Music Advertising
The music industry and music business have always favored profits whether it is to sell as much
merchandise as humanly possible, to change a group or artists look to look a certain desirable way,
or to churn out similar music styles that appeal to young teenagers in love. The music business is
one that has always favored making as much profit as possible and predicting and gambling which
songs would would hit the big time. Marketing is the department of business that has to produce
products and appeal to target audiences. Marketing was a huge tool in Elvis' career, Berry Gordy's
Motown singers, and selling crooner music that appealed to young women. Elvis career and music is
thanks to not only his great talents but, his marketing team at RCA. In the book Rockin' In Time it
states that girls woke up and fell asleep to images and merchandise that was marketed to young
girls, "All told, the fan could buy seventy–eight different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Berry Gordy wanted his singers to look, act, and perform a certain way that resembled grace and
respectable stature. This particular marketed can be seen as overprotective or overbearing, but Berry
Gordy had the goal to break through segregation borders and needed his singers to act and perform a
certain way to appeal to Caucasian audiences. He groomed his men and women with skills of
etiquette. In our class lecture, we watched a video of Motown singer and Martha Reeves from
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas spoke about how Mr. Gordy sent the girls to a class that taught the
ladies how to be "proper". Berry Gordy would also give each of the Supremes a diamond ring to
wear so that they could not date. According to Rockin' In Time, when asked if they were married or
engaged to the girls would respond "Yeah, to Motown." Mr. Gordy marketed these women as
respectable and proper women to achieve his overall goal of challenging segregation during the

The Music Video For Worth It By The Artist Fifth Harmony...
In the Western World, men are often viewed as more valuable and capable than their female
counterparts; the girl group Fifth Harmony is fighting back on that view. In early 2015, the all–
female group of five young adults released the final single from their debut album (Billboard). Fifth
Harmony had yet to have success in mainstream music and were vying for success on the charts.
The song they released was entitled Worth It and it is a traditionally catchy pop song, but the
complimenting music video is far from traditional. The music video for Worth It by the artist Fifth
Harmony illustrates women in stereotypical male jobs in a purposely shocking way to point out
institutionalized gender discrimination.
The video opens with scenes from a large urban city, before flashing to a NASDAQ–style stock
board featuring the phrase: "Women in power." The stock board appears constantly throughout the
remainder of the video behind the women, as the words and numbers change to include phrases such
as "glass ceiling" and "feminism." The women of Fifth Harmony are first shown in the music video
confidently strutting in business suits and high heels. It should be noted men are in the back of
several frames, keeping the females in the forefront of the video. As the video progresses, there are
scenes depicting men in stereotypical female jobs such as assistant and secretarial positions, and
men working for women in other positions such as drivers appear. One of the most prominent

The Controversy-Out Of Detroit
At a point in history where there was so much controversy over segregation and where minorities
were treated unfairly it was easy to see that there was no one solution to such a problem. One may
have anticipated that the road to equal rights would be a long and bumpy one. However, they may
not have anticipated that a start up record label out of Detroit would play an important role in the
movement towards Civil Rights. This record label would change the face of music in the 60s to
allow for young African–American artists to enter the scene with a fighting chance. In 1959, an
African American man named Berry Gordy took initiative and started his own record label in
Detroit. This record label was originally named "Tamla Records" but was later ... Show more

"They Produced some of the first 'crossover' hits, songs that caught on with both black and white
audiences. Soon Motown groups like The Supremes were getting classy booking to play for white
audiences in venues like Copacabana" (The Story). Gordy's insistence upon the upkeep of an artist's
style, manners, and diction was based on the style of White Americans. He knew that to sell music
his artists had to appeal to a white audience. Motown records went to great lengths to get favorable
press from white publications. The label was extremely active in promoting its artists and music
through media by establishing a tight knit relationship with Detroit, which loved Motown and fed
into its success greatly. The direct connection of Motown to a community allowed for fans to feel as
though they were part of the Motown team. "Thanks to it's popularity, African–American songs and
faces entered the homes of every American in the country, regardless of race," (The Sixties).
Motown achieved crossover success by adding the expectations and style of white Americans to
African–American artists and the black sound that America had been rejecting. The sound with the
new, cleaned up look of the artists at Motown Records appealed to black and white audiences
everywhere. The crossover of Motown opened many doors for African– Americans during this time
period by initiating the acceptance of black role models in American society. The African–American
base of Motown in addition to the style and sound that appealed to every race allowed for Motown
records to play a key role in the Civil Rights Movement not only through the creation of African–
American power figures but also through the records it produced to aid in the

The Importance Of Dance In My Life
Dance In My Life Dance, along with music, has always been a part of my life. As a child, my sister
and I would 'choreograph' our own dance routines pretending to be with the USO. We wanted to be
like The Supremes or Martha and the Vandellas, or even the Bee Gees or Osmonds. Together, we
would make up 'song and dance' routines then perform them for our family. Really, we were just
trying to please our daddy whom we adored. Regrettably, I was never able to participate in formal
dance training. Most other kids joined the dance classes at Tony Deel's Studio but I was unable to do
so for financial reasons. Alternatively, I became a cheerleader and that same year I was allowed to
also join drill team and pom squad. Initially, I was a lanky, awkward teen with little coordination,
but in time I gained skills and dance moves that put me at the front of the squad. Surprisingly, I
became so adept at the moves in the routines I was able to also choreograph many of our
performances. Dance became my 'happy place'. There, in front of all the crowds of people at the
football or basketball games, I was no longer the shy little girl who was embarrassed to speak for
fear of being made fun of. My self–image of being a scrawny, crooked toothed, flat–chested little
curly mop–head didn't matter when I was performing. I was so good at it, that I was able to show off
those skills with confidence. This form of dance saved me from a life of cowering in the corner or in
the shadows of my peers.

Song Analysis : Martha And The Vandellas
Song Analysis Essay
Martha and the Vandellas was a female vocal group and one of the first groups signed by Motown
Records. Big in the 1960's and 1970's, they were probably best known for their song "Dancing in the
Street" which has been covered by numerous artists since. Though one of their less popular songs, "I
Should Be Proud", stands out to this day as an anti–war song which voiced a disagreement with the
war– particularly regarding civil rights issues at the time. Though it was the first protest song by
Motown Records when it was released in 1970, the song was never very popular and only peaked
the R&B Billboards at number 45. In searching for more information on the song, there is little to
find aside from a mention on Wikipedia. There the song is described as "uncharacteristic of the
Vandellas," and as having done "nothing to promote the group". Despite this, the song is very
characteristic of the time it was made. The lyrics of the song tell a story which was extremely
similar to many women's during the war. They describe a woman who learns that a loved one
(presumably her husband) is missing in action in the Vietnam War after being shot down. Six weeks
later she receives a letter stating that her loved one is dead. What follows is a description of
receiving her loved one's body and medals for his participation in the war along with the comments
by many that she should be proud that he served in the war. The repetition of the lyrics "and they tell

The sound was nothing that Motown or anybody else had heard before a combinations of funk, jazz,

Marvin Gaye received many accolades for the album, the NAACP Image Award, the major gave him
a key to the city of Washington D.C. He received Trendsetter of the Year award from Billboard

in his personal life also. His divorce with Anna Gordy was a messy one, with both side claiming

African American Integration Research Paper
When someone says "music", one might think of a favorite song or band; not necessarily what kind
of impact music truly has. When someone says "segregation", the mind thinks of multiple things not
being able to be together. But people not being able to be together are not always a common one.
The merging of these two things starting a revolution that lasted decades. With the power of music
and famous people, integration was procured between the white and African American cultures.

Berry Gordy Jr.: The Birth Of Motown
Berry Gordy Jr. started Motown Records in January of 1959 with only an $800 loan from his family
and a passion for music. Within a few years of opening Motown Records, what started as a small
Detroit record studio, they were selling more singles and releasing more hits than any other
recording company. Motown became a cultural icon changing the way music was. Berry Gordy Jr.
was known as the most successful African–American owned and operated record company which
gave African–American artists a chance to record and sell their music. The embrace of Motown's
artists and recordings by the entire listening audience helped control racial barriers that had plagued
the country since its establishment. In its classic era, the eventful music scene of the 1960s,
Motown's artists were among the most popular, establishing a standard of excellence and
sophistication that has never been exceeded. Beginning with a roster of young artists drawn largely
from Detroit's poor and working class neighborhoods, the Miracles, the Marvelettes, Martha and the
Vandellas, Marvin Gaye and Mary Wells began providing Motown with consistent hits, which many
were written and produced by Robinson. Other acts that were signed with Motown Records included
the Temptations and the Supremes. After signing the Temptations ... Show more content on

Movement and the emergence of Black Power. Specifically, Sykes mentions Phase III (1968–1972)
of the Civil Rights Movement, in which Motown Records released songs that protested the "war"
calling for peace, "be it peace in Vietnam, peace on the streets, or world peace." (Page 10). An
example was Martha and the Vandellas recording of "I Should Be Proud" telling the story of a

Motown Impact On Society
"Motown was about music for all people – white and black, blue and green, cops and the robbers. I
was reluctant to have our music alienate anyone" (Berry Gordy Jr.). Motown Records was founded
in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan, by a young entrepreneur Berry Gordy Jr., in pursuit for better music
and society. With the signing of many culture–changing artists, such as Stevie Wonder and Gladys
Knight, Motown's influence in music and society has forever changed the lives of many. After their
move to Los Angeles in June of 1972, many artists signed to the record label either left, or moved
with the label to Los Angeles. This move to Los Angeles effected their sound, exploring other
genres. Even though their move to Los Angeles hurt their image, their effect on society was still felt
throughout the people. From the 1960s – 1970s, Motown Records established themselves as a major
contributor to African American culture by actively partaking in fighting against injustice, serving as
a social and industrial conciliator for unfaltering racial injustice existing throughout America, and
changing modern–day society forever.
Motown's role in society as a social conciliator provided hope for racially segregated groups, such
as African Americans, and unrepresented sexual groups, like women. Motown Records, led by the
president, Berry Gordy Jr., was very involved in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's, from
producing music about African American rights to producing the speeches of Martin

1960–1970
During the 1960s the United States was going through a lot of social changes. One of the major
trends was the widespread use of illicit drugs. The most common drugs used were hallucinogens,
marijuana and LSD. Two men, Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey, were known as "the so–called acid
gurus" of the sixties. They helped gain the recognition of LSD seemingly overnight. Leary and
Kesey made very public exploitations and wrote many books to explain and vilify this phenomenon.

The term ``Pop Art'' was first used by the English critic Lawrence Alloway in a 1958 issue of

Pop artists, the cult figure Andy Warhol, recreated quasi–photographic paintings of people or
everyday objects.
In 1960, Elvis returned to the music scene from the US Army, joining the other white male vocalists
at the top of the charts; Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka, Jerry Lee Lewis, Paul Anka, Del Shannon and
Frankie Avalon. America, however, was ready for a change. The Tamla Motown Record Company

such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, Martha and the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Aretha Franklin,
as well as some black men, including Smoky Robinson, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and the
Temptations. Bob Dylan helped bring about a folk music revival, along with Joan Baez and Peter,

1984 Songs Analysis
The Dark 1984 Soundtrack Music always has hiding meanings. Every song we listen to we can
almost always compare it to an event or person. While reading 1984 two songs came to mind that
had definitive ties to the characters Winston and Big Brother. Another song had similarities to the
telescreen. The connection of these three songs of the characters and object enhance the meaning of
the story. Winston is one of those rebellious characters. He doesn't care completely of the
consequences, he just does what he wants, even if the Party doesn't agree with him. This is why the
song "Devil in her Heart," by Richard Drapkin describes him perfectly. In the song there is a part
were the lyrics say "I'll take my chances." He will do whatever he wants ... Show more content on

Well in Oceania they are always being watched by telescreens. This is why the song "Nowhere to
Run," by Martha and the Vandellas fits perfectly with telescreens. The Lyrics that show that the
people in Oceania are always being watched is when it says, "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide." No
matter where you are at there is never away to get away from the Party due to the telescreens. An
example in the book that represents these lyrics well is when Julia and Winston are upstairs at Mr.
Charrington's house and they are near each other and they say we are dead and then an iron voice
repeated them. They sprung apart and then realized that the whole time there was a telescreen
behind the big picture on the wall (221). They thought they had finally found a place where they
weren't being watched by the telescreen but they were being watched the entire time. This just
proves that they never had anywhere to run or hide because wherever they went they were being
watched. Another example that shows these lyrics depicting the telescreen is in the beginning of the
book when it was described that any sound Winston made could be picked up and that it was
conceivable that they watched everyone all the time. They had to live and did live in the assumption
that every sound they made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized
(3). These two examples in the book 1984 really show the lyrics "Nowhere to run,

The World Of The Vietnam War
The year is 1965: the skate board is the latest craze in kids toys; the miniskirt makes its appearance;
hypertext is introduced for linking on the Internet; Kellogg 's Pop Tarts pastries are created; Sonny
& Cher make their first TV appearance in "American Bandstand"; rights activist Malcolm X is shot
dead; the Gemini 3 launched the first US 2–man space flight; and the first United States combat
forces arrive in Vietnam. This was not the start of the Vietnam War since the war actually started in
1955, pitting Communist North Vietnam against anti–Communist South Vietnam. The United States
believed it had to protect South Vietnam from Communist take–over and is the reason the U.S.
supplied South Vietnam with millions of dollars in military aid as well as with military advisors
from the start of the war. Eventually, the US had no other choice but to send troops to war and it
became the first war Americans opposed publicly and passionately, making the US involvement in
the Vietnam War a shameful venture rather than a noble cause. Although the Vietnam War was the
first televised war, it is unclear if Vietnam War films are able to give an honest portrayal of the
Vietnam War experience, or if truer reality of the war can be found only in textbooks. The Vietnam
War was so much a part of American life that it could not be ignored, and with war films losing their
appeal after World War II, it's hard to know if the Vietnam War would be actually portrayed on the
big screen. The

African American Music Culture
African American Music Culture Jakiella James "African–American gospel music is a major
influence in nearly all genres of modern popular music, from rhythm 'n blues to jazz, from soul to
rock 'n roll. The musical genre is a unique expression of the black experience in America? The
emotionally–charged, wailing vocals and syncopated rhythms give the music a distinctive style. The
singing is accompanied not only by instrumentals, but often also by hand–clapping, foot–stomping
and shouting. Gospel music is rooted in slave spirituals and protestant hymns. During the late 1800s,
the music spread in popularity among white Christians through the traveling revivals led by
Evangelist Dwight Moody. The music took root in the black ... Show more content on

As in traditional African cultures and as the ancestors that endured slavery had done, African
Americans used music to communicate, synchronize, summon courage and assuage pain and
adversity. That uniquely African style of singing with emotion, power and rhythm was evident
through the field hollerers, work songs, spirituals, gospels and blues. Then the rhythm and blues
artists and the soul artists provided a rich resource for the succeeding style of music called "funk".
And these artists drove it home to an ever widening audience. This was also the time when other
artists were delivering songs with philosophical and social messages. The emphasis of this paper
will be on the music called funk and its impact on the American culture. Students will be engaged in
actively listening to and discussing a variety of artists to evaluate their effect on the music's
direction, impact and audience. At the turn of the nineteenth century, jazz was making its entrance
and establishing itself as the music of the future with icons such as Buck Clayton, Sidney Bichet,
Louis Armstrong, Lil Hardin, King Joe Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton. They were followed by Scott
Joplin, Fletcher Henderson, Noble Sissle, Louis Jordan, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others.

During this time, free sex was promoted and monogamy was rare. In addition, the 1960s was the

Social Movementism And The History Of The Black Power...
Social movements are actions of history that have shaped the way societies run and the values their
citizens uphold. The Black Power Movement is one example of a major social movement is the
history of the United States. While it stemmed from and contains a purpose similar to that of the
Civil Rights Movement, a shift in attitude and leadership gave the Black Power Movement (BPM)
its own unique identity. Musicking and the use of music changed with the times to reflect this new
movement and is arguably one of the central reasons the BPM is examined as its own tour de force
in the push for equal rights. A social movement is defined as the gathering of people to change an
element of society that they feel is not acceptable and cannot endure any longer. There are two
primary types of movements: reactive and proactive. Reactive movements typically involved
resistance movements and are a pushback or reaction to current social changes. Proactive social
movements include reform and revolutionary social movements which are designed to bring radical
social change and replace the existing structures with new ones. While these definitions remain
constant, as social changes impact societies, many social movements may change labels. A proactive
movement can become a reactive movement and vice–versa. The Black Power Movement is a social
movement because it was seeking to change the societal belief that while blacks and whites were
legally equal, blacks were still treated as inferior in

Music Advertising

  • 1. Music Advertising The music industry and music business have always favored profits whether it is to sell as much merchandise as humanly possible, to change a group or artists look to look a certain desirable way, or to churn out similar music styles that appeal to young teenagers in love. The music business is one that has always favored making as much profit as possible and predicting and gambling which songs would would hit the big time. Marketing is the department of business that has to produce products and appeal to target audiences. Marketing was a huge tool in Elvis' career, Berry Gordy's Motown singers, and selling crooner music that appealed to young women. Elvis career and music is thanks to not only his great talents but, his marketing team at RCA. In the book Rockin' In Time it states that girls woke up and fell asleep to images and merchandise that was marketed to young girls, "All told, the fan could buy seventy–eight different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Berry Gordy wanted his singers to look, act, and perform a certain way that resembled grace and respectable stature. This particular marketed can be seen as overprotective or overbearing, but Berry Gordy had the goal to break through segregation borders and needed his singers to act and perform a certain way to appeal to Caucasian audiences. He groomed his men and women with skills of etiquette. In our class lecture, we watched a video of Motown singer and Martha Reeves from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas spoke about how Mr. Gordy sent the girls to a class that taught the ladies how to be "proper". Berry Gordy would also give each of the Supremes a diamond ring to wear so that they could not date. According to Rockin' In Time, when asked if they were married or engaged to the girls would respond "Yeah, to Motown." Mr. Gordy marketed these women as respectable and proper women to achieve his overall goal of challenging segregation during the Civil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Music Video For Worth It By The Artist Fifth Harmony... In the Western World, men are often viewed as more valuable and capable than their female counterparts; the girl group Fifth Harmony is fighting back on that view. In early 2015, the all– female group of five young adults released the final single from their debut album (Billboard). Fifth Harmony had yet to have success in mainstream music and were vying for success on the charts. The song they released was entitled Worth It and it is a traditionally catchy pop song, but the complimenting music video is far from traditional. The music video for Worth It by the artist Fifth Harmony illustrates women in stereotypical male jobs in a purposely shocking way to point out institutionalized gender discrimination. The video opens with scenes from a large urban city, before flashing to a NASDAQ–style stock board featuring the phrase: "Women in power." The stock board appears constantly throughout the remainder of the video behind the women, as the words and numbers change to include phrases such as "glass ceiling" and "feminism." The women of Fifth Harmony are first shown in the music video confidently strutting in business suits and high heels. It should be noted men are in the back of several frames, keeping the females in the forefront of the video. As the video progresses, there are scenes depicting men in stereotypical female jobs such as assistant and secretarial positions, and men working for women in other positions such as drivers appear. One of the most prominent visuals of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Controversy-Out Of Detroit At a point in history where there was so much controversy over segregation and where minorities were treated unfairly it was easy to see that there was no one solution to such a problem. One may have anticipated that the road to equal rights would be a long and bumpy one. However, they may not have anticipated that a start up record label out of Detroit would play an important role in the movement towards Civil Rights. This record label would change the face of music in the 60s to allow for young African–American artists to enter the scene with a fighting chance. In 1959, an African American man named Berry Gordy took initiative and started his own record label in Detroit. This record label was originally named "Tamla Records" but was later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "They Produced some of the first 'crossover' hits, songs that caught on with both black and white audiences. Soon Motown groups like The Supremes were getting classy booking to play for white audiences in venues like Copacabana" (The Story). Gordy's insistence upon the upkeep of an artist's style, manners, and diction was based on the style of White Americans. He knew that to sell music his artists had to appeal to a white audience. Motown records went to great lengths to get favorable press from white publications. The label was extremely active in promoting its artists and music through media by establishing a tight knit relationship with Detroit, which loved Motown and fed into its success greatly. The direct connection of Motown to a community allowed for fans to feel as though they were part of the Motown team. "Thanks to it's popularity, African–American songs and faces entered the homes of every American in the country, regardless of race," (The Sixties). Motown achieved crossover success by adding the expectations and style of white Americans to African–American artists and the black sound that America had been rejecting. The sound with the new, cleaned up look of the artists at Motown Records appealed to black and white audiences everywhere. The crossover of Motown opened many doors for African– Americans during this time period by initiating the acceptance of black role models in American society. The African–American base of Motown in addition to the style and sound that appealed to every race allowed for Motown records to play a key role in the Civil Rights Movement not only through the creation of African– American power figures but also through the records it produced to aid in the ... • 13. The Importance Of Dance In My Life Dance In My Life Dance, along with music, has always been a part of my life. As a child, my sister and I would 'choreograph' our own dance routines pretending to be with the USO. We wanted to be like The Supremes or Martha and the Vandellas, or even the Bee Gees or Osmonds. Together, we would make up 'song and dance' routines then perform them for our family. Really, we were just trying to please our daddy whom we adored. Regrettably, I was never able to participate in formal dance training. Most other kids joined the dance classes at Tony Deel's Studio but I was unable to do so for financial reasons. Alternatively, I became a cheerleader and that same year I was allowed to also join drill team and pom squad. Initially, I was a lanky, awkward teen with little coordination, but in time I gained skills and dance moves that put me at the front of the squad. Surprisingly, I became so adept at the moves in the routines I was able to also choreograph many of our performances. Dance became my 'happy place'. There, in front of all the crowds of people at the football or basketball games, I was no longer the shy little girl who was embarrassed to speak for fear of being made fun of. My self–image of being a scrawny, crooked toothed, flat–chested little curly mop–head didn't matter when I was performing. I was so good at it, that I was able to show off those skills with confidence. This form of dance saved me from a life of cowering in the corner or in the shadows of my peers. ... • 17. Song Analysis : Martha And The Vandellas Song Analysis Essay Martha and the Vandellas was a female vocal group and one of the first groups signed by Motown Records. Big in the 1960's and 1970's, they were probably best known for their song "Dancing in the Street" which has been covered by numerous artists since. Though one of their less popular songs, "I Should Be Proud", stands out to this day as an anti–war song which voiced a disagreement with the war– particularly regarding civil rights issues at the time. Though it was the first protest song by Motown Records when it was released in 1970, the song was never very popular and only peaked the R&B Billboards at number 45. In searching for more information on the song, there is little to find aside from a mention on Wikipedia. There the song is described as "uncharacteristic of the Vandellas," and as having done "nothing to promote the group". Despite this, the song is very characteristic of the time it was made. The lyrics of the song tell a story which was extremely similar to many women's during the war. They describe a woman who learns that a loved one (presumably her husband) is missing in action in the Vietnam War after being shot down. Six weeks later she receives a letter stating that her loved one is dead. What follows is a description of receiving her loved one's body and medals for his participation in the war along with the comments by many that she should be proud that he served in the war. The repetition of the lyrics "and they tell me that I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The sound was nothing that Motown or anybody else had heard before a combinations of funk, jazz, and Latin rhythms. These sounds are heard in some of the music we hear today in soul music. Marvin Gaye received many accolades for the album, the NAACP Image Award, the major gave him a key to the city of Washington D.C. He received Trendsetter of the Year award from Billboard Magazine's and the Male Vocalist of the Year award from Cashbox Magazine. Rolling Stone Magazine rated it in the top ten album of all–time. With all his success, Gaye also had some failures in his personal life also. His divorce with Anna Gordy was a messy one, with both side claiming physical abuse. When someone says "segregation", the mind thinks of multiple things not being able to be together. But people not being able to be together are not always a common one. The merging of these two things starting a revolution that lasted decades. With the power of music and famous people, integration was procured between the white and African American cultures. • 33. Berry Gordy Jr.: The Birth Of Motown Berry Gordy Jr. started Motown Records in January of 1959 with only an $800 loan from his family and a passion for music. Within a few years of opening Motown Records, what started as a small Detroit record studio, they were selling more singles and releasing more hits than any other recording company. Motown became a cultural icon changing the way music was. Berry Gordy Jr. was known as the most successful African–American owned and operated record company which gave African–American artists a chance to record and sell their music. The embrace of Motown's artists and recordings by the entire listening audience helped control racial barriers that had plagued the country since its establishment. In its classic era, the eventful music scene of the 1960s, Motown's artists were among the most popular, establishing a standard of excellence and sophistication that has never been exceeded. Beginning with a roster of young artists drawn largely from Detroit's poor and working class neighborhoods, the Miracles, the Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye and Mary Wells began providing Motown with consistent hits, which many were written and produced by Robinson. • 41. Motown Impact On Society "Motown was about music for all people – white and black, blue and green, cops and the robbers. I was reluctant to have our music alienate anyone" (Berry Gordy Jr.). Motown Records was founded in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan, by a young entrepreneur Berry Gordy Jr., in pursuit for better music and society. With the signing of many culture–changing artists, such as Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight, Motown's influence in music and society has forever changed the lives of many. After their move to Los Angeles in June of 1972, many artists signed to the record label either left, or moved with the label to Los Angeles. This move to Los Angeles effected their sound, exploring other genres. Even though their move to Los Angeles hurt their image, their effect on society was still felt throughout the people. From the 1960s – 1970s, Motown Records established themselves as a major contributor to African American culture by actively partaking in fighting against injustice, serving as a social and industrial conciliator for unfaltering racial injustice existing throughout America, and changing modern–day society forever. Motown's role in society as a social conciliator provided hope for racially segregated groups, such as African Americans, and unrepresented sexual groups, like women. Motown Records, led by the president, Berry Gordy Jr., was very involved in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's, from producing music about African American rights to producing the speeches of Martin ... • 45. 1960-1970 1960–1970 During the 1960s the United States was going through a lot of social changes. One of the major trends was the widespread use of illicit drugs. The most common drugs used were hallucinogens, marijuana and LSD. Two men, Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey, were known as "the so–called acid gurus" of the sixties. They helped gain the recognition of LSD seemingly overnight. Leary and Kesey made very public exploitations and wrote many books to explain and vilify this phenomenon. It all happened so suddenly and soon after young men were wearing long hair and growing beards and the women dressed like peasants and wearing psychedelic colors. All of them dirty, drugged and carefree. They were known as hippies. Being a hippie was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The term ``Pop Art'' was first used by the English critic Lawrence Alloway in a 1958 issue of Architectural Digest to describe those paintings that celebrate post–war consumerism, defy the psychology of Abstract Expressionism, and worship the god of materialism. The most famous of the Pop artists, the cult figure Andy Warhol, recreated quasi–photographic paintings of people or everyday objects. In 1960, Elvis returned to the music scene from the US Army, joining the other white male vocalists at the top of the charts; Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka, Jerry Lee Lewis, Paul Anka, Del Shannon and Frankie Avalon. America, however, was ready for a change. The Tamla Motown Record Company came on the scene, specializing in black rhythm and blues, aided in the emergence of female groups such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, Martha and the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Aretha Franklin, as well as some black men, including Smoky Robinson, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and the Temptations. Bob Dylan helped bring about a folk music revival, along with Joan Baez and Peter, Paul & Mary. The Beach Boys began recording music that appealed to high–schoolers. The Beatles, from England, burst into popularity with innovative rock music that appealed to all ages. There was a major change in popular music in the mid–1960's, caused in part by the ... • 49. 1984 Songs Analysis The Dark 1984 Soundtrack Music always has hiding meanings. Every song we listen to we can almost always compare it to an event or person. While reading 1984 two songs came to mind that had definitive ties to the characters Winston and Big Brother. Another song had similarities to the telescreen. The connection of these three songs of the characters and object enhance the meaning of the story. Winston is one of those rebellious characters. He doesn't care completely of the consequences, he just does what he wants, even if the Party doesn't agree with him. This is why the song "Devil in her Heart," by Richard Drapkin describes him perfectly. In the song there is a part were the lyrics say "I'll take my chances." He will do whatever he wants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well in Oceania they are always being watched by telescreens. This is why the song "Nowhere to Run," by Martha and the Vandellas fits perfectly with telescreens. The Lyrics that show that the people in Oceania are always being watched is when it says, "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide." No matter where you are at there is never away to get away from the Party due to the telescreens. An example in the book that represents these lyrics well is when Julia and Winston are upstairs at Mr. Charrington's house and they are near each other and they say we are dead and then an iron voice repeated them. They sprung apart and then realized that the whole time there was a telescreen behind the big picture on the wall (221). They thought they had finally found a place where they weren't being watched by the telescreen but they were being watched the entire time. This just proves that they never had anywhere to run or hide because wherever they went they were being watched. Another example that shows these lyrics depicting the telescreen is in the beginning of the book when it was described that any sound Winston made could be picked up and that it was conceivable that they watched everyone all the time. They had to live and did live in the assumption that every sound they made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized (3). These two examples in the book 1984 really show the lyrics "Nowhere to run, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. The World Of The Vietnam War The year is 1965: the skate board is the latest craze in kids toys; the miniskirt makes its appearance; hypertext is introduced for linking on the Internet; Kellogg 's Pop Tarts pastries are created; Sonny & Cher make their first TV appearance in "American Bandstand"; rights activist Malcolm X is shot dead; the Gemini 3 launched the first US 2–man space flight; and the first United States combat forces arrive in Vietnam. This was not the start of the Vietnam War since the war actually started in 1955, pitting Communist North Vietnam against anti–Communist South Vietnam. The United States believed it had to protect South Vietnam from Communist take–over and is the reason the U.S. supplied South Vietnam with millions of dollars in military aid as well as with military advisors from the start of the war. Eventually, the US had no other choice but to send troops to war and it became the first war Americans opposed publicly and passionately, making the US involvement in the Vietnam War a shameful venture rather than a noble cause. Although the Vietnam War was the first televised war, it is unclear if Vietnam War films are able to give an honest portrayal of the Vietnam War experience, or if truer reality of the war can be found only in textbooks. The Vietnam War was so much a part of American life that it could not be ignored, and with war films losing their appeal after World War II, it's hard to know if the Vietnam War would be actually portrayed on the big screen. • 57. African American Music Culture African American Music Culture Jakiella James "African–American gospel music is a major influence in nearly all genres of modern popular music, from rhythm 'n blues to jazz, from soul to rock 'n roll. The musical genre is a unique expression of the black experience in America? The emotionally–charged, wailing vocals and syncopated rhythms give the music a distinctive style. The singing is accompanied not only by instrumentals, but often also by hand–clapping, foot–stomping and shouting. Gospel music is rooted in slave spirituals and protestant hymns. During the late 1800s, the music spread in popularity among white Christians through the traveling revivals led by Evangelist Dwight Moody. The music took root in the black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As in traditional African cultures and as the ancestors that endured slavery had done, African Americans used music to communicate, synchronize, summon courage and assuage pain and adversity. That uniquely African style of singing with emotion, power and rhythm was evident through the field hollerers, work songs, spirituals, gospels and blues. Then the rhythm and blues artists and the soul artists provided a rich resource for the succeeding style of music called "funk". And these artists drove it home to an ever widening audience. This was also the time when other artists were delivering songs with philosophical and social messages. The emphasis of this paper will be on the music called funk and its impact on the American culture. Students will be engaged in actively listening to and discussing a variety of artists to evaluate their effect on the music's direction, impact and audience. At the turn of the nineteenth century, jazz was making its entrance and establishing itself as the music of the future with icons such as Buck Clayton, Sidney Bichet, Louis Armstrong, Lil Hardin, King Joe Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton. They were followed by Scott Joplin, Fletcher Henderson, Noble Sissle, Louis Jordan, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others. • 65. Social Movementism And The History Of The Black Power... Social movements are actions of history that have shaped the way societies run and the values their citizens uphold. The Black Power Movement is one example of a major social movement is the history of the United States. While it stemmed from and contains a purpose similar to that of the Civil Rights Movement, a shift in attitude and leadership gave the Black Power Movement (BPM) its own unique identity. Musicking and the use of music changed with the times to reflect this new movement and is arguably one of the central reasons the BPM is examined as its own tour de force in the push for equal rights. A social movement is defined as the gathering of people to change an element of society that they feel is not acceptable and cannot endure any longer. There are two primary types of movements: reactive and proactive. Reactive movements typically involved resistance movements and are a pushback or reaction to current social changes. Proactive social movements include reform and revolutionary social movements which are designed to bring radical social change and replace the existing structures with new ones. While these definitions remain constant, as social changes impact societies, many social movements may change labels. A proactive movement can become a reactive movement and vice–versa. The Black Power Movement is a social movement because it was seeking to change the societal belief that while blacks and whites were legally equal, blacks were still treated as inferior in ...
