Bo Woods defended his MSc thesis which proposed an orientation-dependent adaptive antenna for low Earth orbit satellite communications. The antenna design uses a back-to-back patch antenna configuration to provide circular polarization while meeting SAR restrictions. An impedance monitoring system was also proposed to automatically detect the presence of a user's head near the antenna and turn off one patch element to reduce SAR levels when transmitting. Future work includes miniaturizing the design for integration into a mobile phone and further optimizing the impedance monitoring and beam shaping capabilities.
