Chaucer s Ransom
Geoffrey Chaucer
Geoffrey Chaucer for some reason they do not know what year he was born, but they think that
he was born during 1340 through 1344. His dad was a deputy to the king s butler so Geoffrey had
some connections high up. That is were he got some of his jobs in his early life.
He joined the Hundred Years War in 1359 on the English s side when they invaded France, but
he was taken prisoner. In 1360, King Edward the Third paid his ransom. A couple years later in
1366 to be exact, he got married. The woman he married was actually a lady in waiting to marry
King Edward the Third , her name was Philipa de Roet. The king gave Chaucer a life pension in
1367. Chaucer made couple of trips to Italy from 1372 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Around 1374, began the period of Chaucer s Italian influence. In that time he wrote more poems
such as, he wrote Anelida and Arcite in 1379 and he also wrote Parlement of Foules in 1382 also
he wrote Troilus and Criseyde in 1385. In 1386 he moved to Kent and he was elected a justice of
the peace and in the Parliament. In 1837 his wife, Philipa de Roet, sadly passed away. They say
that his artistic maturity started when he wrote the General Prologue to the Canterbury Tales. Ralph
Waldo Emerson said in his poem The Poet that Chaucer along with a long list of other poets that
they obviously have no limits except for limits of their life time, and resemble a mirror carried
through the streets, ready to render an image of every created thing.
Chaucer remained Clerk of Works of the Palace of Westminster until less than a year before his
death. In the garden of the Lady Chapel of Westminster Abbey, he leased a tenement there. He
passed away on October 25, 1400. He was buried in the chapel of St. Benedict near the entrance in
the South Transept. That area where he was was known as the Poets Corner. In 1556 a monument
was built for Geoffrey

The Importance Of Creating A Business Website
Creating a business website can play a huge impact on your business. It helps establish the
background of your business. By having a secured website it shows people the kind of business it
presents to its customers. In this paper it will present the different ways to create a successful
business website.
First thing you want to do when creating a business is create a domain name. A domain name is the
name of the website. It ranges from 10 to 12 dollars to maintain the domain name every year. Next
the business should get a personalized business email, just in case people want to come in contact
with the business. Secure a business email and not a personal email for the business. Then next you
want to choose a website builder to get the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also make navigation through the website easy. Make navigation clear and simple on every page
(Fadeyev 2008).
A strategy to take mind of when creating a business website is to think of your competitors who
sell or do the same thing as the business. A strategy would be is to make yourself different than
other competitors, because 9 times out of 10 the customer is going to go to the business website
that offers more and is different. Being different is the key when creating a website because being
different the business can offer more value than its competitors (Fadeyev 2008).
Another Strategy for creating a business website is to choose a template and plugins for your
website. The business should choose a certain software for the website and a host for the website.
Choosing a template for the website will give your website the way the business want it to feel.
Next thing to do in order to have a successful business website is organize your website.
Organizing your website includes the logo usage, and how other visual effects are displayed on the
website feature. The business should organize and set the structure of information on your website
to give you good flexibility. Another way to have a successful website is to have good content. The
content should be appealing to the visitors and have the right kind of information about the

Theory Of Morality As A System Of Hypothetical Imperatives...
Circular Reasoning in Foot s Moral System
In Morality as a System of Hypothetical Imperatives , Philippa Foot argues against Immanuel Kant,
that morality exists in hypothetical imperatives rather than categorical imperatives. For Kant,
categorical imperatives alone serve as moral commands, and it would be impossible for a moral
system to be based on hypothetical imperatives because such imperatives serve as means to ends
and result from maxims that cannot be universalized into perfect duties. Despite this, Foot holds
that acting on many hypothetical imperatives can be morally praiseworthy and can even serve as
the basis of moral judgments. Although I agree with Foot that hypothetical imperatives can have
moral worth, in this paper, I will argue that a morality based on the purposes that hypothetical
imperatives are directed toward appears to be circular. To do this, I will explain Foot s theory of
how morality is known and binds. Then, I will argue that this theory is insufficient to explain the
moral purpose that hypothetical imperatives must be directed toward, thus begging the question of
what is the moral basis of the purpose directed toward in the hypothetical imperative.
To base morality on a system of hypothetical imperatives, Foot begins by explaining Kant s
distinction between hypothetical and categorical imperatives. According to Kant, a hypothetical
imperative can be contrasted with a categorical imperative in that it commands an action that is
good to some

Interpersonal Attraction
Interpersonal attraction can be defined as how and what attracts us to individuals. As a college
student, I am constantly judging people by the first moment I meet them because I am frequently
searching for friends and relations in my life. What sparked my interest to research this topic was
my fondness for the opposite sex. I was curious as to what attracted to me to certain men and not
others. Initially, I believed I was drawn solely to men from a physical attraction in an original
engagement, but I found that there is more to this matter. Although physicality is a large degree of
interpersonal attraction, research proves that there are several other determining factors playing a
part in attraction on first encounters. The most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the atmosphere of technology, the ability to contact more people has dramatically increased,
but attraction is still hard to form if one has never met them (Johnson, 2000). The almighty
Facebook.com fanatics like myself have over a hundred friends, but my real friends that have
this global college networking, are the people I am in close physical proximity to; I think it is
hard to have a true attraction to people through a photo and email since it is not in physical
closeness and it seems unrealistic. A picture displayed online is not nearly as strong as actual
physical contingence. Accordingly, the possibility of attraction on first encounters drastically
increases if individuals are in close proximity to each other. People in close proximity
subsequentially increase their familiarity to individuals. Familiar people are more likely to be
attractive because they are judged to be safe, least likely to cause harm, and inexpensive in time
and effort. Initial appeal is most highly prominent when one is easy to physically approach
(Kazdin, 2000). The people I see on Arcadia s college campus, I expect to be harmless and
amenable for the reason of familiarity. To exemplify this, the exposure effect states that the more
exposure to a stimulus, the more apt we are to like them; the more times I see someone at college,

The Effect Of Osmosis On O Shelled Chicken Eggs On...
Abstract: The purpose to this experiment was to study the effect of osmosis in de shelled chicken
eggs in different percentages of sucrose solutions. Osmosis is the process, in which, water moves
across a differentially permeable membrane. The eggs were soaked in vinegar to remove the
outside hard shell but still leave the egg in its membrane. By placing the six de shelled in different
sucrose solutions, we tested the rate of osmosis. The eggs were placed in the solutions for an hour
and weighed in fifteen minute intervals. Then, each weight was recorded and graphed. The results
showed that the egg in the water solutiongained the most weigh and the only other egg that gained a
little weight was the one in the 10% solution. All the other eggs in the different solutions lost
weight, even the unknown solution. According to the results the egg that was in the distilled water
solution gained weight because it is the hypertonic solution. All the other eggs lost weight because
they were placed in hypotonic solutions with different concentrations of sucrose. The egg that was
placed in the higher concentrationof sucrose lost the most weight. So, the higher the concentration
of sucrose, the more water the egg lost.
Introduction:
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low
concentration until equilibrium is reached. Osmosis, however, is the movement of water according
to its own concentration gradient across a selectively

Advantages Of Commuting
Many people must or choose to commute to school on a weekly basis for a variety of reasons.
Before the school year begins, students must make the choice of whether or not they want to live
on campus or commute. Commuting does not necessarily have to do with going to school, but
commuting is commonly seen for going to school or work. I had to decide whether or not to
commute before my Fall semester started, and picking was a tough choice because I live quite far
from the college campus; however, I chose to commute for various reasons and it was the right
decision. People who commute far distances, usually complain about the annoyances that come
with commuting, and some of these people will choose to move closer even though they were
originally at driving distance; however, most people who commute chose to continue commuting
for as long as possible anyways. Dorming and living on campus is much more convenient, but
commuting to college, if possible, is much better since commuting is cheaper, anyone can do it,
family reasons, and of course much more comfortable. Commuting may be tough in the morning
since a commuter must wake up, and begin traveling early, but at the end of the year a commuter
would save much more money. Most people choose to commute because of money and Free
housing, food and laundry. Living at home means you save a lot of money, which can help you
down the line when you want to move out on your own (Callahan, Confessions of a College
Commuter.). Callahan

Mr Collins Pride And Prejudice Humor Essay
In Pride and Prejudice, humor is used to highlight absurd situations and social blunders. Austen
uses humor as a tool to show the readers what behavior is acceptable and what is not. Behaving
above your rank is one of these social faux pas. Mr. Collins, Sir William Lucas, and Caroline
Bingley are all examples of how not to act. Mr. Collins is constantly trying to improve his social
situation by using his connection to Lady Catherine, Sir William takes himself too seriously, and
Caroline always tries to elevate herself above Elizabeth, even though they are of the same station.
The characters who provide the most humor throughout the book are the ones who act higher in
status than they are in reality. Mr. Collins provides a great deal of humor... Show more content on

Whenever Darcy is around, she is by his side, trying to gain his affections. Elizabeth remarks that
the perpetual commendations of the lady and Darcy s perfect unconcern... formed a curious
dialogue (31). Caroline s actions have the opposite effect intended, as Darcy hardly replies to her.
There is a complete contrast between them Caroline is completely engaged in the conversation,
while Darcy is not paying any attention. Her attempts to draw his attention to her are funny
because they are met with such indifference. Caroline s increasing desperation also contributes to
the humor of her character. She is constantly trying to highlight her own supposed superiority by
referencing Elizabeth s relations and making disparaging comments about her appearance. When
they meet Elizabeth during her trip with the Gardiners, Caroline remarks that she looks very ill
and that she is grown so brown and coarse (181). Darcy replies that he believes Elizabeth to be the
handsomest woman of his acquaintance and then leaves. Caroline has finally forced him to say
what gave no one any pain but herself (181). Instead of diminishing his feelings for Elizabeth,
Caroline has only succeeded in alienating Darcy. Her attempts to improve her social status have
completely backfired. This irony, as well as the juxtaposition between Caroline and Darcy during
their interactions, produces the

New Towns, UDC s and Enterprise Zones
New Towns and UDC s
a) New Towns: Positives?
They bring employment to the area with new businesses.
They disperse the populations of large cities.
Good rail and road links close by to access the larger cities for commuters.
Higher employment rates in a lot of new towns due to industries setting up nearby.
Good public transport around the town.
Lots of green space in and around the town.
Generally lots of affordable housing.
There is a country feel whilst still being in a larger town.
b) New Towns: Negatives?
The people moving to new towns are generally between the ages of twenty and forty. There are
lots of zero to five year old children and this creates a population bulge. Lots of primary and
secondary schools with empty classrooms.
They disrupt the social sides of families. Parents and family being left behind.
The social mix is very similar. Houses are the same price so people of the same income bracket and
social background live in the towns.
They are very unattractive places to live.
The town centres can be very congested.
Pockets of depravation and inequality. Lack of community feel.
Generally less character in the towns and much less history.
c) Weigh up the positives and negatives of the New Townstrategy in your own opinion, was it
successful? (approx. 100 words)
I believe they have worked in the newer towns built in the second and third wave of the movement
as they have learned from a lot of their mistakes. They have succeeded in

Abstract
This essay will investigate the Austrian Energy Drink Company RedBull by analyzing the energy
drink market and determining where RedBull is positioned. I will further investigate and answer
the question: Should Red Bull continue with its marketing strategy in the United States to maintain
its market share in the rapidly growing energy drink market?
In this investigation I have used a SWOT ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fig.5 Red Bull US Sales Growth 2010 2013
The sales growth demonstrated above, however, is driven by higher consumer demand and
consumption of energy drinks as seen in Fig.2. Strong product awareness has been already
established in the United States and Red Bull has acquired an extensive and loyal consumer base
over the past years.
After analyzing the energy drink market, I came to the conclusion that Red Bull should try to
decrease its price in order to maintain the rising star position in the Boston Consulting Matrix in
which it currently is placed. New Product Development (NPD) is also crucial in order to compete
in the growing energy drink market in the United States.
Red Bull s Marketing Mix
Red Bull s marketing mix seems to harmonize based on its success. Especially the use of
sponsorship marketing was taken to the next level by the Red Bull marketing team. Today it is
almost hard to think of a sport that Red Bull does not sponsor. Their logo appears on motorbikes,
wakeboards, snowboards, formula1 cars, soccer jerseys and even high tech space suits designed for
jumping from the edge of the stratosphere. They even organize a quirky competition of homemade
flying machines to support their proposition Red Bull gives you

China s Long Standing Battle Against Air Pollution
Smoggy sky: China s long standing battle against air pollution
Smog has been spreading rapidly in China since 2013 with an increased number of haze days,
which seriously affected residents daily life. Smog as an environmental problem has become a
major social concern and the government has promulgated a number of policies and governance
strategies. In June 2013, the State Council carried on the ten air pollution control measures and
strived to practice the code of conduct share breath and struggle . Subsequently, the State Council
promulgated the Air Pollution Control Action Plan ; the provinces and municipalities published the

of these policies not only indicates that China urgently needs to solve the haze problem, but also

efforts to solve the air pollution including haze problem, and there are some results. However,
consecutive smoggy skies and continuous spread across the country also show that for China air
pollution governance will be a long battle.
If we want to govern the smoggy sky, we need to know what the smog is at first. Smog is a type of
air pollutant. The word smog was coined in the early 20th century as a portmanteau of the words
smoke kind of fog to refer to smoky fog. A similar and severe environmental issue in London from

Chapter I. THEORETICAL ASPECT OF USING VISUAL MATERIAL IN TEACHING
ENGLISH 1.1. The importance of using visual aids in teaching English Nowadays, whereever
you go around the world you can find a certain people who can communicate with English
Language. Because of globalization and other reasons English is going to be the language of the
world. Apart from the use of English as their mother tongue in some countries there are a number
of countries who can teach English as Second Language or Foreign Language. Hence, in order to
use English Language more effectively and efficiently having rich knowledge of vocabulary is
crucial. In most cases you can find communication break down when the students at school are not
able to recall the appropriate word for the right situation of interaction. So in order to overcome this
and similar problems the use of visual materials in teaching English Language vocabulary is
mandatory. The use of visual materials makes the meaning of the words memorable and long
lasting in students mind. Visual Education is not new. It has years of research back of it. A Dutch
Humanist theologist and writer Erasmus (1466 1536) disclosed memorization as a technique of
learning and advocated that the children should learn through the aids of pictures or other visuals.
While John Amos Comenius (1592 1670) prepared a book known as Orbis Sensilium Pictus (the

Nobody thought we could ever be able to see something so incredibly small to properly observe
and therefore prove that germs exist. Nowadays, the fact that germs exist is common knowledge
and anybody that doesn t believe that germs exist, and cause illness, might get some funny looks.
(Transition: Finally, let us explore how the Scientific Method is applicable to daily life.)
IV. Fourth Main Point: The Scientific Method can be used in daily life to improve your everyday
problem solving.
A.Subpoint: Using the Scientific Method in daily life is less structured because, for the most part,
you don t have to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, your results to others.
B.Subpoint: The Scientific Method in general use doesn t require consist consideration of each
step, expect maybe in extreme and extra complex situation, but there isn t all that much harm in
glancing over a step.
Example: Deducting the problem with your overheating tracker/car and using the Scientific Method
to draw conclusions, test them, and get results. If you test something and your car continues to
overheat then you ve concluded that it was not the issue. You would then repeat the same process
until you ve reached your solution.

Using A Microscope And View Living Cells
Using a microscope to view living cells
Introduction
Living cells are the most basic unit of life, however, they are impossible to see without the
magnification of a microscope. There are different types of microscopes with alterations to serve a
specific function, but the general use is the same. It is a tool invented with a curved lense that
magnifies things that cannot be seen with the naked eye. A microscopecan be used to see many
things, in this particular lab they were used to observe cells of different organisms. We began by
looking at a few sample slides of euglena, salmonella, and lilium and recording our observations.
Then we created the slides ourselves with living matter. The first set of cells that we looked at
were onion cells, which we looked at by gathering a sample of onion epidermis from one of the
onion s layers and creating a slide to be placed on the stage of the microscope. Next, we took a
look at human cheek cells by obtaining a sample and again creating a slide by swabbing the inside
of a mouth with a toothpick. Finally, we looked at pond water by creating a slide with a small
amount that was collected in a dropper.
Purpose
The purpose of this lab was to gain more knowledge on the use of lab equipment, focusing
principally on the microscope by observing a variety of cells underneath its magnifying lense at
different levels of objective power and recording those observations.

Oh, to scratch that itch, eh? Well, Montag, take my word for it, I ve had to read a few in my
time, to know what I was about, and the books say nothing! Nothing you can teach or believe. ...
You come away lost. (Bradbury 59) He explains that the words in books do not seem to be of any
value, and that reading them gives the reader not a speck of insight into any aspect of life. In
this society, his words ring true for almost everyone, except those who managed to learn before
the schools shut down and those who yearned to understand what books say. Furthermore,
Beatty s attempts to force Montag into the mold of this society pushes the man to search for
wisdom in the depths of literature. Beatty spurs Montag to delve into the world of literature. He
dares the man to defy him in an almost mocking tone such as here: We d certainly miss you if
you didn t show. (60) Here he implies that if Montag does not show up to burn his book, it will
not be good news for him. Beatty is a strict man always following and enforcing the rules, seldom
deviating from them, and is a man of his word. He knows Montag is hiding something, which he
intuitively guesses is a book, and he promises indirectly that he will be back to burn down the
man s house if he does not bring it in within twenty four hours. Afraid of losing his one chance of

The American Automotive Industry Incurred A Major Crisis
Between 2008 and 2009, the American automotive industry incurred a major crisis, on the heels
of the housing market collapse occurring in 2007 (Klier Ribenstein, 2013). General Motors was

bankruptcy and restructure the company was an excellent one because studies have shown that
restructuring of the internal workings of an organization increases both the efficiency of the
company and its value to the stockholders (Brickley Van Drunen, 1990). The positive effects of
this restructuring is evidenced by the ability of the government to successfully sale the entirety

would propose for General Motors to undergo: a statistical analysis, a consumer survey, and a
dealership survey. The statistical analysis would study the past and

The World Of The European Union
Ava Dodge
Germany
Germany, now one of the most powerful states in the European Union, is most broadly defined as a
representative democracy. Citizens vote on the upper legislature, lower legislature, and state
representatives, known as the Bundestag, Bundesrat, and Länder respectively. The Bundestag
goes on to elect a leader or chancellor. This leader has less independent authority than the president
of the United States or the British Prime Minister, and is very dependent on parliamentary
agreement to pass laws. Thus, the German government would more specifically be labeled a
parliamentary republic. A parliamentary republic is a form of government in which the
parliamentary legislature (elected by the people) has more power than the head of state. Germany
also has a federal style government, consisting of the central government and sixteen separate
states that share sovereignty of the region. However, aside from the categories of education,
internal policing, and local government, the federal government carries a vast majority of the
power. The individual states are represented at the national level through the Bundesrat. The other
legislative body, the Bundestag, is decided by a vote that includes both district and party
representatives. This is a combination of closed list proportional representation and district
representation. More specifically, each district gets a seat, and any discrepancy in the percentage of
district seats a party receives and the percentage of

Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone
Africa in Cinema Final Paper Professor Rice May 2010 Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone This
semester, the topic of Child Soldiers presented a very interesting dilemma that several countries
in Africa continue to face today. Sierra Leone, in particular, has struck an interest because of the
many films and readings that try to depict this story of the civil war. In class, we have viewed
two films representing the problems with child soldiers in Sierra Leone which include films titled
Blood Diamond and Ezra. Both films represent opposite sides of the spectrum, as Blood Diamond
shows the Western view of child soldiers and Ezra represents the first African view of child

Their minds are controlled by the RUF and if they did not comply with the orders of the
organization they were immediately killed. This type of life is so unimaginable but still
continues as we speak. In Blood Diamond, the western view of this miserable story of Sierra
Leone is depicted. Having viewed the film several times I now understand the real reason behind
the film. Because it is in a western, Hollywood view, the film can only keep the attention of the
viewers if there is some kind of white influence. With that said, even though the story of child
soldiers is what is meant to be depicted, the love story between a South African Journalist and an
American diamond smuggler is what is represented instead. Instead of focusing on the true
matter at hand, Hollywood insists on using the talents of Leonardo Di Caprio to misrepresent
the issues over diamonds in Sierra Leone. In the film, it is misleading to see how savage like the
children of Sierra Leone are made out to be. The story almost seemed too good to be true in the
film and to anyone who does not know much about the situation in Sierra Leone it may have
been a great film. In my opinion it was a very sad excuse for a film and the film in every way used
the situation in Sierra Leone as an advantage to the boost of some of Hollywood s best actors
careers. The other film viewed in class entitled Ezra depicted the story of child soldiers from an

Totem By Thomas King Summary
Totem by Thomas King is a satirical short story about the issues in our country regarding
aboriginals and their rights. He uses humour and allegory to open canadian s eyes to the more
serious issues that we are faced with. The story is set in a Southwest Alberta Art Gallery and
Prairie Museum. A place built by white men and representing in a sense, white man s canada. King
uses the perspective of the museum staff, in order to see how they view and try to deal with the
totem problem. from the perspective of the staff, this is an issue of tolerance. obviously, the
aboriginals don t want to be tolerated, they want to be respected and treated as equals. King uses a
strong sense of humour to emphasize the ridiculousness of that ideology. Using satirical humour in
my opinion, is more appropriate than taking the issue of tolerance seriously.

undocumented immigrant men living and working in the Chicago area. These men have been
called the Lions by the author because they all originate from the same city in Mexico called
Le?n. These men differ meaningfully in their beliefs, experiences, and plans for the future, but
they also have important things in common. They are friends, and in some cases brothers and
cousins, who share the reputation of being ?illegal aliens? and the dignity of being hard workers
and family men. Their culture guides them through many different social settings, and each man
has a different perspective. The most important thing when coming to the Unites states is that
first you need to find a job. All of the men work low paying jobs because they are illegal, but the
way they work is as if they are doing the most important job on the planet. There willingness to
work is said to be the most cultural value that they have. They demonstrate their willingness to
work by performing extra work without complaint and with haste. The workers even have a name
for this performance ?ech?ndole ganas? which means to giving it your all, working hard or a

This puts them at a disadvantage, when compared to the students who go to some good private
schools. It s sad to have to put it that way but it s the truth. The socioeconomic status of the parent
has a lot to do with this. APA states Low SES and its correlates, such as lower education, poverty,
and poor health, ultimately affect our society as a whole, in particular, America s children. Children
in the United States face one of the highest rates of poverty within the industrialized world. If a
parent spends hours at work to make ends meet then that takes away from parent involvement in
home assignments. The parents also influence on the attitude the child brings to school and how
important school is to the student. The values of school start at home, if a parent doesn t believe
that school is important factor in an adult s life then that rubs off on the student, they carry that
same attitude about school.
Economic hardships manifest a number of challenges. From having a stable home, basic needs to
medical care, all these things create challenges for students and teachers as well. This goes to show
how easily students who come from poverty have a higher chance of not finishing school and
facing many obstacles while in school making it so much more difficult for them.

In 1995, I decided to volunteer as a missionary for my church. On the application form, there was

of speech that were giving me so much trouble, look them up in reference grammars, and figure
out once and for all how to use them like a native Chinese person. It was this search that raised the
questions that I will attempt to answer in this paper.
The part of Chinese I chose to examine for this paper is the perfective aspect (PRV) le particle. I

mainly on the theories and ideas of the authors of these analyses, it seemed that a survey of
native Chinese speakers would provide a good standard by which to judge these theories. Li and

Major General Sherman Outline
On November 15, 1864, Major General William T. Sherman received direct orders from president
Abraham Lincoln to a very rare but devastating tactic. Lincoln ordered General Sherman to march
his troops from Atlanta, Georgia to Savannah, Georgia. The total distance the army covered was
nearly 400 miles from city to city. The trek was long and difficult for the soldiers but was even
worse for any family who lived in their path. The purpose of this march was to destroy Confederate
supply lines and split the South in two halves. General Sherman used the tactic which earned the
name scorched earth due to the harsh methods used. Anywhere the 60,000 man army traveled, they
destroyed and burned any obstacle that they encountered, whether it be travelers, families, or even
entire towns. Lincoln knew this would strike terror into the Confederate side and decrease their
population by thousands. The total fatality count is undetermined because of the mass slaughtering

Throughout the developing stages of the United states, many people played very key parts in
their way of dealing with industrialization and helping our country grow. Andrew Carnegie is the
man known for taking over the steel industry. Carnegie had done his research and planning to try
to take over the steel industry. Rockefeller is another big name that will be remembered as the
man who took over the oil industry. Rockefeller was a man of his patience and wisdom to force
his competition out of business instead of taking over. Now, Rockefeller and Carnegie are two

Captains of Industry seem to be the most fitting for these two industrializers since they both were

Mary Shelley s Life And Life

Shelley s father, William Godwin, encouraged both Mary and Fanny to read and write from a

The next largest portion at almost 10% of the budget is allotted to Criminal Justice. In the state of
Georgia we have 159 state funded prisons that house over 57,000 inmates (Ga Prison Fact Sheet).
This also includes over 13,000 state employees that run these facilities (AJC Prison). Each inmate
takes approximately $51 a day. This includes housing, meals and general day to day activities (Ga

the payments of the principal and interest of any general or long term obligation that the state has
accrued. This amount is over $64 million in 2012. Lastly, the fifth largest budget allocation is for
transportation. Transportation encompasses road repair, improving the efficiency of the movement
of goods, construction of new roads and Highways and reducing congestion within the state. Along
with these services, the salaries and benefits of their employees are figured into this section of the

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig s disease, is a disease of the
nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. Jean Marie Charcot
was the first to recognize ALS as a distinct neurological disease with its own unique pathology. In
ALS, nerve cells degenerate and deteriorate, and are unable to transmit messages to muscles. In
around 90% of the cases of ALS, the cause remains unknown. Studies have concentrated on the
responsibility of glutamate in motor neuron degeneration. Glutamate is one of several
neurotransmitters in the brain. While there is no known cure for ALS, strides in medicine have
allowed for the development of a wide variety of medications to treat the various... Show more

The predicament of the patient gradually declines. Once the disease progresses to the stage where
muscles in the chest area stop working, it grows increasing difficult or nearly impossible to breath.
History of ALS
Jean Marie Charcot was the first to recognize ALS as a distinct neurological disease with its own
unique pathology (Kumar, Aslinia, Yale, and Mazza 2011). Studies conducted from 1865 to 1869
by Charcot and his colleague Joffroy found that lesions in the interior of the lateral column in the
spinal cord gave rise to chronic progressive paralysis and contractures (no atrophy of muscles),
while lesions of the anterior horn of the spinal cord resulted in paralysis devoid of contractures
(with atrophy of muscles). These discoveries reinforced Charcot s hypothesis, at the time, was that
the motor component of the spinal cord contained a two part system, and that the location of the
lesion results in a varying clinical presentation. Charcot did not propose the term amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis until 1874 when his lectures were accumulated into a compilation of his research
entitled Oeuvres Completes . In many parts of the world, ALS is still known as Charcot s disease.
While numerous molecular and genetic discoveries have allowed for a greater understanding of this
disease, his innovative descriptions of the associated clinical and

The Judiciary And The Federal Budget
Poorly crafted statues almost always require future revision, sometimes in another moment of
crisis. This type of law making tends to increase the power of executive agencies as well as the
courts. Because the judiciary is forced to clarify legislation, to rule on its details and apply
legislation to uncertain situations, vague legislationends up allocating substantial power to the
judiciary. Imprecise and open ended statues often increase to power of executive agencies, too.
Such agencies are given broad mandates without much guidance or oversight.
Decades ago, the US Congress would assign specific priorities and focuses to federal agencies
when approving the yearly federal budget. This guidance is especially important because the
legislature exerts little other control over independent agencies, like the Federal Trade Commission
or the Federal Communications Commission. Now, because the federal budget is so often approved
during crisis conditions (and sometimes merely extends the previous year s budget into the next),
Congress offers little guidance to independent agencies. This enhances the power of independent
agencies while leaving them without guidance. Unger s preferred mode of organizing politics
would entail a substantial increase to the last minute compromises and revisions that cause such
confusion.
The courts, too, will be called upon to specify legislative details, meaning, and reach of legislation.
Many scholars in the legal realism camp

Philosophy of Education Essay
Philosophy of Education
One of the most privileged professions in the world today is teaching. Teachers can influence the
youth of a culture in a way no one else can. Teachers have the honorable responsibility of education.
Students develop mentally, socially, and ethically within the realm of academic education. While in
this critical stage of development, students are given the laboratory of the classroom to test
themselves in ways that are more risky after graduation. Teachers play a crucial rolein this
laboratory. I believe that the most important way I can serve my students while fulfilling this role is
to have positive expectations, to continually reflect on my teaching habits and performance, and to

I will treat these students as if they will eventually change perspectives, even if they never do.
Treating all students with respect, I believe that having high expectations and recognizing each
student s positive potential will contribute greatly to the students I teach.
My performance as a teacher is also very important. I believe in continually reflecting on my
teaching practices and improving them as I accommodate to each new class. My teaching habits,
such as organization, consistency, and effective classroom management, will always need to be
revised and improved to create the best classroom learning environment. Meeting national, state,
regional, and school academic standards are also very important to me. As an employee of the
state, I feel obligated to do my best to teach the required knowledge effectively, through creative
activities that are accommodating to all learners. I hold a very high standard for myself
professionally, and hope to constantly improve my teaching strategies through reflection.
Through literature, students can be empowered with the knowledge that no one person could teach
them. Knowledge gained through literature not only prepares students to live in a world where
reading and writing proficiency are required for success, but also helps students mature emotionally,
mentally, and socially. Through the middle and high school years, students

Democracy In South Africa Essay
Democracy and The ANC
We the people of South Africa, recognise the injustices of our past;
Honour those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land;
Respect those who have worked to build and develop our country; and
Believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity.
We therefore, through our freely elected representatives, adopt this constitution as the supreme law
of the Republic... (Preamble to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996).
South Africa s past is one that is rooted in inequalities and injustices; racism and subjugation. Our
Constitution was promulgated into law by South Africa s first democratically elected President,
Nelson Mandela, twenty years ago in 1996.
It is considered to be a Constitution second to none in the world. Our Bill of Rights, which was
drafted taking very careful consideration of our country s painful non democratic history, is widely
regarded as a document that is a global standard of human rights. The South African constitution
was drawn up through an extensive multi party negotiation process. The result of this process was a
cohesive, highly influential document. Initially declared as our country s Interim Constitution in
1993, this document allowed for all South Africans to make the transition from apartheid to
democracy. Post the country s watershed democratic elections in April 1994, the Interim
Constitution was taken through a further consultative process involving the public

Analysis Of Joe Garland s In The Mood
The Jazz era was a time period in which the definition of music began to diverge; composers were
able to express themselves in a sense that was soulful and vibrant, where any door of possibility
became obtainable. In The Mood was a piece by Joe Garland composed in the 1930 s during the
swing era. The iconic Jazznumber had been arranged by many artists; however, it was not until
Glenn Millerorchestrated this piece so perceptively that In The Mood became so well renowned.
It was in 1939 when Miller seamlessly altered the Jazz piece that In The Mood was sent to number
1 on the U.S. charts for 13 weeks in 1940. It can be stated that Glenn Miller thoughtfully
manipulated In The Mood in the swing style that has in effect redefined this... Show more content

Even through imitating the form, melody and rhythm, the piece still transformed into a diverse jazz
piece in comparison to the original. Once more, it is expressed that Glenn Miller thoughtfully
manipulated In The Mood that has in effect redefined this piece; this is proven through the
exploration of three key terminologies: Assimilate, Innovate and Imitate. Fundamentally, Jazz was a
powerful era that essentially changed the notions of music; Glenn Miller successfully explored this
convention and reformed In The Mood that completely altered its definition as a Jazz

Naturalism in Miss Julie Essay
Naturalism in Miss Julie
Writers involved in the naturalist movement believed that actors lines should be spoken naturally,
and that mechanical movements, vocal effects, and irrational gestures should be banished. A
return to reality was proposed, with the old theatrical attitudes replaced with effects produced
solely by the voice. There was a call to individualise characters, instead of generalising them, to
produce characters whose minds and bodies would function as they would in real life. Strindberg s
Miss Julie has been said to be an excellent example of this movement, as it involves stress on
multiple motivation of action; a departure from the stereotypical depictions of character; and
random, illogical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is also the bluntly overt exchange of lines such as, Beast! Menial! Lackey! Menial s
whore, lackey s harlot! It has been proposed that this retreat to the characteristics of old
theatricality is perhaps only redeemed in the last minutes, when the stage action becomes
solemnly symbolic. The end of the relationship is represented by the decapitation of Julie s
songbird; the sudden ring of the Count s bell introduces a character that has been silent
throughout, present only in spirit. Jean places a razor in Julie s hand, and she walks out to her
death in silence, as if in a hypnotic trance. Her death is not as melodramatic or theatrical as her
previous behaviour, so this goes some way to compensate for earlier lapses.
Strindberg expressed an aversion to dividing his play into acts, as he believed that, the declining
capacity for illusion is possibly affected by intervals, which give spectators the time to reflect and
thereby withdraw from the suggestive influence of the author hypnotist. His theory centres on the
assumption that by eliminating intervals, which act as breaks from the action, continuity would
improve, thereby increasing the intense nature of the plays action and creating a claustrophobic
environment. In order not to break the illusion, he also wanted to be rid of any musicians that the
audience could see, and would not

His dad was a deputy to the king s butler so Geoffrey had some connections high up. That is were he got some of his jobs in his early life. He joined the Hundred Years War in 1359 on the English s side when they invaded France, but he was taken prisoner. In 1360, King Edward the Third paid his ransom. A couple years later in 1366 to be exact, he got married. The woman he married was actually a lady in waiting to marry King Edward the Third , her name was Philipa de Roet. They say that his artistic maturity started when he wrote the General Prologue to the Canterbury Tales. Ralph Waldo Emerson said in his poem The Poet that Chaucer along with a long list of other poets that they obviously have no limits except for limits of their life time, and resemble a mirror carried through the streets, ready to render an image of every created thing. Chaucer remained Clerk of Works of the Palace of Westminster until less than a year before his death. In the garden of the Lady Chapel of Westminster Abbey, he leased a tenement there. • 4. Theory Of Morality As A System Of Hypothetical Imperatives... Circular Reasoning in Foot s Moral System In Morality as a System of Hypothetical Imperatives , Philippa Foot argues against Immanuel Kant, that morality exists in hypothetical imperatives rather than categorical imperatives. For Kant, categorical imperatives alone serve as moral commands, and it would be impossible for a moral system to be based on hypothetical imperatives because such imperatives serve as means to ends and result from maxims that cannot be universalized into perfect duties. Despite this, Foot holds that acting on many hypothetical imperatives can be morally praiseworthy and can even serve as the basis of moral judgments. Although I agree with Foot that hypothetical imperatives can have moral worth, in this paper, I will argue that a morality based on the purposes that hypothetical imperatives are directed toward appears to be circular. To do this, I will explain Foot s theory of how morality is known and binds. Then, I will argue that this theory is insufficient to explain the moral purpose that hypothetical imperatives must be directed toward, thus begging the question of what is the moral basis of the purpose directed toward in the hypothetical imperative. To base morality on a system of hypothetical imperatives, Foot begins by explaining Kant s distinction between hypothetical and categorical imperatives. According to Kant, a hypothetical imperative can be contrasted with a categorical imperative in that it commands an action that is good to some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Interpersonal Attraction Interpersonal attraction can be defined as how and what attracts us to individuals. As a college student, I am constantly judging people by the first moment I meet them because I am frequently searching for friends and relations in my life. What sparked my interest to research this topic was my fondness for the opposite sex. I was curious as to what attracted to me to certain men and not others. Initially, I believed I was drawn solely to men from a physical attraction in an original engagement, but I found that there is more to this matter. Although physicality is a large degree of interpersonal attraction, research proves that there are several other determining factors playing a part in attraction on first encounters. The most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the atmosphere of technology, the ability to contact more people has dramatically increased, but attraction is still hard to form if one has never met them (Johnson, 2000). The almighty Facebook.com fanatics like myself have over a hundred friends, but my real friends that have this global college networking, are the people I am in close physical proximity to; I think it is hard to have a true attraction to people through a photo and email since it is not in physical closeness and it seems unrealistic. A picture displayed online is not nearly as strong as actual physical contingence. Accordingly, the possibility of attraction on first encounters drastically increases if individuals are in close proximity to each other. People in close proximity subsequentially increase their familiarity to individuals. Familiar people are more likely to be attractive because they are judged to be safe, least likely to cause harm, and inexpensive in time and effort. Initial appeal is most highly prominent when one is easy to physically approach (Kazdin, 2000). • 6. The Effect Of Osmosis On O Shelled Chicken Eggs On... Abstract: The purpose to this experiment was to study the effect of osmosis in de shelled chicken eggs in different percentages of sucrose solutions. Osmosis is the process, in which, water moves across a differentially permeable membrane. The eggs were soaked in vinegar to remove the outside hard shell but still leave the egg in its membrane. By placing the six de shelled in different sucrose solutions, we tested the rate of osmosis. The eggs were placed in the solutions for an hour and weighed in fifteen minute intervals. Then, each weight was recorded and graphed. The results showed that the egg in the water solutiongained the most weigh and the only other egg that gained a little weight was the one in the 10% solution. All the other eggs in the different solutions lost weight, even the unknown solution. According to the results the egg that was in the distilled water solution gained weight because it is the hypertonic solution. All the other eggs lost weight because they were placed in hypotonic solutions with different concentrations of sucrose. The egg that was placed in the higher concentrationof sucrose lost the most weight. So, the higher the concentration of sucrose, the more water the egg lost. Introduction: Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached. Osmosis, however, is the movement of water according to its own concentration gradient across a selectively ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before the school year begins, students must make the choice of whether or not they want to live on campus or commute. Commuting does not necessarily have to do with going to school, but commuting is commonly seen for going to school or work. I had to decide whether or not to commute before my Fall semester started, and picking was a tough choice because I live quite far from the college campus; however, I chose to commute for various reasons and it was the right decision. People who commute far distances, usually complain about the annoyances that come with commuting, and some of these people will choose to move closer even though they were originally at driving distance; however, most people who commute chose to continue commuting for as long as possible anyways. Dorming and living on campus is much more convenient, but commuting to college, if possible, is much better since commuting is cheaper, anyone can do it, family reasons, and of course much more comfortable. Commuting may be tough in the morning since a commuter must wake up, and begin traveling early, but at the end of the year a commuter would save much more money. Most people choose to commute because of money and Free housing, food and laundry. Living at home means you save a lot of money, which can help you down the line when you want to move out on your own (Callahan, Confessions of a College Commuter.). Callahan ... Austen uses humor as a tool to show the readers what behavior is acceptable and what is not. Behaving above your rank is one of these social faux pas. Citizens vote on the upper legislature, lower legislature, and state representatives, known as the Bundestag, Bundesrat, and Länder respectively. The Bundestag goes on to elect a leader or chancellor. This leader has less independent authority than the president of the United States or the British Prime Minister, and is very dependent on parliamentary agreement to pass laws. Thus, the German government would more specifically be labeled a parliamentary republic. A parliamentary republic is a form of government in which the parliamentary legislature (elected by the people) has more power than the head of state. Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone Africa in Cinema Final Paper Professor Rice May 2010 Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone This semester, the topic of Child Soldiers presented a very interesting dilemma that several countries in Africa continue to face today. Sierra Leone, in particular, has struck an interest because of the many films and readings that try to depict this story of the civil war. In class, we have viewed two films representing the problems with child soldiers in Sierra Leone which include films titled Blood Diamond and Ezra. Both films represent opposite sides of the spectrum, as Blood Diamond shows the Western view of child soldiers and Ezra represents the first African view of child soldiers. Their minds are controlled by the RUF and if they did not comply with the orders of the organization they were immediately killed. This type of life is so unimaginable but still continues as we speak. In Blood Diamond, the western view of this miserable story of Sierra Leone is depicted. Having viewed the film several times I now understand the real reason behind the film. Because it is in a western, Hollywood view, the film can only keep the attention of the viewers if there is some kind of white influence. With that said, even though the story of child soldiers is what is meant to be depicted, the love story between a South African Journalist and an American diamond smuggler is what is represented instead. Instead of focusing on the true matter at hand, Hollywood insists on using the talents of Leonardo Di Caprio to misrepresent the issues over diamonds in Sierra Leone. In the film, it is misleading to see how savage like the children of Sierra Leone are made out to be. The story almost seemed too good to be true in the film and to anyone who does not know much about the situation in Sierra Leone it may have been a great film. In my opinion it was a very sad excuse for a film and the film in every way used the situation in Sierra Leone as an advantage to the boost of some of Hollywood s best actors careers. He uses humour and allegory to open canadian s eyes to the more serious issues that we are faced with. The story is set in a Southwest Alberta Art Gallery and Prairie Museum. A place built by white men and representing in a sense, white man s canada. King uses the perspective of the museum staff, in order to see how they view and try to deal with the totem problem. from the perspective of the staff, this is an issue of tolerance. obviously, the aboriginals don t want to be tolerated, they want to be respected and treated as equals. King uses a strong sense of humour to emphasize the ridiculousness of that ideology. Using satirical humour in my opinion, is more appropriate than taking the issue of tolerance seriously. This type of law making tends to increase the power of executive agencies as well as the courts. Because the judiciary is forced to clarify legislation, to rule on its details and apply legislation to uncertain situations, vague legislationends up allocating substantial power to the judiciary. Imprecise and open ended statues often increase to power of executive agencies, too. Such agencies are given broad mandates without much guidance or oversight. Decades ago, the US Congress would assign specific priorities and focuses to federal agencies when approving the yearly federal budget. This guidance is especially important because the legislature exerts little other control over independent agencies, like the Federal Trade Commission or the Federal Communications Commission. Now, because the federal budget is so often approved during crisis conditions (and sometimes merely extends the previous year s budget into the next), Congress offers little guidance to independent agencies. This enhances the power of independent agencies while leaving them without guidance. We therefore, through our freely elected representatives, adopt this constitution as the supreme law of the Republic... (Preamble to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996). South Africa s past is one that is rooted in inequalities and injustices; racism and subjugation. Our Constitution was promulgated into law by South Africa s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela, twenty years ago in 1996. It is considered to be a Constitution second to none in the world. Our Bill of Rights, which was drafted taking very careful consideration of our country s painful non democratic history, is widely regarded as a document that is a global standard of human rights. The South African constitution was drawn up through an extensive multi party negotiation process. The result of this process was a cohesive, highly influential document. Initially declared as our country s Interim Constitution in 1993, this document allowed for all South Africans to make the transition from apartheid to democracy. Post the country s watershed democratic elections in April 1994, the Interim Constitution was taken through a further consultative process involving the public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Analysis Of Joe Garland s In The Mood The Jazz era was a time period in which the definition of music began to diverge; composers were able to express themselves in a sense that was soulful and vibrant, where any door of possibility became obtainable. In The Mood was a piece by Joe Garland composed in the 1930 s during the swing era. The iconic Jazznumber had been arranged by many artists; however, it was not until Glenn Millerorchestrated this piece so perceptively that In The Mood became so well renowned. It was in 1939 when Miller seamlessly altered the Jazz piece that In The Mood was sent to number 1 on the U.S. charts for 13 weeks in 1940. It can be stated that Glenn Miller thoughtfully manipulated In The Mood in the swing style that has in effect redefined this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fundamentally, Jazz was a powerful era that essentially changed the notions of music; Glenn Miller successfully explored this convention and reformed In The Mood that completely altered its definition as a Jazz ... • 49. Naturalism in Miss Julie Essay Naturalism in Miss Julie Writers involved in the naturalist movement believed that actors lines should be spoken naturally, and that mechanical movements, vocal effects, and irrational gestures should be banished. A return to reality was proposed, with the old theatrical attitudes replaced with effects produced solely by the voice. There was a call to individualise characters, instead of generalising them, to produce characters whose minds and bodies would function as they would in real life. Strindberg s Miss Julie has been said to be an excellent example of this movement, as it involves stress on multiple motivation of action; a departure from the stereotypical depictions of character; and random, illogical ... It has been proposed that this retreat to the characteristics of old theatricality is perhaps only redeemed in the last minutes, when the stage action becomes solemnly symbolic. The end of the relationship is represented by the decapitation of Julie s songbird; the sudden ring of the Count s bell introduces a character that has been silent throughout, present only in spirit. Jean places a razor in Julie s hand, and she walks out to her death in silence, as if in a hypnotic trance. Her death is not as melodramatic or theatrical as her previous behaviour, so this goes some way to compensate for earlier lapses. Strindberg expressed an aversion to dividing his play into acts, as he believed that, the declining capacity for illusion is possibly affected by intervals, which give spectators the time to reflect and thereby withdraw from the suggestive influence of the author hypnotist. His theory centres on the assumption that by eliminating intervals, which act as breaks from the action, continuity would improve, thereby increasing the intense nature of the plays action and creating a claustrophobic environment. In order not to break the illusion, he also wanted to be rid of any musicians that the audience could see, and would not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
