2. Who are they?
Our band conforms to the indie genre through
character. They are aged 21-26 and are all
male, they also come from white working class
backgrounds and can therefore relate to the
target audience (working class).
3. Values and beliefs
Our band our patriotic but are also very laid back
on their values and have standard morals e.g.
equality.
They believe in typical rock and roll attitudes such
as being careless and laid back.
We are planning to encode meaning (Stuart hall)
through mise en scene by using elements such as
costume, props and facial expressions/body
language to encode our band. We shall also
encode meaning through our choice of song as it
comes from an indie band.
4. Encoding through mise en scene
Costume = skinny jeans, monochrome, leather
jackets, messy hair and causal clothes
Props = Alcohol, cigarettes, smoke bombs,
instruments
Facial exp/Body lang = Chilled, getting into music,
dancing and laid back
Lighting/Colour = Low key lighting alongside the
monochrome feel to show a moody atmosphere
which is a key element in indie genre.
5. Song choice
We are using The Courteeners – What Took You
So Long? as it conforms to a typical band and
shows many codes and conventions of the
genre

6. Representation Theory
We have reinforced the majority of stereotypes
for our indie band, as they are males aged 21-
26 who are all white working class.
However, you could interpret our band to be
challenging stereotypes as there are now
more mixed ethnic minority groups such as
‘Blossoms Band’
7. Audience Appeal
Our band will appeal to our target audience as
they conform to the audience background
(working class/male) and therefore are
relatable to them. They would also be
perceived as ‘cool’ and ‘rock and roll’ who can
be seen as British icons and can be related to
other successful indie artists such as Oasis and
Kasabian.
