Rudimental – waiting all night
1. This is a low budget made video used to narrate the uplifting story of a bike
rider (bmxer) losing his leg and eventually having it amputated. It follows the
journey of him in a car accident to be able to ride his bmx again.
2. » SHOTS USED: CLOSE UP, LOW ANGLE,
HIGH ANGLE, LONG SHOT
» The close ups are mainly focused on his amputated leg to stress his
condition to the audience here they feel empathy where the industry who
created the video are likely to get a mass audience. The close ups are
mainly shot on the main character „Kurt‟ who has been involved in a car
accident. Here the audience can build a relationship with this character.
» The low angles are used to capture him at his sad moments so this can give
the audience a sense of empathy as they looking down towards him.
3. » I would argue this this music video is a narrative. The beginning establishes
a group of bike riders, riding around and one member is involved in a car
accident. The camera follows the member through his time in hospital,
recovery, BMX house parties, more recovery involving workouts and walk
practises to the final scene when he is able to ride a BMX again.
» The lyrics are very repetitive. The main lyrics that are attracted in the
audiences minds are “tell me that you need, tell me that you want me” and
“waiting all night”. It can be argued that the lyrics don‟t illustrate the
visuals as such but after a few views of the video there is a moment of
realisation that the patient involved in this accident is waiting to ride again
and he wants and needs to be able to use his leg again in the ways he used.
4. » This video does have a sense of voyeurism because of the narrative being
uplifting. Even though it‟s a low budget product the audience have reacted
positively. This has received an on going of 21,777,961 views on the
popular video site, YouTube.
» Rudimental specialise in electronic sound that are famous for having
conceptual videos and narrative. Electronic videos are recognisable for
their sound not the artist, so in a way it could be said that the music videos
in this genre is for performance.
5. » Dyer‟s theory does contrast with visuals of this video because there is not a
star. The character that is being captured at many close ups is an ordinary
person, we get this idea from costume of the individuals in the video also
the scenes of the house parties are activities that the majority of the
American population do. In the genre of electronic its less likely for the
artist to be shown in the video as they are more serious in the music
industry than the pop genre because most of their videos aren‟t always to
promote their image but to promote their music and make people think of
the concept of the song. In the video “waiting all night” the audience are
offered a verisimilitude because there not imitating the main character but
connecting to him because of his narrative.
6. » Like most songs of this century, you hear the song before the video is
released, I have an interest in the genre of electronic and other genres such
as soulful house, deep house and reggae. Once hearing this song I did enjoy
it so I was looking forward to what the video was gong to offer. The main
reason this video is my favourite video is because of the narrative and its
inspiring moral. Every time hearing this song on the radio or on a music
playing device I instantly imagine the video.
» The catchy lyrics contributes to the sound of the song.
