2. OUR AUDIENCE
Our documentary’s target audience is British young women
between the ages 16 to 21. Having a younger target audience is
something to take into consideration when it comes to music choice
as traditionally young people are more likely to listen modern day pop,
rock and rap music.
3. MUSIC GENRES
Some of the genres that a younger target audience may like is:
Pop Music
Rock Music
Techno Music
We also have to take into consideration how well the music fits the
topic of a documentary.
4. ROCK
Modern Rock music is often considered loud using many variations of electric instruments. At first
a person may not associate Rock music with makeup, however it is interesting to note that many
rock artists in the past have worn makeup on stage to create exaggerated looks (although this
depends on the subgenre of music).
The connotations of Rock music and makeup separately are in juxtaposition, one being “tough,
gritty and dark”, the other being “feminine, artistic and pretty”. This could be used in a way that
challenges conventions, similar to how our narrative may challenge society’s opinions.
One issue would be that stereotypically, rock music is more popular with a male demographic,
although women like rock music too they may sometimes be considered a niche market. We want
our documentary to appeal to the majority of our target audience.
5. POP
Pop music or ‘popular’ music, contains elements and influences from many different genres
of music- this may be useful in appealing to our target audience as in this case there could be
‘something for everyone’. Music taste is subjective, therefor going for something similar to
various other forms of music may be a safe option.
Pop artists are often featured on fashion magazines and stereotypically wear a lot of makeup
for on stage performances and photoshoots. Some are even icons in the makeup industry and
own their own brands. This means that pop artists are heavily linked with the makeup industry
already- their music style will be relevant to the topic.
Pop music is stereotypically popular with young women, as that is our target audience it is
logical to choose as it may be a guaranteed success. However some people dislike pop music
because of it’s overexposure in today’s media. This will be something to consider.
6. TECHNO
Techno music has a wide variety of subgenres and is perhaps the
newest form of music out of the ones mentioned. It’s modern style may
be popular with young people of the 21st century.
Techno music is sometimes used in fashion catwalks- making it
connote for high fashion and industry. This could be useful towards out
documentary topic.
Overall Techno music is still considered a niche interest, therefor if we
were going to use it we wouldn’t be able to rely heavily on it.
7. CONCLUSION
The music genre most likely to be successful is Pop music as it is
more appealing to our target audience and is overall a safe choice due
to it’s links with the Makeup industry.
We may however include techno music at some point as it would
help to contribute to the mise-en-scene of the documentary.
