Superfecundation and superfetation describe two different mechanisms by which twins can be conceived. Superfecundation occurs when two different eggs are fertilized from separate acts of intercourse close together. Superfetation is the fertilization of eggs released in different menstrual cycles. In some cases of twin pregnancies, if one fetus dies early on, it can become compressed and flattened between membranes in a state called a foetus papyraceus or compressus. Sometimes known as "vanishing twins", serial ultrasounds may reveal the early death of one twin with the pregnancy continuing successfully with the surviving twin.
