2. What is your favourite music
genre and why?
• My favourite music genre is R&B music. R&B (Rhythm and
Blues) is a popular African-American genre of music which
emerged around the 1940’s. I really like R&B music because of
its smooth and jazz rhythm highlighted by a strong insistent
beat. I like R&B because it is a culmination of different genres
of music, especially gospel, rock ‘n’ roll, soul and electric
blues.
3. What is your favourite music
genre and why?
• I also like it because, growing up African American music was
predominant in my household. My first introduction to music
was listening to gospel music on vinyl records. I find that the
rhythm in R&B can either be upbeat or relaxing and soft;
which make it a vast genre of music encompassing different
emotions and moods.
4. Who are some of your favourite
artists/bands and why?
• I have many favourite R&B artists, I especially like them
because of their style and lyrics. I like them also because their
music styles and lyrical messages are diverse and also because
I find them extremely talented with their voices and
songwriting skills.
• Some of my favourite artists are Stevie Wonder, Michael
Jackson, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, R. Kelly,
Whitney Houston, TLC, Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, Prince,
Marvin Gaye, Aaliyah and Mary J. Blige.
5. Do you own any of their albums?
• I used to own the CD’s of many of these artists
especially, when listening to music was done through
stereos. However now I have their albums and songs
on my phone and Itunes library, because it is a more
convenient way of having their music without carrying
many CD’s. I sometimes buy their albums in CD’s and
play them in the car stereo.
6. What do you like about these
artists?
• I like these artists because I find their music captivating and
very catchy. One of the main reasons I like their music is
because their lyrics carry strong messages and are moving. I
also appreciate artists that write and produce their own music
such as Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey because it shows
their level of talent and their passion for the music.
7. How did you find out about
them?
• Because my family is very musical I found out about most of
these artists through word of mouth and by singing their
songs with my parents when I was a child. Otherwise, I found
out about most of these artists by watching MTV when I was a
child and watching their music videos.
8. Have you ever seen them live?
• Unfortunately, I have never seen any of my favourite artists
live. I would love to see them live. However a few years ago in
2009 I had tickets to see Michael Jackson in concert for his
final tour “This Is It”, sadly he passed away just before his tour
began. I do hope I will go to some of my favourite artists
concert’s in the future.
9. What are your thoughts about
their music videos?
• I like their music videos because I find them very creative and
not to busy. Most R&B music videos are small and do not
depend on big shock factors like in pop music videos;
therefore the style of the videos are simple but well refined. I
also like the variety in the music videos I like the simple music
videos of Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and
also on the more spectacular big budget music videos of
Michael Jackson and Beyonce.
10. Do they have websites?
• All the artists that I like have websites, some are much more
current whilst others are limited in information, like for the
group TLC who haven’t made any recent music. The website
design reflects the style of the artist in order to promote their
image.
11. What do you think about their
ideologies as a band/artist?
• I really like the artists and groups that I chose and their ideologies. I
appreciate their star image and enjoy watching their glamorous lives
however their ideology is similar to mine and their music always has
a messaged being conveyed. Additionally, they use their influence as
artists to discuss social change and problems in society; for example
the group TLC used to talk about safe sex in their music videos and
Michael Jackson talked about equality and poverty in his music. I
like this because they recognise their influence and power in the
world and try to do good by it. Lastly, I think that they work
extremely hard to entertain their audiences and I really like strong
work ethics, which these artists show.
12. My favourite music videos
• Beyonce – Me, Myself and I
• Mariah Carey – Honey
• Michael Jackson – Remember the Time
• En Vogue – My Lovin (You’re Never Gonna Get It)
• Toni Braxton – He Wasn’t Man Enough for Me
