History of Muromachi Period 
 The Muromachi period is a division of Japanese history. 
 It started in 1337 and ended in 1573. 
 It marks the reign of the government of the Muromachi or 
Ashikaga shogunate. 
 The First Shogun was Ashikaga Takauji of the Muromachi. 
 The period ended when the last Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, 
was driven out of Kyoto in 1573.

Periods of Muromachi 
 Earlier years of the Muromachi were 1337 to 1392. This stage 
is known as the Nanbaku-cho or Northern and Southern 
Court Period. 
 The other known period is the Sengoka period or Warving 
States period is from 1465 to the end of the Muromachi 
period.

Western Influence 
 Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive at the end of 
the Muromachi period. 
 Other Europeans, such as the Spanish and Dutch, arrived in 
the early 17th century. 
 The Muromachi people studied European civilization. 
 This opened their economy to Europe. 
 Many things were traded with the Europeans such as 
firearms, glassware, clocks, tobacco and other European 
products. 
 The Japanese traded rare items, such as Gold and Silver.
