This document introduces multiplication as both repeated addition and an array. It uses counters arranged in rows and columns to demonstrate that the number of rows multiplied by the number of columns equals the total number of counters. Several examples show writing multiplication sentences to represent the rows and columns as well as equivalent addition sentences by adding the number of counters in each column. The document concludes by using word problems to further illustrate multiplication as repeated addition to calculate how many items are bought for a given number of friends.
