Bob Marley is a name most people know but his accomplishments and dedication to music is often overlooked. Bob was more than just a reggae
artist, he was an inspiration to the country of Jamaica. He was a role model to the poverty stricken island and gave hope to many people. Bob was
born on February 6, 1945 in his grandfather's house. He was the son of a poor farm girl and a British naval Captain. Soon after his birth Bob's
father, Norval Marley, left his mother. He remained responsible and provided financial support and occasionally came back to see them. In the 50's a

live a life without freedom. They continued to fight after their arrival. The song Buffalo soldier helps many learn the way history truly happened.
Jamaicans are still affected by past injustices (Dorsey 5). The majority of this population are the descendants of African slaves, forced to leave their
villages some two hundred years ago to labor on Jamaican plantations for white masters.
Could You Be Loved is another song written by Bob Marley after he witnessed the terrible Jamaican school system, people living in poverty which
caused the oppression of both the Jamaican and African people. Bob Marley wanted the world to know about the educational injustice taking
place in The Jamaican School System. This is one of the many messages Bob Marley tried to spread across in this song. He sang of how many
children could not afford to go to school because of certain rules preventing them. In the line," Don't let them fool you or even try to school you"
Marley is writing about how the Jamaican school systems have a policy that says shoes must be worn in school. Many families in Jamaica cannot

Nesta Marley, more commonly known as Bob Marley. Marley connected with his audience on a variety of levels. While he worked to unite the people

and in other countries until Bob Marley. Bob Marley's records elevated the music industry producing an island sound that consisted of syncopated

Bob Marley was born on 6th February 1945, in the hills of Jamaica by the Parish of St. Annes. His mother came from a very respectable black
family called the Malcolms. They were farmers and known well to be hardworking and clean people. When she told her father that she was pregnant,
he was furious and he felt even worse when she told him that the father of her child was Captain Norval Marley of the English East Indian Regiment.
The Marleys were white Jamaicans who were well known to hate blacks, but the worst thing was that she was 18 when he was nearly 50.

being drawn to the teachings of the Rastafari. The rhythm of all reggae is a Rasta rhythm. It was also supposed to be a cry to their god "Jah". The

While reading Catch a Fire I discovered many things about Bob Marley and his spiritual influence on the world. Not only just making records, Marley
spoke to his people through his songs and took advantage of the opportunities given to him as a musician.

He found Aston an accomplished bass player, Carlton to play the drums and he brought in a trio of female back up vocalists called the I–Threes, one
of whom would eventually become his wife Rita.
In Jamaica at the time Bob was viewed as a mystic and prophet, and was becoming the symbol for a nation. Seeking re–election the Prime Minister
asked Bob Marley to stage a free concert on the same day as the National election, trying to lock up the support of the Marley followers and in turn the
election. This move however resulted in an attempt to end Marley's life.
On the evening of December 3, a number of gunmen arrived at Bob's house on 56 Hope Road and shot Bob, his wife Rita, and his manager. The
gunmen were thought to be the henchmen of the opposition leader Edward Seaga. Luckily nobody was killed and Bob went ahead with the planned
concert rebelliously appearing with his arm in a sling. The following year during a massive European concert Bob Marley was diagnosed with
melanoma cancer in his big toe, the result of a neglected football injury.
Later in Jamaica, Bob once again received a request from the political leaders to perform a peace concert in his native land. Not phased by earlier

growing field of health care known as music therapy, which uses music to heal." F. If you guys didn't know, Bob Marley died from cancer in 1981.
When he was first diagnosed with cancer while he was still on tour and one thing that stunned the doctors and his family was how bad the cancer had
spread and how he was still not only walking but also performing. According to many theorists it was the music that kept him going!
If this music helped Bob Marley to survive for so long with cancer then I am positive this music can sooth your heart and soul.

Blackwell went for it instantly for he had heard of The Wailers and gave them eight thousand pounds so they could get back home and record their
album for Island Records.
This was the first time a reggae band had ever had access to premium recording facility. They worked hard knowing this was their big chance and
released the album "Catch Fire", which did extremely well and was one of the first reggae albums as of before it was sold on singles or compilation
albums.
In the spring of 1973 the Wailers returned to London to start their first three month tour of Britain. When they returned to Jamaica, Bunny decided to
quit touring and was replaced by Joe Higgs. The Wailers then traveled to the US where they were to open 17 shows for a black act. They were fired
after 4 because the people came to see the Wailers and not the act. The crowds would often chant "Wailers" throughout. They once again found
themselves without any money and method home, but this time in Las Vegas. They eventually stumbled into San Francisco and while there they did a
live concert broadcast for a very popular radio station. This further boosted their popularity in North America.
To close 1973 the Wailers released their 2nd album "Burnin". This album contained many of the Wailers classics such as "I Shot the Sheriff" and "Get

In a time of political, economic, and social unrest, a new way of protest was beginning to emerge from Jamaica in the form of reggae music. It was
1963 when a young man from Jamaica by the name of Robert Nesta Marley, better known as "Bob Marley", formed a band called The Wailers, who
would undoubtedly become one of the only reggae bands to rise up from the oppression of the third world country. The country of Jamaica had just
gained independence from the U.K. in 1962, but was anything but a free nation. Those in power chose to exploit the country's few main exports,

So the Jamaican sound systems, mobile devices such as vans or musical equipment on wheels, would be used to host dances, and the deejays
would also use their sound systems to inform his listeners on political happenings. King states that, "As one of the few affordable social activities
for the poor, the sound system brought music to places where the voice of the poor could be heard without interference by local authorities" (16).
Like most of the world during this time, the black population was not allowed any political power, and many began to seek ways to resist. One of
the methods used as a means to passively fight back against the imbalance was the Rastafarian religion. The Rastafarian religion was born early in
the twentieth century, but its roots date back as far as the late 1800's when slaves felt compelled to revolt against the plantation owners on the belief
that God was calling them to fight for freedom. In 1927, a man named Marcus Garvey brought forth to Jamaicans the basis of the Rastafarian
religion, which was to look to Africa for the crowning of a king. This would be a sign for Jamaica that freedom is near. From Africana, the
Encyclopedia of the African and the African–American Experience, author Roanne Edwards quotes Garvey: "Look to Africa for the crowning of a
king to know that your redemption is nigh" (Edwards 1592). In 1930 Ras Tafari was crowned emperor of Ethiopia and baptized with the name Haile
Selassie.
