My duo consists of a 29-year-old male and 31-year-old female who conform to the indie genre. They come from working-class backgrounds and share the values of equality that are typical of indie artists. Their style reflects indie conventions through casual clothing like jeans and t-shirts. They choose an atypical song for an indie duo, Angus & Julia Stone's "Big Jet Plane", that contradicts typical indie codes. While their style reinforces indie stereotypes, their gender mix challenges expectations and may appeal to audiences by adding sex appeal.

2. WHO ARE THEY?
My duo conforms to the indie
genre through character. The two
artists are aged 29 and 31, one is
also male and the other is female.
The duo come from white working
class backgrounds and can relate
to the target audience (working
class).

3. VALUES AND BELIEFS
My duo are patriotic but are also laid
back on their values and have
standard morals (equality) which is
what most artists in the indie genre
follow and believe.
They believe in the very typical laid
back attitude which can be linked to
the rock and roll attitudes.

4. ENCODING USING
MISE EN SCENE
• Costume = male – black skinny jeans, baggy t-shirts,
messy hair, denim jacket; female – denim or black
skirt, plain baggy t-shirt or pastel coloured top,
denim jacket.
• Props = guitar (acoustic), instruments, cigarettes.
• Facial expressions/body language = relaxed, getting
into the music, laid back, smiling/laughing.
• Lighting/colour = Low key lighting to create a
moody atmosphere (key in indie genre), mixture of
high key lighting (more dependent on the meaning of
the song).

5. SONG CHOICE
I am using Angus & Julia Stone – Big Jet
Plane as it’s not a typical indie duo to
choose and it does not fit to the codes and
conventions of the genre. In fact, it
contradicts the typical codes and
conventions of the indie genre.

6. REPRESENTATION
THEORY
I would like to have reinforced some of the
stereotypes for my indie duo, as the costumes fit
the genre and the age range is 29 – 31 which is the
common age of most indie artists. They’re also
white and working class.
However, you have them challenging the
stereotypes as they are a male and female duo
which could add a sex appeal for the male
audience. Also the song chosen is mainly played
using an acoustic guitar. And the fact I have
chosen a duo within the indie genre is not very
typical.

7. AUDIENCE APPEAL
My duo will appeal to my target audience as
they conform to the audience background
(working class) and therefore are relatable
to them. The fact that one is male and the
other is female will make them more
relatable as the female audience will be
interested in them, as well as the male
audience due to the sex appeal from the
female member.
