3. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Only in the west – Yeek –
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsLAYu7X_kU
Shake – Yeek – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F47sa4MCv6I
Both the links are from the same artist. It may be undiverse
however its essentially the genre of music I want to use for my
melancholic music video. Both songs follow the same style and
genre of music
For the first link, the song only in the west is a relaxed and
realistic view of a run down version of urban living within the USA.
Shake is a more upbeat song by the artist Yeek. Its about losing
your natural filter around people (usually with some sort of drug).
Like most of his songs, Yeek refers to the woman in his life. With
questions like: “what did you do to me?”
4. YEEK – TOO FAST
HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=SAGEDDYYUE8
A slow, melancholic beat in turn with lyrics from the
urban surroundings. About broken relationships and
hard living in the city. Everything from the lighting to
Yeek’s body language is screaming urban. The music
video is filmed outside with a low ISO setting dimming
the background even more, barley just being able to see
the lights. Whereas Yeek himself acts as if he doesn’t
care about what happens to him. He acts very “chill” to
others in his environment, again not caring about what
happens to him or the people around him.
5. SHAWN MENDES – MERCY
HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=KKGVMN
68BYU
Beginning with a slow opening, the song continues to
build tension as it progresses. This is also displayed in
the music video with the car he’s sat in filling with water.
In the video, the water symbolises a broken relationship
which is taking a toll on Shawn, filling the car more and
more as the music grows in tension.
The song is pop with a fast beat.
6. LEAGUE OF LEGENDS – RISE
HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=FB8TYL
TD7EE
This video is used to promote the tournament of league
of legends, the most popular game of 2019. a game
based of reactions, perfect timing and teamwork.
Millions of people attempt to compete to win the world
cup.
This song depicts the struggle and effort people put into
the game to win the tournament. The videos story has a
character duelling and fighting people that get in the way
of his conquest of victory and inning the world cup.
“Only those with the ambition to RISE above others will
know its height” depicting the mountain people have to
climb to reach the top and win.
Each fight in the video gets progressively harder for the
main Character, with the music building each time a fight
happens.

8. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Eye level camera shots – this for music videos will create
a natural shot for the viewer, placing them in the scene.
Allowing me to show what I want them to see from a
perspective of the camera imitating someone there. I
believe that I will use this for the majority of the music
video.
Wide angle shots – by using wide angle shots I allow the
viewer to see a bold angle of the surroundings. Giving
them a good grasp of what the subjects in the music
video can see.
Cutting on action – using this editing technique, it will
allow the the viewer to be on edge as I cut away from
what they believe will happen next. Creating tension and
adding an extra way for me to transition for me to cut to
another scene.
11. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of my ideas
- acts of kindness will pass on the green hair which I'm
animating.
- an urban lifestyle will suit the music genre of the music
I'm thinking of using.
- acts of unkindness will pass on the green animated
hair.
- I can put a clear message that people should be more
kind with the acts of kindness idea.
- with the acts of unkindness idea, the message can be
that people should break the loop of unkindness.
12. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to my ideas
- cant film in certain locations (eg. The river)
- cant use expensive special effects, not only will they be
expensive, its also not possible with my equipment.
- might not get the correct film for my music video.
- the weather
- the audience might not understand the story.
13. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Only in the West // Yeek
Yeek is an urban artist on the West coast of America. “only in
the West” is a slow upbeat track picturing the low life of
west urban lifestyles in the USA. It has many interesting parts
in the track which I edit around. Pauses in the music and
long melodies which I can develop the story I want to write
fro the track. On his album cover for his single “Only in the
West” Yeek uses the same animation style seen in other
songs like shake and the album “Sebastian” itself. The
symbolism of animated hairstyle plays a significant part in
the album as its featured on many of the songs and music
videos. His videos usually features a low Western American
urban lifestyle. A lifestyle which includes depression, robbery
and drugs. Yeek tends to stick to a lowfi form of pop, no
upbeat tracks. With melancholic lyrics and slow beats Yeek
displays his experiences in his music.
Artists that Yeek contributes with are generally based around
his area. Artists like Dominic Fike and Brockhampton. They
all live around the West coast of America.
14. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Only in the West // Yeek // https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsLAYu7X_kU
The begging of the track begins with 8 sections each with a pause between them. I can use this
opening in many different way. Either to introduce surroundings or the characters in the short film.
Also the pauses will allow some creativity, I could either could cut to a separate “filler” clip of an urban
surrounding, or I could just cut to black because of the pause.
Your always told as a child: to not go out at night. This could be for many reasons. Like your parents
might want to know your home, or they believe that you could be robbed or beat up in a run down
place. I've decided to keep a majority of my filming to night so as to keep the idea of uncertainty of
urban nights and the tension of the night.
As the song develops it continues in one piece, using the lyrics: “I got the west coast blues, I got the
west coast blues.” on this first bit I can include the first bit of the story. The theme I’m most interested
is the ‘acts of unkindness’ and it would be displayed in a scene of someone having a phone stolen or
some other ‘act of unkindness.’ This would pass on the animated hair onto the next person. As if it was
a curse. Each act of unkindness would be animated in its own right. For example someone punching
someone else (which (big wow) is unkind) would have the fist be surrounded by the animation as if to
suggest the unkindness is taking place. Another example I was thinking of was to have someone's
phone being stolen, and the person grabbing the phone would have their arm engulfed in the
animation.
To create extra footage for the music video, I was thinking of filming urban surroundings. E.g. a traffic
light changing colour against a dark background. This creates a good example of the surroundings of
where the subjects are compared to their surroundings. Which in my case will be urban York.
15. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
I believe the use of the animated hair style as a theme for acts of
unkindness in other ways like a surrounding animation to a punch.
This should give the animation some more lifestyle and allow me to
play around with it in more ways. Mimicking the song “shake” by
Yeek, when he uses the animation to display him throwing up, but
instead of actually throwing up he just imitates it with the
animation.
In the video I want the hairstyle to symbolize the act/behavior of
unkindness. Once the viewer understands that the hairstyle
symbolizes the unkindness, the will know that once its on a
subjects head, the subject will perform an act of unkindness.
By being set in an urban setting, I believe that the underlying
theme of unkindness fits very well. In reality, the general public
tend to be unfriendly to each other in cities. The “acts of
unkindness's” are more commonly linked to areas of poverty and a
buildup of people. Areas like this tend to have a higher chance of
crime and unemployment. Both leading to an increase in the
buildup of public unhappiness in that area.
I want the video in general to be the breaking of unkind actions. A
17. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
To make my music video, first of all I will need a camera.
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
18. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
As an urban video, I intend to display the behaviors and
objects you would see in a city. This can easily be done
by capturing the elements of the city. Like the more
deprived and darker parts. The city at night will display
the behaviors of people that I want.
The music track itself will be melancholic. The lyrics
singing about how Yeek has to live the low life in the
city. I interpret the song “only in the west” as a low life
look at cities. I believe I need to represent the low life
part of the music within the video through different
camera techniques and shots.
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
19. LOCATIONS
I will be mostly be filming outside, however I will need some indoor
shots. I can do this in many areas but I believe my house along
with my friends house will be perfect for some urban house shots.
To get the urban shots, I will have to go to center York in the
autumn. At this time of year it tends to rain. So I will need to bring
equipment to keep the camera dry and in working conditions. The
city contains a lot of people and cities themselves tend to have
increased chance of people attempting to steal the equipment. This
risk will mean that I will have to keep tabs on all of the equipment
that I have in the city center.
York itself has many different locations within it. For example the
castle, the shambles and the river that runs straight through the
city. The river itself is one of the iconic points in the city and if I
decide to shoot there is will have to be aware of many different
issues I could face. For example, the river contains water.
Electronic equipment like a camera doesn’t work with water on the
electronics. Also, by being by the river, I could fall in. this could
lead to the risk of drowning.
When getting to shooting locations, I shouldn’t have an issue with
transport. This is because one, I live close to many of the places
20. EQUIPMENT
To make a music video, I will first of all need a camera to
shoot with. The college provides cameras which can film
720p at 60 frames per second. This fills the criteria of
the assessment. The film will look crisp on a decent
monitor which tends to have a frame rate of 60 per
second.
To keep the camera steady, a tripod will be necessary.
This again can be supplied by the college. However
transporting it will be the problem. It’s a large piece of
equipment which without a vehicle will be hard to move.
In my case, I will have to use a bike to transport my
equipment.
22. PERSONNEL
Crew:
The team I would use is mainly me getting shots of other people. I would be free anytime I would want
to shoot people for the music video. I believe I need to work on my camera steadiness. I tend to shake
while filming without the tripod.
Other people helping me film will be a friend called Arthur who has got no camera experience. However,
I can show him the basics and show him the shots I want to get. This does mean that I wont be able to
get the exact shots I want because its not me using the camera. However I cant shoot myself with a
camera.
Cast:
I would want to have 3 or 4 different people in the music video. To have a variety of different people in
the music video.
First of all I would want my friend to take a main role within the music video. His body language and
personality is exactly what I want to convey across to the audience. But he’s stated to me that he is
camera shy and doesn’t know exactly how to act in front of a camera. However I believe I can motivate
him to do his best in front of a camera. He doesn’t have to move far to come to meet me, as we link
only 5 minuets away from each other.
I would want to be in my music video, however not for a major part. I have acted in front of a camera
many times so I'm not camera shy. I can work at any time I need to and I can get to anywhere in york.
Another person I'm thinking of helping me in this music video: is my brother. He has also had
experience in front of a camera however he is sometimes shy in front of a camera. He lives in the same
house as me so he also isn't far from york city center.
No one in my cast or crew will be paid because I know them personally.
23. PROPS/COSTUME
The only props and costumes I need will be personally
items and clothing’s. more casual the better.
25. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
26. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
I want my music video to take a more low beat urban style, capturing the feel of
uncertainty that people get during the night in a city. The images on the left are a
good visual representation of what I want the music video to look like. The
colours as you can see are: dark, barley lit with many blues and blacks. Dark
colours and dimly lit places symbolizes uncertainty as the human eye cannot take
in as much information in a dimly lit place compared to a well lit location. I want
the audience to have a sense of uncertainty and tension just from the location
that their in.
In the images on the right, there are many uses of neon lights and lighting in
general. This isn't what I wanted in my music video, rather I would want dimmer,
less invasive lighting which doesn’t distract the viewer from the main characters
of the music video. However, everything else you see in the images is similar to
what I would want to include in the music video. From the lonely bus stop to the
worn road markings.
The song itself is split into mainly 16 seconds sections. Verse, chorus for
example. This allows me to play around with difference scenes and how the video
explains the story. I'm visualizing the music video starting by introducing the
characters in the first section after the introduction. Either by, a small clip of them
performing an action or just a still image.
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals - Provides inspiration and information
for the “look & feel” - Presents key moments in your video - A means to
sketch/plan ideas - Information on colour/lighting - Defining the “mise-en-
scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production, the
following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own way, add
more as you need to
27. YORK CITY CENTER
York itself provides a good urban location for my music video.
The images on the right show some of the spots I could use in
my music video. The photos taken have been found on google
maps and all are located within york city center.
It has the textures, colour and objects that I want to include in
my music video. While these photos were takin during the day,
I believe that they will provide the uneasy urban feel. Even
though these photos were taken during the day, you can see
the urban feel that I want to get in the music video in the
walls, stone road and gray sky.
28. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
29. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
30. ONLY IN THE WEST –
BREAKDOWN
It opens with an intro, just with a guitar, using the same cords found in
the chorus.
0:16
It then is broken by the introduction of a second guitar and a drum.
However its broken into 8 separate pieces, each with a pause..
0:32
Then it transitions into the first chorus:
“Sitting alone in my room
Thinking about what I'mma doo~oo
Music don't pay the bills
Music don't pay for foo~ood”
0:48
“Homies sell hella drugs
Only 'cause they have to
And that sucks
They got the cars and I ride the bus
Unless I'm on a board, wheels and trucks”
1:04
After this it plays the verse of the song:
“I got the West coast blues
I got the West coast blues
I got the West coast blu-ees
31. After this verse the song continues into a sort of filler with the same
instrements and beat from the verse, but with less lyrics:
“yeah hey
Yeah yeah
o,k
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah one two” 1:36
This then proceeds to the second chorus which interestingly lasts double
the time compared to the useual 16 seconds, lasting 32 seconds (+2
seconds of filler):
“Oh no, She’s sniffin’ her car keys
Hit the tree, now riding with Molly
Mushrooms are road trips snacks
Won't live life unless is fast
Pull up, now she's drinking my bottle
My guess? She's probably a model
I don't know how to act
So I grabbed her by the ass”
2:10
After the second chorus, the song moves back the verse we all know and
love at this point however increases the amount of time taken at 22
seconds to finish this verse:
“I got the west coast blues
I got the west coast blues
I got the west coast blu-ees
I got the west coast blu~ue~ues
I got the west coast blues
I got the west coast blues
I got the west coast blu-ees
I got the west coast blu~ue~ues”
32. After the last verse it plays a finishing guitar solo which
takes 28 seconds to finish.
The last part of the song finishes with a guy explaining
something to the listener taking 15 seconds:
“But cars never run when you need 'em, um
I don't know, I don't know what else to tell you
I don't trust these bitches that's-
That's how I feel when I wake up
That's how I feel when I go to sleep
And that's it
(What are you doing?)”
An interesting thing to note with this song, is that each
section takes 16 seconds to finish. Be it the chorus, the intro
or the verses. This breack between verses and chorus spread
by 16 second sections allows me to adapt my editing style to
suit the music splitting in 16 second increments.
33. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
34. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
35. The introduction to “only in the west” includes a 16 second long
transition into the first verse. Being 16 seconds, I can use that
time to introduce the viewer to the surroundings and create the
atmosphere I want in the music video. 16 seconds is plenty of
time to allow me to create an atmosphere. If I didn’t set an
atmosphere, other clips in the video could be taken out of
context. By establishing an atmosphere I can reference subjects
in the music video which are of similar nature.
36. In the video I need to distinguish the characters in the video and
other more secondary characters. One way I have thought of doing
this is by displaying them at the beginning of the video in a slow
neutral position. Either the characters waking up or sleeping in their
bed. The example above shows my bed and how the light comes
through the window. In other locations I would still want to film a
birds eye view of their bed. By getting a birds eye view, I will be able
to establish to the viewer the characters and where they sleep. This
for the viewer will be a good refinance of the characters current
37. Not only will it show the background to the viewer but
it will also show the whole location where the character
lives. A wide angle shot in general is used to establish
a location for the viewer to reference. The video can
return to this location in another scene. But it allows
me to create a space which I can return to. It’s a place
of significance for the viewer because the context of
the location relates to the character.
38. The introduction of the animated hair symbolizes who is
taking part in the act of unkindness. In the example above,
the object (be it a phone or wallet) has a shroud of
animated hair, which I currently believe will be green.
Green to symbolize envy.
39. The animated hair plays a big role in the symbol of the
unkindness and how it sticks with people. Not to distract
the viewer, but to symbolize the who is going to have an
act of unkindness effect them. Then spreading the
animated hair to the next victim/perpetrator.
40. Once the action/ act of unkindness has taken place its
important for the animated hair to transition from one to the
other. The animated hair, once on someone cannot be
removed. Only passed on to someone else.
In the end I would want the video to conclude with the
animated hair being broken or fading away after someone did
something kind for a change. This would “break the circle” of
unkindness and leave a long lasting message for the music
41. WHOLE SHOT LIST
These slides will give a full view on what type of shots I will include
in my music video.
0 – 16 seconds: open with urban night shots to establish a
surrounding for the viewer.
16 – 32 seconds: in the song only in the west you will hear pauses
in this time. The shots in this time will establish the characters to
the viewer. By displaying small snap shots of each character it will
be easy for the viewer to understand who is involved. And the 16
seconds should be plenty of time to establish this to the viewer.
32 – 80 seconds: for the first section of the video will follow the
perpetrator through their life and as they commit the action to
another random victim (who is also a character). Throughout all of
this, I will include filler shots to keep the music video in time with
the music and to continue to establish the surroundings to the
viewer. However I will not want there to be too many otherwise it
will drain out the main music video. The first act of unkindness will
be someone having their bag stolen. In the UK, having luggage or
bags stolen is a common occurrence in urban parts of the UK. This
act is itself unkind and rather indiscriminate, but it’s a good way to
establish the theme.
Once the act of unkindness has transitioned from the perpetrator
to the victim, the shots will follow the new character through their
life.
42. SHOT LIST CONTINUED
80 – 96 seconds: this amount of time is similar to the
beginning of the music video. With brakes in between the
music allowing for multiple changes in scenes quickly.
Here I will get urban shots to continue the narrative for
the viewer. After this I will follow the character who had
their bag stolen.
96 – 130 seconds: the victim becomes the perpetrator. It
follows how they disliked losing their bag, and how their
going to get their money back by the suggestions of
selling illegal substances.

46. LOCATION INFORMATION
All of the places that I want to film at are located in York
and York city center. This means that its easy for me to
get from one filming place to another because I
personally live close to York city center. Logistics and
the time it take to get to york shouldn’t be a problem.
As I stated that I live close to the city center.
I live in Fishergate, which is south of the city center. On
the image of Google maps, you can see roughly where I
live in the circle. This makes it easy for me to transport
people and equipment from one place to another,
because I'm close to where I want to shoot.
If for example it was raining during my photo-shoot, I
will have to decide on other places to film my music
video. I would choose places that are indoors. The train
station in York for example is a perfect place to film in
because of the location: its still close to me, its well lit
at night and more importantly its
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
47. LOCATIONS
I want to find locations in york that capture the sense
of urgency and claustrophobia to drive the viewer in
a direction of tension. The fist image I believe will be
used for the scene where the animated hair is passed
on through the act of unkindness which will be
someone beating up someone else. Which in my
opinion is unkind. The first photo is in a small
alleyway why lightly turns to the left not allowing the
viewer to see the end. This does create tension as it
is a small claustrophobia place. Its located at St
Martin’s Ln in York city centre.
48. LOCATIONS
Unfortunately, none of the images can be
taken at night. All of them are taken
using Google maps which are taken
during the day so as to get the clearest
image. But at night, I would see this as a
great shot as its incredibly urban with
barley any lights. This doesn’t matter as
the shot itself will be at night. This road
is located at Tanner Row also in York city
center.
49. LOCATIONS
Other shots I could get while in york are
more suburban. By the river, there are
many shots which can add dynamic
behaviors for the music video. Again,
unfortunately this image is taken during
the day. At night this place completely
changes. The trees really block out any
static light from the close houses and
the lights by the path dimly light the
area around them with a faint orange
glow. When I've been there myself at
night, I have enjoyed the low lit ambient
glow that the lights give off as I walk
down the path. I believe it will suit the
melancholic mood of the song that I'm
choosing.
52. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
On Friday the 25th of October and Saturday the 26th of
October I will take my colleagues into york at during the
day and at night to get the required shots in those
locations. Other shots we will get on these days will
include shots at their houses on their beds. This should
only take the 2 days I have specified to get all I need for
my music video.
I believe the editing of my music video will only take me
a few days to edit, but it might take longer due to the
animation.
54. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
I only filmed in public places, so I didn’t need to get any
consent forms from any business because of locations.
This would be different if I needed to film in the York
railway station for example. I would have to get consent
to film in advance to filming.
