Carlinhos Brown was born in Brazil and became a major figure in the Brazilian pop scene. In the 1990s, he toured internationally as the leader of the musical group Timbalada, which consisted of over 100 singers and percussionists from his poor hometown neighborhood. They became famous by recording eight albums. Brown had started a music school to inspire local children away from violence through playing percussion instruments made from tin cans and other containers. Many students went on to successful music careers, improving life in the complex neighborhood.
