1. The Mobile World | 23/01/17 | Radio Times
The mobile industry is ever-growing and changing around us. With the technology market
being the most saturated it’s ever been and Ofcom releasing a statement now calling the UK
a “Smartphone Society” it is no surprise that young people today feel pressured to keep up
with the newest releases, overlooking the quality and putting social status first. The fresh
documentary “The Mobile World” is a fresh look into the patterns of the technology market-
what’s popular and why? Does it matter what the product does or is a mobile phone simply
just a fashion statement? Is the industry thriving or have we simply become a mobile world?
We spoke to Diana, documentary producer, to find out more about the issue that will be
addressed in ‘The Mobile world’, airing Friday 23rd February, 9pm, BBC 3.
So Diana, what inspired you to make this documentary? Why is the topic something we
need to address?
Young people are stereotyped to be reliant on technology and needing to keep up with the
newest releases, regardless of the cost or quality of the product and, as young people
ourselves, we see the proof of this every day. IPhones are the most by far the most popular
smartphones with almost every teenager owning one these days, but after getting fed up of
our phones tuning off when its cold we wanted to find out more- are these products really
as good as we are led to believe or are we simply buying them due to peer pressure and
social status?
2. You discuss peer pressure and this is also something that is touched upon in the
documentary, do you think this contributes to how young people are stereotyped and their
use of technology is stigmatised?
Yeah, of course. When you are brought up surrounded by new technology and you, in a
sense, grow up alongside the growing technology market it does become a large part of
your lifestyle and the society you grow up in. Unfortunately, young people will always look
for reasons to look down on others, ad we wanted to explore whether this is the underlying
for the demand for IPhone over Samsungs.
Personally, do you think IPhones are a superior product or are they just a fad?
Until creating this documentary I did believe that IPhone are better products however our
research and expert interviews have opened my eyes to facts that have since changed my
mind. In my opinion now Samsungs are the superior technology with better software but
would I ever swap my Iphone 7 for a Galaxy edge? That’s a different question haha.
Our documentary will open the eyes of young people, providing expert information they
may not be aware of. Changing the stigma surrounding non-apple products is a huge task
that will only be achievable by the young communities over time, but we do hope this will
show that you don’t have to follow the new trend or what everyone else has, becoming a
smartphone society is inevitable but, by buying products that are right for us as individuals,
we can embrace and thrive in this mobile world.
