2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and coventions of real media products? Masthead The masthead is Conventionally placed On the left hand side Of the page, much alike that of a Real media publication. The name Of my magazine I chose to keep rather Short and snappy, so that it would be easy For the audience to remember, and connect With at first glance. Furthermore, ‘SAMPLE’ is a convenient name for my magazine, as it is aimed at an audience that enjoy a range of musical genre’s and styles. Therefore, the magazine ‘SAMPLE’ simply takes different artists from their individual genres, and places them all in one magazine. Finally, I extracted the colours for my masthead from James Sterling’s hat. I done this not only for an effect, but also to establish a subtle link between the lead artist, which also reinforces the house style of the magazine. Left-Third. The left third of my magazine cover does not necessarily abide by basic conventions. Here we have simply the filler artists. You are able to see that these artists are not the highlight of the magazine as they are presented in a smaller font, and are not highlighted. Cover Lines The combination of merging The use of cover lines with a Flash, creates a further attraction For the reader. Firstly, the flash Draws their attention to the page, With it’s use of a bright colour, This then allows the reader to View the cover lines of John Mayer, etc. These cover lines Display rather important interviews With a variety of artists. Although, They are a less important than The main act. Main Image The main image in use here, Focuses upon the most Important artist to be included In the magazine. The photograph On display makes it obvious Of what genre ‘James Sterling’ Represents, through the inclusion Of an electric guitar. The way The artist is positioned, emphasises His type of personality and Character. The colour of the Instrument in use, alongside The choice of clothing, blends In with the cream canvas on Display.
3. Contents Page Small image of the cover page, I thought the use of this would help build the Reputation and individuality of my magazine. Also, it serves as a reminder as to who stars Within this particular issue of SAMPLE. The consistent use of font style, and Organised sections, enables me to create SAMPLE’s own individual house style. This enhances the character of the Magazine, and also makes it recognisable And easy for the reader to relate to. Repetitive use Of the SAMPLE Logo enhances The profile Of the magazine. Hierarchy of articles Displays which band Will be of more Importance to the Reader. ‘Teenage Glory Days’ will appeal To the reader, as They are more Mainstream than ‘ The Lads’ .
4. Double Page Spread. Colour Scheme The crème background ties In with the basic colour Conventions of the front cover, Therefore creating a house Style that the reader can become Familiar. Tone and Register The style of writing is set to appeal To the audience, which ranges from 16-25. Therefore, the questions, and Responses of the interviewer/ Interviewee, relate to subjects that Interest that particular age group. Lead Image This image encapsulates The style of ‘James Sterling’ it signifies the Type of musician he is, With the inclusion of Guitars, and amplifiers. The facial expression Emphasises how Serious he considers His music. Furthermore, This image brings his Working environment into Consideration. Pull Quote The colour of the pull quote makes it stand out in the eyes Of the reader. “Its not easy being a rock star” will intrigue The reader, as they will feel the urge to read on, and Discover what the article contains.

8. Audience Feedback My response summary Indicates, that the large Majority of people that Viewed my magazine were Of the target age group 16-18. My magazine was aimed At both a male and Female audience, the Results here show that Most participants in this Survey, were female.
9. Audience feedback The aim of this question, was to discover what The audience found likeable about my front page. Many referred to the picture as ‘standing out’ and Also mentioned that the colours work well Together. This is pleasing, as my aim was to Extract colours from the picture, and use them in Both the background, and masthead. The objective of this question was to Establish how I could improve the front Cover. The audience felt that the colours Used to represent the artist names were too Difficult to read, and that there was no need To display the artists in boxes.
10. Audience Feedback The aim of this question Was to find out if the contents Page was easy to navigate, and Well presented. The audience felt that The page was well organised, and it is Clear that both the contents page, and the Front page belong to the same magazine. This was the aim of my contents page, to Create a distinctive resemblance between The rest of the magazine, and the front Page. As well as to inform the audience Of the different types of acts on display. The point of question six, was To establish whether the audience Found my image style appealing, Along with the rest of my double Page spread. Someone mentioned That the photograph has a Backstage feel to it, others said It reiterates the overall house Style. The only thing that Displeased me about my Photography, was that many of the Pictures in use seem very similar, The surroundings were also limited Due to the use of my own musical Equipment.
11. Audience feedback This question was used to find out if the audience believed my DPS was of a certain journalistic style, And also to establish whether my article appeared To have a strong link to my images, and the rest of ‘ SAMPLE’ magazine. It was mentioned that my artist Appeared rather laid back and humble. By presenting My artist like this, I hoped to create a relaxed Interview that the readers could relate to. The purpose of this question, was to discover If the audience were able to identify what genre Of music my magazine contained. The overall Target, based on my survey monkey results, was To create a magazine that featured both Hip-Hop And rock elements. The results presented here, Indicate that the magazine featured, Pop, Hip-Hop, Soft Rock, and Indie, acts.
12. Audience Feedback The feedback from this question Shows that SAMPLE contains Features associated with both Mainstream, and Alternative music Magazines. The objective of this Question was to find out If my magazine was Presented in such a way That the public would Wish to purchase it. Fortunately, many of the Reviewers felt that SAMPLE was interesting Enough in which to purchase. Although, it was stated that The price was slightly high.
