This document discusses the MSSR Mode S secondary surveillance radar. Mode S provides selective interrogation with better accuracy by interrogating one target at a time. It uses a 15 RPM antenna rotation speed and includes features like reduced garbling, detection of over 16 million unique ICAO addresses, a unique 24-bit address for each aircraft, a lock-out system to limit interrogations and replies for each target, and altitude reporting in 25 foot increments. Mode S can also enable ground-to-air, air-to-air, and ground-to-ground communications.
