations that businesses must conform
to today to ensure that there is a healthy competition within the economy to not only the benefit of
the consumers who utilize these services and goods but for the health of the businesses who make
up our market industries. While Rockefeller s Standard Oil is a well known example of an early
monopoly a few other examples of early monopolistic companies are known as The Whisky Trust,
and the Tobacco Trust, Sugar Trust and J.P. Morgan s U.S. Steel

The Controversy Of Legalizing Prostitution
The 21st century has seen many changes in the worldviews of the global community. Different
bodies campaign for the rights of people indulging in practices that the global society has seen as
taboos for the last twenty centuries. These include the rights of same sex marriages, human cloning,
physician assisted suicide, abortion, and prostitution. This is because the society realizes that each
individual has a right to choose his or her lifestyle in a democratic world. The legalization of

This is an immoral act, which goes against the ethics of several religions and cultures. Legalizing
prostitution will be legalizing promiscuity, which destroys many families and brings about social
instability. This is because it threatens the marriageinstitution since most clients are married men.
This will degrade the society s morals, exposing children to immoral practices from a young age.
Legalizing prostitution can also lead to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The government
spends a lot of money to curb the sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDs epidemic. This
happens even when prostitution is illegal. Most individuals ignore the use of protection when
having sex with prostitutes. These prostitutes have multiple sex partners and thus they can act as a
good route of transmission for these diseases. Legalizing prostitution can also increase the instances
of human trafficking. This is because owners of prostitution agencies may run out of willing
prostitutes and thus force young men and women into this practice. Other young people may
choose this profession because of hard economic situations. Thus, prostitution is not always a free
choice for all the people

Sweatshops In China
It was Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere
ignorance. Many people in the Western world either do not know or choose to ignore the fact that a
massive amount of products that come into North America from faraway lands are produced in
sweatshops, including shoes, clothing, and toys. This ignorance over the inhumane and unjust
labour conditions happening in factories on other sides of the globe is precisely what keeps these
horrifying practices alive. China is home to one of the most enormous and concentrated sweatshop
systems in the world. There are approximately 150 million people in China working in ghastly
conditions, having to live off nearly unsustainable pay, and being refused benefits... Show more

In present China, forced and unpaid prison labor is widespread and common. Characteristics of
Chinese sweatshops include overcrowding, lack of sanitary conditions, no worker breaks,
demands to complete a task within a limited period of time, and a total lack of job security.
Government negligence is what allows such abuses to persist. Some plants force employees into
working extraordinary amounts of hours, for example, a Price Waterhouse audit of Nike
factories in China found that some require seven days of work per week. Many workers who
supposedly have the choice to work overtime must do so in order to survive on their low wage
rates. The people working in Chinese sweatshops only get a small amount of payment for their
work and nothing more. The locals do not benefit at all, but instead suffer from the presence of
foreign businesses in their country. As for the foreigners, one telling statistic is that the United States
imports an estimated $100 million per year in goods produced by Chinese migrant workers. The
outside companies gain millions as the developing countries struggle to survive. Presently,
foreigners gain massively from the resource of migrant workers in China. The locals that can
benefit from their presence benefit very, very little, that is, if a small amount of money for their
work is seen as a benefit. The Chinese employees work is valuable to the company, for their

The Harvard Management Company and Inflation Protected Bonds 1(a) Regular Treasury bonds are purchased at face value in the beginning or an adjusted price prior maturity. And in every period, normally annul or semiannual, investor will receive a coupon as an interest and at the maturity a principal plus coupon. (b) Coupon and principal of the Regular Treasury bonds are fixed, therefore if the inflation rate increases in the forecasting future, investor will receive the same amount of coupon and principal with less real value and purchasing power. (c)TIPS are simultaneously related to change of inflation rate which means the principal and coupon will adjust instantly to change of inflation rate. TIPS like Regular Treasury bonds... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3 We can make a hedge portfolio by taking a long position in the inflation indexed TIPS and a short position in the regular bond with the same duration. We know that there are two variables affecting the bonds real interest rate and actual inflation rate. When nominal interest rate changes, long and short positions of bonds in portfolio offset each other. When inflation rate changes, TIPS would change its price and leave regular bond in short position exposed to inflation risk. 4(a) Harvard s Policy Portfolio is a portfolio within a group of asset classes including different instruments. It can be used as a benchmark to evaluate the performance of investment strategies. (b) To determine Policy Portfolio by using mean variance analysis. Given a variable number of expected portfolio return, we would choose our strategy from a set of minimum variance portfolio basing on our tolerance for risk. (c) Because one of HMS s goal is to preserving the real value of endowment. Nominal return may reflect much lower real value of endowment because of inflation. So only the real return can make sure that Harvard does not lose money. (d)From exhibit4, domestic equity and foreign equity have a correlation of 0.5. It means there is a relatively big part of portfolios overlaps, which means equity and foreign equity may affect each other due to exposure to risks. 5Yes, TIPS should be considered as an additional asset class in Harvard s Policy ... • 4. Feminist Perspective In Hamlet Throughout history, women have endured patriarchy and oppression. The re envisioning of literature in a feminist canon has reinvigorated lost works of women and has made clear themes of sexual difference and importance of gender within classical texts. In William Shakespeare s Hamlet, the feminist perspective reveals several elements of these societal differences that were so relevant in Elizabethan times. Although the play suggests an array of interpretations, the feminist perspective emphasizes the strength and significance of the feminine elements in this controversial piece of literature, mainly through the deterioration of Ophelia s psyche, the patriarchal relationships that admonish the component of power concerning gender, and the significant rhetoric that differentiates these roles. Within the feminist canon, the portrayal of the character Ophelia and her mental state in the play have resulted in a vast amount of discussion concerning how male dominated society, and its pressures, have affected women. Ophelia s insanity is not merely the inner workings of her mind derailing but the composite result of the repression underlying within the atmosphere of Elsinore. Specifically, in Act IV, Scene v where she is perceived to have gone insane conveys a multitude of ideas of what is the meaning of this outburst and its impact on gender perspectives. According to Elaine Showalter, Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism, there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was a small but orderly place the area around the front door was lower and still slightly damp from when she had come in. It entered directly into a modest carpeted living area, with carpet and couches on the right, and a kind of lounge on the left, separated from the kitchen further back by a counter. A path in the middle lead further towards a narrow hallway, with doors on the left and right, the latter of which was to the room she had used. She shuffled further back into the chair and concentrated. It was consistent on the outside, but inside it was something else, some kind of element or maze of elements. It was inaccessible, visible only through faint densities rolling outward from the center, there was some kind of insulation around it. Inside, it was complex, the heat was moving through the elements in strange paths. It was not arbitrary, there was a pattern or patterns quick, rapid, then pulsed, then broken up, representations of something else. Inside, the further in she went, the hotter it was, much too hot, it seemed to twist. She tugged at the heat, but it remained stubborn; the boundaries of its pattern made more clear by her attempts to influence it. It held at fixtures, remained constant within tolerances. She tugged again, suppressing one of the strange elements, and the heat reacted, redirected but the redirection was physical, mechanical, it was a physical readjustment, not mechanical one. She drew back, and the element returned to its prior state. The heat did not flow down, the floor beneath the source was almost as cool as the rest of the house. • 6. Broken Promises Broken promises Thanks in great part to its green image British company Body Shop has prospered in the 80s. In the 90s the firm tried to increase its world visibility linking its image to Brazil s rainforest and approaching the Brazilian Kayapo Indians with a program they called `Trade Not Aid. The association generated a barrage of free and laudatory media stories about the activities of Body Shop. More recently however this image has been bruised. Is the Body Shop social conscience just a sham? In 92 and 93, Gordon Roddick, Anita s husband and BSI s executive director, brought four Body Shop country head franchisers to the Indian communities, charging them $25,000 each. Again, the Indians never saw any of this money. After one of Anita Roddick s earliest visits, she announced that Body Shop would extend the project to other Mebengokre villages. They began competing for Body Shop s favor, which strained relations among the traditionally egalitarian culture. Roddick and Body Shop never made good on their promise. In the meantime, Body Shop began heavily promoting its links to the Kayapo. It announced what it called the first ever intellectual property rights agreement. However, the Kayapo had agreed to nothing. In 1993, a group of 30 Kayapo chiefs were hastily called by Gordon Roddick to a meeting in BrasГlia, capital of Brazil. The chiefs happily believed that Body Shop was at last going to make good on its promise to expand purchases of nut oil. What they did not know was that Body Shop had recently gotten word that the press was about to report that it had never reached an intellectual property rights agreement with the Kayapo. The chiefs were stunned and frustrated when it became clear that Body Shop was trying to get the chiefs to legitimize the agreement, which still had not been negotiated. ... • 7. Darkness Can Be Pure, And Light Darkness can be pure, and light can be tainted. This is the view with which Conrad expresses his work in Heart of Darkness. Conrad through his writing demonstrates how light and Darkness does not always hold rigid values. In Conrad s narrative, the traditional values of light and darkness is not upheld, it can be seen how lightcan be used to emphasize evil while Darkness or black can be a sign of purity. The motif of light and darkness are present throughout. In his narrative of the ship Marlow refers to Europe as one of the dark places of the earth. In this quote Darkness is not representative of evil, but instead of the uncivilized state in which Europe used to be before being brought to the light which can be inferred to represent civilization. For example, when Marlow refers to the explorers who were men enough to face the darkness it is in reference to courageous explorers of the past who dare to explore the unknown. Civilized men of the past went on these expeditions to find wealth and a name for themselves in history. Conrad uses Darkness to represent the unknown in this context. Marlow refers to light being like a running blaze on a plain, like a flash of lightning in the clouds. This quote use light as a simile of life, and of how short it can be. This brings out a characteristic of light; light does not last. Light although revealing when present does not last darkness is the natural default in life. The violence in the two simile used ... Secret Sharer Masculinity In the novella, The Secret Sharer, a novella written in 1910 by Joseph Conrad, the author explores the character s struggle to reach their ideal conception of self and ultimately argues that men who are too in touch with their feminine attributes struggle to appear masculine in a man s world. The Captain of the ship struggles to maintain his ideal masculine self, but is seen as a weaker and an effeminate character in the eyes of his crew. He is seen as a stranger to the ship but most importantly to himself. All these people had been together for eighteen months or so, and my position was that of the only stranger on board... I was somewhat of a stranger to myself...but I wondered how for I should turn out faithful to that ideal conception of one s own personality (21,Conrad). Early on we see that the captain lacks his masculinityand is not seen powerful and is insecure about his true self his effeminate character. The captain wants to be like any other captain strong and manly, but struggles to be his ideal self, the great and powerful captain that every ship has, a captain that holds power in the eyes of his crew man. • 11. Character Analysis Of Ready Player One By Ernest Cline In the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, the main character, Wade, changes throughout the book. This is due to the experiences with trying to get the answer to the puzzles with some of these being his living quarters and then getting thrown into jail. In the beginning of the book, Wade is a more selfish type of person and he has to fend for himself due to his background and home life. At the start, he came from a poor family so he had to be resourceful. He showed us that he ...was curled up in an old sleeping bag in the corner of the trailer s tiny laundry room, wedged into the gap between the wall and the dryer (Cline 13). The main character, Wade, was forced to sleep in the laundry room due to how overcrowdedness of the stack he was in. Even though he had a large amount of his family living in the same small apartment with him, he was still able to make room for himself. He made a small spot for himself to be comfortable in. This sets up how many people are in that small area and adds to the loss that will come later in the story and that will play a part in changing him. He also was a very determined person. He was sometimes obsessive with the ways he studied the life of Halliday. He states that For the past five years, I d devoted all my free time to learning as much as I possibly could about James Halliday (Cline 52). Wade was obsessed with the hunt and spent a large part of a long while studying everything that the creator of the OASIS had loved in his life. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People have associated increased violence and other problems with violent media. Science on the other hand, states that games can have a greater positive impact on human development. Both sides present plenty of evidence to support their claims, but are video games detrimental to people? Despite the negative view of video games that people possess, the games do have beneficial effects on people s learning, critical thinking, social and real world skills. Some players who play these types of games have been proven to have better surgery skills than actual surgeons. Meanwhile, video games have also been known to teach people business skills like division of labor, supply and demand, distribution of profits, and conservation of resources. One can easily apply these skills to real life scenarios whether they are a CEO of a multi billion dollar company or using division of labor when clearing out their garage with the help of their friends. Video games have incredible benefits not just in teaching people life skills but also learning in general. In his book, Marc Prensky suggests that, what digital technology has offered us and what game designers have adopted and perfected is a way to understand and adapt to each learner in ways even a human teacher never can (Prensky 90). Prensky explains his argument by connecting it to what a parent treasures most; their child s education, in order to convey that video games can be more effective at teaching than teachers. It is a well known fact that students learn at different paces and sometimes have trouble learning in school because it is either too easy or too hard. Video games present the ability to learn from the student and adjust the difficulty to fit that student s learning pace. • 13. Zebra Mussels In The Environment Essay Zebra mussels have the potential to cause a decline in ecosystem goods, and the benefits that reservoirs provide. Irrigation reservoirs artificially change the environment. This would cause larger amounts of distress in the community if the reservoirs did not provide benefits such as recreation, including fishing, as well as provide wildlife habitat (Adams Lee, 2010). Zebra mussels can render these reservoirs unusable for recreation because their sharp shells can cut the feet of users. Zebra mussels also clear the water due to their filter feeders, which can result in a decrease or change in fishpopulations, as well outcompete native mussel species. This clearing of the water can also result in algal blooms (Vanderploeg, et al., 2001). It would not be beneficial to irrigate land with water that has algal blooms because toxic bacteria may cause the algal blooms. This would be particularly detrimental when growing... The Alberta irrigation system contains over 8000 km of conveyance works, including pipelines and canals, and more than fifty storage reservoirs, all of which could become infected should zebra mussels enter the province ( Irrigation in Alberta, 2015). The danger to agriculture and irrigation is very significant because this species is able to reproduce so quickly. If zebra mussels were to become established in Alberta, the monetary and time cost would be very high to manage the problem for the province, Irrigation Districts, as well as the farmers. Many of Southern Alberta s popular boating lakes serve as irrigation reservoirs ( Protecting Alberta s Irrigation, 2014). It was either me continuing the journey to find the passage, or turning back home for these people to get help. I was leaning towards the continuing side, but my son was in bad shape, so I hesitated for a long time. A few months later, in June of 1611, much of my crew had mutinied, and I knew I was going to be swindled. As a matter of fact, much of my crew left by getting on the large vessel. I sent my son with them, because I wanted him to live for a long time. After that event, I was only left with seven others, and it would only take until the end of that year to run out of food, and the water in the river was too cold to drink. Likewise, the GamePad screen is used in a couple of ways. The most basic of which is as a secondary display of what is happening on the television. However, during the Biathlon event, the GamePad is used in a resourceful manner as you will use the GamePad to aim your bow via gyro controls and get a zoomed in view of the target. A lot of games are controlled using the Wii Remote Plus (which comes packaged with the title), and, for the most part, they play well. One of the poorest implementations of motion control is found in Figure Skating. It requires odd movement of the Wii Remote which makes the event unappealing. Figure Skating aside, all the other events play well using the Wii Remote Plus and the motion controls really bring them to life. We found the Dream Events to be incredible fun while playing with family and friends. Many of these events are creative and make for an amusing play session. One of the best Dream Events to play with friends is Snowball Scrimmage, which is a 2 on 2 game. The goal of Snowball Scrimmage is to place a giant ball into a hole. Sounds simple enough, right? Johnson to fight the war on poverty in which he signed the economic opportunity act of 1964 that opened the nation to Head Start and other programs that helped low income neighborhoods, According to President Johnson We must open the doors of opportunity. But we must also equip our people to walk through those doors (Kelly, 2016). The head Start programstarted out as a summer program mainly run by the office of economic director Sargent Shriver. During the summer of 1964 the nation was confronted by a surplus. Shriver asked himself what would be the best way to use this money. He then set up a research team that developed a pie chart that showed great disparity against low income families especially children. He noticed that out of thirty million poor people in the nation half were children so he decided that he must come up with a program to help children. Mr. Shriver stated It was clear that it was foolish to talk about a total war against poverty, if you were doing nothing about children (Zigler, 1992). Head Start, this huge program that has been serving families for over fifty years was born out of a surplus. The main goal of Shriver was to solve three problems at once: He wanted use of public schools that were closed for the summer, he wanted teachers to be employed for the summer and he wanted to introduce poor children to the school environment ... • 18. Cause And Effect Of Hearing Loss The biggest handicap in the world is negative thinking and that people handicap themselves by concentrating only on the negative instead of the positive, said Heather Whitestone (Premiere SPeakers Bureau). Even though Heather Whitestone was deaf, she showed the world that she was going to have to work hard to achieve success. Many people in the world are affected by hearing loss. About two million people in the United States are completely deaf, while eighteen to twenty one people need hearing impairments (Mango 21). Symptoms of hearing loss may include difficulty understanding words or phrases. Needing to turn the volume up, avoiding social situations, and trouble hearing consonants are also signs of hearing loss (Mayo Clinic Staff). There are many types of hearing loss that can be gained. Congenital deafness is when someone is born being deaf. Three out of every one thousand infants in the United States are born with congenital deafness (Sheen 16). Another type of hearing loss is the conductive deafness. In this case, the outer and middle ears, which send sound waves to the inner ear, are having the hearing problems (11). Lastly, sensorineural hearing lossis when there is damage in the inner ear. The inner ear s job is to convert sound waves to electrical or neutral impulses, so then it can be carried to the brain and be translated (15). Causes of hearing loss include environmental and natural causes. A premature baby is at a higher risk of being deaf (18). Ear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Literary Themes In Reginald Rose s 12 Angry Men The literary piece 12 Angry Men is a written play by Reginald Rose. It is a piece that describes the concerns of a jury on a homicide case. The case involves a teenage boy that allegedly killed his father. The adaptation is an excellent work of art that uses the best of the play and Hollywood movies to make an alluring and captivating movie. The literary text is formal in the manner that it is written with a good plot and is intriguing because of the conversations taking place by the jurors. The interesting conversations intertwined with logical statements trying to prove or disprove the doubt of murder makes it much more impressive. The murder and tension of a young boy s life, helps to pull a reader closer and leads them to be more involved. Causal language is used in the book and lacks the tho s and shalt s of Shakespearean work. The stage directions are typically one to two sentences describing many of the motions the characters perform on stage which is longer than some other plays. The play utilizes both first and third person throughout, first person helps the audience to experience from a character s perspective and third person helps as an observer looking in. The movie 12 Angry Men directed by Sidney Lumet was released in 1957. The reenacted movie is similar, but also has additional content not found in the original play. The settings in the movie are given greater attention to in terms of specificity. In the play, the scene begins with the jurors listening to the judge s final statements about the case in the courtroom and then the jurors are dismissed and are shown walking out into the juryroom. The movie however, starts with the audience being in the spot of a casual observer. The introduction could have been used to show the reality of setting through the emphasis of how the court and courtroom were set up. The settings aren t only built upon through use of scenery in the movie. The judge and more importantly the defendant are shown in the movie as opposed to the play. This change in the movie which was not in the play catches the reader s attention because in the play, the audience has a biased view of the defendant, and the only thing known is that he is a 19 year boy who lived in the ... Society perceives loyalty as the faithfulness in those in relationships and those that have created a certain bond, and honesty as sincere without deceit or untruthfulness. Othello married Desdemona out of his love for her, but eventually kills her because he no longer believes that she is loyal, while Emilia, Desdemona s attendant and Iago s wife, tries to convince him otherwise and calls Iago a betrayer. Shakespeare does not waste any time developing the manipulative character of Iago, as his Machiavellian actions are introduced in the first scene of Othello. Iago is a soldier in the Venetian army, who wanted the position of the lieutenant. When Othello, the Venetian army general, appoints Cassio to this position instead of Iago, he begins to portray a revengeful character with problematic actions. When Iago states, I am not what I am (1.1.64), this is the first notion that the audience and the characters will not know who he is because his thoughts and his actions are different. He says this to prove that Othello truly does not know who he is and that he may seem good on the outside, but it bad on the inside. • 30. Prejudice And Prejudice Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the present inaccessible. This quote was written by Maya Angelou, and she wrote it because when she was at a very young age, she was raped because she was black. After she was raped all the kids at school made fun of her, so from that moment on she decided to not let anyone be prejudiceor stereotype anyone. So she started writing quotes so other people can know how it feels and to share her story with everyone else. At that age in her life, everyone was fighting about racism, people were prejudice and stereotyping all the other people who were not the same skin color as them. People feel like they have to change, for example they change their looks, the way they talk, the way they dress, or even the way they act around people. Prejudice and stereotyping negatively affect people s identity. In today s world, people are using prejudice to negatively affect people s identity. People are prejudice in many different ways today. For example, you can walk into the lunchroom and see different cliques at different tables and not socializing with anyone but the people at their tables. Even in highschool, cheerleaders, and football players tend to only talk to their group of friends. There are teachers that try to mix it up by pairing popular kids with unpopular kids, but even that doesn t always work. In The Outsiders, The Greasers are very prejudice against the Socs, The Greasers live on the East side and don t have a lot of money. The Socs, on the other hand, live on the West side and have a lot of money and have anything they could ever ask for. The Socs think The Greasers are gross and poor kids and The Greasers think that The Socs are rich and super snobby kids. The Greasers and Socs think this about each other because they have never really had the chance to get to know each other, so the Greasers just assume that all of the Socs are bad and only like to jump people. Strengths And Weaknesses Of Forensic Science Forensic science is a multidisciplinary subject utilized for looking at wrongdoing s and social event confirmation to be utilized as a part of arraignment of guilty parties in a courtroom. Obviously, a qualitative identification must precede any attempt at quantitation, for little value is served by attempting to quantitate a material without first determining its identity (Saferstein, 2010, p.205). A quantitative measurement is normally expert by exact estimation of a solitary property of the material. A qualitative analysis of a material requires the determination of numerous properties using a variety of analytical techniques (Saferstein, 2010, p.123). When processing both qualitative and quantitative analysis of physical evidence you want to make sure you first identify and then classify the type of physical evidence. Qualitative analysis considers fine qualifications to be drawn because it is not important to shoehorn the information into a limited number of groupings. The primary weakness of Qualitative analysis is to deal with corpus investigation is that their discoveries cannot be stretched out to more extensive populaces with a similar level of sureness that quantitative analysis can. The author begins by stating all we need is fourteen lines causing the reader to believe the poem is, in fact, a sonnet ( Sonnet 1). After reading through, however, the conclusion can be made that the author does not follow many of the various rules associated with writing a sonnet. For instance, the rhyme scheme of this poem is not that of a sonnet at all. Normally, a Petrarchan sonnet would follow an a b b a, a b b a, and so on; however, the author instead strays from the expected and has very little, if any, rhyming throughout the entire piece. The only time any rhyme is seen is for the few slant rhymes the author includes and even those do not contribute to making it a true sonnet. Another missing aspect of sonnet writing is iambic pentameter. All of the lines, except the last, do not meet the guidelines of ten syllables, but why? Since this is the ending of the poem and the speaker mentions to blowout the candle maybe they are giving up on their rant ( Sonnet 14). Or it possibly could be to differentiate from the rest of the poem and actually create a suitable line. In Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird She goes into great detail on many aspects of the time. The reason for this amount of detail is to help move the story along in the book. This is due to the fact that Maycomb is not only a town with interesting stories, but is also a town that is setup to motivate some actions in the novel. There are many examples of this happening, and the main three that I will be discussing in this writing are how the events and ideas of the time affect the story, how the people of the time have affected the story, and finally to describe the aftermath... He told the court that Tom Robinson raped his daughter, Mayella Ewell, and when Atticus defended Tom Robinson in this case, Bob Ewell was the one who reacted most negatively towards Atticus, even to the point to attack Atticus children. Atticus on the other hand, can be seen as the closest to a protagonist there is in the story. This is due to the fact that he is not racist, and truly believes in justice and fairness, which can be seen when he defended Tom Robinson. He caused many events in the story. One is how people reacted to him. They treated him very unfairly, and in Bob Ewell s case, caused him to harass, threaten, and attack children. He also made the jury discuss a lot longer for the case then normal for a black case. The final person that affects the story of this novel the most is Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a good hearted black man, that was treated very unfairly due to the prejudice of that time. He was convicted on the charge of raping Mayella Ewell, despite the bad evidence to support this claim, and then later he was shot and killed when he tried to escape the confines he was placed into. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Peggy Post, of the Emily Post etiquette family, notes that more and more men are attending the bridal shows she hosts around the country, and they re showing both sense and sensibility. The reason for the change can easily be traced to economics: Because it costs a bundle to get married, more grooms and their families are sharing the bill rather than have it all fall on the bride s family s shoulders. Coupled with this is the fact that men are marrying later, so it s more likely they have jobs that allow them to help pay the costs. These grooms aren t just pulling out their credit cards and nodding, Yes, honey, anything you want, says Post. They re keeping close tabs on where the money is going.
